Vol 2 Chapter 56: The Furious Pine Leaf Mouse

“!!!”

The Pine Leaf Mouse darted through the curtain of rain, heading straight for the giant leaf of the Rainfall Bodhisattva. Beneath the colossal leaf sat a treasure chest radiating brilliance.

Overjoyed, the mouse couldn’t believe how easy it had been to obtain this treasure. Breaking through the rain seemed far less challenging than it had imagined. Merely disrupting the malignant plant’s defenses from a distance was enough to carve a pathway. The Everlasting Emperor's Longevity Art, taught by Senior Divine Pine, truly deserved its reputation as the bane of all vegetation!

With trembling paws, the Pine Leaf Mouse opened the treasure chest, only to freeze in confusion. Inside was a piece of grass paper, its surface glowing faintly, inscribed with elegant writing:

"The path of immortality is fraught with peril. The treasures you risk life and limb to obtain may not be what they seem—they could very well be traps."

The next instant, the treasure chest exploded. While the blast wasn’t particularly destructive, it was profoundly insulting.

The Pine Leaf Mouse stood there stunned, holding the ashes of the paper, a wisp of black smoke escaping its mouth. Its small heart had been utterly shattered.

“Hahahahaha...” Above the clouds, a group of gentlemen laughed uproariously at the sight of someone falling for the trap.

“Who was it that designed this trial? Using malignant plants as a test, yet offering no reward in return...”

“I believe it was Brother Cao…”

Cough, cough, Cao Ziwei glanced downward, a faint smile on his face. “Trials are meant to teach students about the dangers of the cultivation world. However, my original intention was for them to work together to cross the Rainfall Bodhisattva and share the reward. Who would’ve thought this squirrel would act alone…”

“It seems this wood-attribute spirit beast can somewhat influence the malignant plants’ behavior,” one observed.

“Well, that works too. Lin Jing hasn’t earned much treasure from this trial, so let my spirit beast suffer the loss in my place,” Cao Ziwei remarked with a grin.

The Pine Leaf Mouse, thoroughly disheartened, climbed back up the Rainfall Bodhisattva and hurled the remains of the paper away. The gentlemanly observers winced.

As the rain dissipated, the mouse sighed, preparing to leave. But with the rain’s retreat came waves of divine sense, all locking onto it.

“Big squirrel, what treasure did you manage to obtain? Show it to us,” a young man in resplendent attire said with a smile.

“Indeed, we’ve all been waiting for the rain to end to collect the treasure. Your behavior lacks courtesy,” another chimed in.

Although the others remained silent, their actions spoke volumes. Tianjiao-ranked talents, including Liu Yu, the cultivator with the triple-eyed physique, and Wang Xiao, who possessed the Heavenly God Physique, focused intently on the Pine Leaf Mouse. They seemed convinced it had acquired a valuable item.

The Pine Leaf Mouse hesitated, its small mouth opening slightly. It wanted to explain that there was no treasure at all, but seeing the surrounding geniuses’ postures, it understood no one would believe the truth.

Among those watching was even Tang Yun, ranked sixty-sixth on the Genius Rankings. He held a Thundercloud Battle Halberd, his expression one of growing interest. Although the Autumn Trial was unlikely to yield an artifact capable of changing one’s fate, the curiosity surrounding the treasure’s nature meant no one would simply let this go.

“Attack!”

Suddenly, someone made the first move. The youth in ornate robes tossed a small net toward the Pine Leaf Mouse.

The artifact, Beast-Confining Net, was crafted from dragon sinew and possessed suppressive power over beasts with bloodline abilities!

“Ah!”

The Pine Leaf Mouse was furious and aggrieved. It had already been duped—now these people dared to attack it?!

“If anyone tries to rob you, don’t hold back. Take their treasures instead!”

Lin Jing’s words echoed in the Pine Leaf Mouse’s mind. Its eyes sparkled as it stared at the Beast-Confining Net. If they could rob it… why couldn’t it do the same to them? RÄNÒꞖËŝ

Understanding this, the Pine Leaf Mouse’s gaze burned with intensity. Ignoring the descending net, it glanced at the crowd. In the next moment, its tail flicked gently, emitting a red glow that sliced the net apart.

The young man who had thrown the net froze, blood spurting from his mouth. The Beast-Confining Net had been bound to him through refinement, but with the bond severed, he suffered backlash.

The Pine Leaf Mouse grabbed the net and stored it in its pouch after completely breaking its connection to the youth. Its sharp gaze then shifted to the well-dressed attacker. With a flick of its tail, a red leaf shot toward the young man like a flying sword!

The youth’s expression changed dramatically. He attempted to retreat, but the red leaf moved faster than he could have imagined, streaking past him like a crimson flash.

Confused by the lack of pain, he quickly patted himself down, realizing something was amiss.

When he turned, he saw the Pine Leaf Mouse now standing on the same red leaf, clutching his storage pouch with glee.

“Spatial arts?” Liu Yu’s triple eyes flickered with surprise. He had detected faint spatial ripples.

“Indeed! That’s how it attacked me before!” Wang Xiao confirmed bitterly.

“Damn you! Give me back my storage pouch!” the youth shouted angrily, his eyes red with rage.

The Pine Leaf Mouse ignored him, its shimmering eyes locking onto another target: Chen Lingxi of the Divine Talisman Sect. Her storage pouch was overflowing with talismans—an irresistible temptation.

“What are you doing?!” Chen Lingxi exclaimed, hastily protecting her pouch.

Before she could react, a red leaf vanished before her eyes, only to reappear at a distance.

Moments later, a spatial fissure opened around her, spilling stacks of talismans to the ground. Chen Lingxi was momentarily dazed, and in that instant, the Pine Leaf Mouse darted in and disappeared with the talismans.

“Dead squirrel! Give them back!” Chen Lingxi roared, tears of fury and frustration welling in her eyes.

With red leaves raining down like a storm, the surrounding geniuses felt a cold chill run down their spines.

“This is too much!”

Finally, Tang Yun leapt into action. Wielding his Thundercloud Halberd, he descended upon the Pine Leaf Mouse, a storm of lightning trailing in his wake.

Boom!

Before he could strike, a massive wooden arm, radiant with Buddhist light, materialized beside the Pine Leaf Mouse. With a mighty fist, it unleashed the Diamond Subduing Demon Fist.

Tang Yun was blasted hundreds of meters away, embedding into a mountainside with a resounding crash.

The battlefield fell into stunned silence.

“Why did it just use Buddhist techniques?!”

Above, the academy gentlemen froze mid-laughter, their faces pale with shock.

“When you bully the honest, expect retribution,” a pinecone hovering in the sky muttered. "We’re kind by nature, but the world is unjust!”
