Chapter 1087: 1087 Memorial Spire
It was when they reached the spire that everyone realized they had left the two Succubi back under the ocean, in the middle of an advancement.
Wolfe opened another shielded portal back to the main house underwater and contacted Vlad.
“We might have gotten hasty. I forgot my Succubi in the advancement rooms.” He explained.
“That will be fine, Patriarch. They need at least two or three days of rest to absorb the amount of energy that you imbued them with. They won’t wake up for some time now that they’ve started the advancement.” Vladimir replied seriously, though Wolfe could hear the effort it took to say that with a straight face.
“Please inform me the moment they wake up. I would prefer to be there before they are moving again.”
“Understood, Patriarch. Have you found the location?”
“Yes, we’re just coming in sight of it now. The damage to the surrounding area is extreme, but I can sense chaotic lingering magic, which is making it impossible to tell if there are any intact spells at the location.” Wolfe explained.
“I will be in contact when your two pets awaken from their advancement stupor.”
Wolfe cut the link, and noticed that the others were staring at him.
“What?”
“Did the vampire just call a pair of Rank Seven Succubi your pets?” Mollie, one of the twin witches from the first Pentacle, asked.
Mary laughed. “Ooh, can we give him Demon Tamer as a title? Perhaps the Incubus King? No, that one’s taken.”
Ella patted the excited Fluffy Saintess on the head. “Calm down, we will get him a proper name after he is King. For now, focus on the task at hand. There is some very strange magic in that spire of stone, and we don’t want to get hit with some mutated curse.
But we also don’t want to dispel it all and lose any hints of what might have happened at the very end of the war.”
They approached slowly and found the area in ruins. Everything was scorched black, and there were multiple collapsed buildings on the surface, but Wolfe could sense that the spells that kept the underground levels protected were still intact.
How safe it would be to approach, much less try to enter, was questionable, but he could see the mana flow of the intact arrays through the jumble of damaged spells.
“Where do we even start?” Cassie muttered as they got close enough to see the full extent of the damage.
As Wolfe had feared, the nukes had broken the barriers once there was nobody with the energy to keep them filled. Everything was scoured bare, but the buildings had been made of enchanted stone, so they hadn’t completely crumbled, and there were some intact blocks scattered around the foundations.
“Why don’t we start here? There are some intact blocks, and there might be Witch Magic on them. With this jumble of residual energy, it’s hard to tell, but there might be some signs that could give us clues about the past.” Wolfe suggested as he stepped down from the platform.
He left it half a metre off the ground so that it didn’t interfere with the lingering spell effects on the ground. If they were lucky, they might get their answers without damaging anything.
This might be the ideal place geographically for him to advance, but it could be considered a very valuable historic site as well.
“Can we clean up these lingering curses? They’re not targeted at anything, it’s just lingering in the air, like the remnants that were in the Frozen Wastes before we started the cleansing.” Cassie suggested.
“If it’s just a leftover aura, I don’t see any harm in removing it. I would like to keep relics of the war, but we don’t need to keep the lingering combat magic.” Wolfe agreed.
The Witches laughed, and then linked hands, while the Demons watched with great interest.
They had heard that Witches had cooperative magic, but it was rarely used, so most of them hadn’t seen it firsthand. All fifteen Saints had come along, including Priya, which gave them ten Saint Rank witches standing in a group.
“Wait, if you go to the middle of the platform, by the melted stone, there is a circle of some sort left there. I can see the carvings on the ground. I think it’s a ritual circle.” Wolfe announced.
There was no magic active on it, so he hadn’t noticed right away, but once he spotted the runes on the ground, it wasn’t hard to recognize.
The group spread out to clear the rubble from the ground without damaging the remaining runes.
Some sections had been smashed away, but much to their relief, what they found was not a complex spell circle, but a form of welcoming artwork, written in the runic alphabet.
[Welcome visitors … City of Arbour… Home o… All Are Welcome]
Then, once they moved a large block, they found an image on the other side and a golden inscription circle.
“That’s a portal inscription. This must have been the arrival point for visitors.” Ella noted.
Mary pointed at the picture. “More importantly, it was the ground floor of a tower, which is now mostly gone. I think that the melted stone was the majority of the tower, but the blocks were individually enchanted, and not all of them melted in the blast.
The rough ground must be mostly melted stone from the heat of the blast that destroyed the city.”
The image was a map of the building, listing business names and office numbers. The tower would have had seven floors, and the top floor was listed as [Public ceremonies and Rituals].
“Do you think that this was where the final spell was cast?” Risa asked, flaring her wings for balance as she moved another large stone to reveal preserved marble floor tiles underneath.
“It’s the centre of the remaining pillar of stone, so it would make sense. I think that they set a safe area around themselves when they remade the world, and that’s why this pillar remains intact.
This was the level of the surrounding ground before the spell was cast. There was most likely an entire mountain around the spot before.” Wolfe added.
In the memories that he had from King Drider, they were on a platform, and it was a small village in the mountains, but there was definitely a mountain here that was now gone.
