Chapter 1086: 1086 The Ruins
A few of the other Witches came over to see what the commotion was about.
“Are we going on a field trip? I heard something about a place in the mountains,” Mio asked.
“Sort of. We can put it off for a bit, so that you all can enjoy the Library if you like, but once the two Succubi have finished their advancements, we should go investigate the site of the last battle of the great war and see if anything survived.” Wolfe explained.
“A tour of the last battleground of the war? How do you even know where it is?” Someone asked from a chair that was facing away from Wolfe.
“It was relayed to me by King Draven of the Dark Elves. He has the gift of the Oracle, and he gave me a replay of the events leading up to my own birth, as they related to my direct lineage.” Wolfe explained.
That was also how he learned how his father was, but that would be a very long conversation.
Mary gasped. “Oh, we need to see that. Even if there is just a little bit of rubble left there, I want to see it. It’s like the most important historic site in the world, and I didn’t know that anyone alive even knew where it was.
It wasn’t like there were any survivors to write down where they had gone exactly, so all that anyone knew was that the spell originated in the mountains of our continent.”
Vladimir nodded. “I have a map, but it will be outdated after the changes to the world. However, Mister Wolfe has referenced it along with the memories from the Eternal King to guide him.”
The Witches began waking the others from their research and explaining the situation. Everyone wanted to see the historic site, even if Wolfe wasn’t advancing.
“Alright, let’s get this show on the road. What are we waiting for? Oh, we should get ice cream for the trip.” Nimue demanded.
Vladimir shook his head in dismay. It didn’t take a genius to realize that he was not looking forward to making the record for this in his Library. It was part of his job to update new events, and now that he had met a new Patriarch, he would start a record of the events as they happened.
Events that he desperately hoped wouldn’t embarrass future generations of the Family.
“I will leave a small portal open to my quarters in Forest Grove from the reception area. That way, visitors can easily knock if they want to come over, and you can keep a remote viewing spell active as if it were within the grounds.
That should allow you to make records and get updated about the current state of the surface. I know that you’re actually eager to see how things have changed, now that you’re not worried about angry pregnant wives biting your head off.” Wolfe informed the vampire.
Cassie and Ella turned to glare at Wolfe, and Vladimir laughed. “If they can put up with you, I am in very little danger, Patriarch.”
The Pentacle members all laughed at Wolfe’s misfortune, so he opened a portal deep in the mountains, then scouted through that to find a flat spot they could begin the search from.
It should be very close to the final battle, but Wolfe had a suspicion that the final battle was a few kilometres away, on a mountain which had the top flattened off. It didn’t look natural as he mentally scouted, and it felt magical.
“Ladies, this way, please. I have the portal shielded, as it is daytime there, and Lord Vladimir is somewhat sensitive to bright lights.” Wolfe explained.
The ladies either waved or gave the vampire a hug as they left, and Wolfe tried not to laugh at the look on the Vampire’s face as he realized that he smelled like a dozen different perfumes.
“Please excuse the chaos, I will try to get them to come visit in smaller groups next time. I will be sure to send you a detailed report for the records, though.” Wolfe informed him.
“Take this with you, it will record your actions for the records. Most ranking Magi carried them back in my days, and they make things much easier.” Vlad explained.
“Good point. We should get footage of what we find and what comes next.”
Wolfe left and closed the portal before he released the spell, shading it to keep the sunlight out.
“Ladies, please step on the platform, and we will go for a flight. I think that I know where it is, I can feel the magic from here, but I can’t guarantee that it’s the right spot until we see it. It might actually be a surviving relic near the site of the battle, as unlikely as that is.”
Wolfe created the platform under their feet, and began to lift the whole group into the sky, headed for the flattened mountaintop that should be the remains of the shielded area where the final spells of the war were cast.
The site was a pillar of stone, cut nearly vertical, and Wolfe wondered what sort of blast would do that. A nuke would flatten the surface, but an air burst explosion didn’t really create huge craters of the sort that would level mountains around a shielded target.
That was what it looked like. As if a massive blast had hit the spire of stone and tore away everything else, levelling mountains and leaving one tall stone as an island in the middle of a mountain lake.
There was no doubt now that they were here. Both Magi and Witch Magic permeated this area with the heavy stench of curses and something undefinable that Wolfe felt should be regretful souls lingering, unable to move on.
“Ladies, welcome to the scene of the last battle. If I am correct, the final spell array that reshaped the world was cast from the top of that pillar.” Wolfe announced.
They all gave him a look that said it hadn’t needed to be stated. They could all feel the magic here, and the destruction that such a massive spell must have caused, even though the valley had been barren for two hundred years, with not even a blade of grass growing in the valley.
