Vol 2 Chapter 55: The Daoist Squirrel
Though Lin Jing couldn’t leave the blood pool area, it didn’t mean he was without options to seek other opportunities. He could simply send a pet instead. With the strength of the Pine Leaf Mouse, Lin Jing wasn’t worried about it encountering trouble.
Deploying the mouse wouldn’t affect his situation either. With his Qi Refinement Eleventh Stage cultivation, enhanced by the Ice Soul Gu, plus the mosquito swarm and Dragon Palace’s members, few could pose a threat to him.
Lin Jing patted the gourd hanging from his waist, releasing a beam of red light. A squirrel spirit riding on a red leaf soared out, instantly capturing everyone’s attention.
“What is that…?”
The crowd gawked at the Pine Leaf Mouse, whose appearance had undergone a dramatic transformation. Most striking was its wide, maple leaf-shaped tail, clearly not made of flesh but of plant material. Its crimson leaf-like ears further underscored its unnaturalness.
“Is that still the same squirrel?”
The Pine Leaf Mouse, unfazed by the stares, retrieved a pristine white daoist robe from its storage pouch and draped it over itself. The robe’s elegance replaced the mouse’s earlier unsettling aura with an air of immortal refinement.
“Foundation Establishment!” Liu Yu, the three-eyed genius, raised an eyebrow. For a Beast Tamer, the advancement of a pet to Foundation Establishment was akin to achieving the stage oneself. However, Liu Yu was stunned to realize Lin Jing intended to send this pet alone to vie for a treasure against a group of geniuses. While the mouse’s appearance suggested a significant bloodline enhancement, sending it solo against numerous experts seemed laughable.
Is Lin Jing being overly naïve? Liu Yu thought.
The Pine Leaf Mouse, calm and composed, flew off on its red leaf, brushing past Liu Yu’s group in a flash.
“Doesn’t he fear his pet will be killed?” Liu Yu muttered, puzzled. Nevertheless, he and the others moved on, leaving the Dragon Blood Pool behind to pursue another hunt elsewhere.
Back at the pool, Wang Xiao struggled to calm his King-Bloodline Battle Tiger, which growled uneasily. Of all the beasts present, only the tiger seemed to sense the Pine Leaf Mouse’s terrifying bloodline. Lesser beasts, oblivious to the mouse’s power, barely reacted.
“What is he hiding…?” Wang Xiao’s unease deepened. He had initially thought Lin Jing’s taming of the mosquito swarm was sheer luck. Now, he was convinced otherwise. Despite having nurtured a powerful battle pet of his own, Lin Jing’s enigmatic Pine Leaf Mouse remained beyond comprehension.
“You’re really sending just that squirrel? Not worried?” Wang Xiao asked from outside the blood pool.
“No need,” Lin Jing replied, closing his eyes and resuming meditation.
Meanwhile, the instructors observing from above marveled at the Pine Leaf Mouse.
“Could it have consumed a Treant Pill to alter its bloodline?” one instructor speculated.
“The mouse seems to be a Foundation Establishment spirit beast with a peculiar bloodline. It’s clearly hiding its true strength, much like Tang Yun does,” another added.
The Pine Leaf Mouse’s power concealment stemmed from advanced use of the Sacred Wood Seal, a technique originating from the Divine Pine. By masking cultivation and bloodline strength, it created an illusion of mediocrity. Only a high-level spiritual probe could break the seal, which would be quite impolite in this situation.
The Pine Leaf Mouse’s destination was a peculiar mountain peak shrouded in relentless rain, though the surrounding terrain remained normal. The rain, colorless and seemingly ordinary, originated from a towering plant within the mountain—a verdant, majestic tree with silver-veined leaves and delicate flowers. This tree absorbed moisture from the air and released it as rain.
“Impossible.”
Attempts by various geniuses to pierce the rain barrier failed spectacularly. Protective True Energy, enchanted treasures, and elemental escape techniques were all rendered useless. Even flying vehicles lost their power halfway through and crashed to the ground.
“This is likely a Fourth-Rank Malignant Plant, the Rainfall Bodhisattva, a dangerous species from the Misty Forest,” Chen Lingxi of the Divine Talisman Sect remarked. Her talismans were particularly vulnerable to the rain, leaving her powerless to advance.
The Rainfall Bodhisattva’s rain corroded magical energy, even affecting Core Formation cultivators. Under normal circumstances, the geniuses gathered here wouldn’t challenge the plant. Yet, the radiant treasure light emanating from within the mountain was too tempting to ignore.
Suddenly, a flash of red streaked by—it was the Pine Leaf Mouse, flying nimbly on its red leaf. The geniuses froze, stunned by the sight of the small creature gazing intently at the treasure light within the rain barrier.
“What is that…?”
Some, like Chen Lingxi, recognized traces of the mouse’s evolved bloodline.
“Could it be a rare spirit beast imported by the Academy?” others speculated.
“No way! Who’s ever seen a wild spirit beast wearing a daoist robe?!”
Before further speculation could unfold, the Pine Leaf Mouse moved. Fixing its gaze on the rain barrier, it created a narrow, rain-free path and darted through, leaving the stunned crowd behind.
“It said no one could pass through alone… but it’s not human,” Tang Yun, the 66th-ranked genius, remarked. He was a white-haired cultivator with the Innate Cloud Mist Physique, seated atop a cloud holding a thunderous spear.
“The daoist squirrel spirit clearly has a way to counter this malignant plant!”
