Chapter 1033: 1033 They’re Here

Wolfe and King Petros wandered the city for a few more hours, ensuring that everyone was settling in well, that the businesses hadn’t accidentally opened right next to a nearly identical vendor, and other such basic concerns.

It had all been fairly well sorted in advance, though there were still some arguments among the High Nobles who wanted vacation properties in the underground community but couldn’t get them.

But King Petros had personally chosen the ones who would be able to apply, and most of the ones complaining didn’t lose the lottery, they had not been in the contest at all.

“Now, there’s only one thing left for you to do. The city is under control, and from the sound of the conversations, the entire region practically worships you as a hero, so you just need to advance your power to become the next King.” Petros noted.

“That is true. But the last step is going to involve some lost knowledge, and I’m not certain how the Water Fae will take the news that I need to visit one of the forbidden zones in the ocean, where a sunken continent has corrupted the region.” Wolfe agreed.

“Why do you have to go there at all?” Petros asked, not sure why he would need something underwater when no magical device could help him reach the pinnacle of magical growth.

“That is where my Family home was before the war, and all of their knowledge was sunk with them, when the continent was pulled below the ocean to prevent the armies from desecrating the graves of their victims.

It was the first place attacked during the war, and there were still enough Magi then that they moved the entire continent underwater as a memorial. Unfortunately, the water Fae say that it is overrun with undead and the area has been quarantined.” Wolfe explained with a dispirited sigh.

“And yet, you want to go there anyhow, instead of looking for knowledge still hidden here on land?”

Wolfe nodded. “I know that it sounds insane, but the Magi protected their knowledge with spells that limited it to certain bloodlines. From what I can tell, my family only has Magi blood from a single family, so only their relics will be useful to me.

I have come across other sites, including a complete home of another family, with most of its spells still active, but they can only tell me the very basics, and the rest of the knowledge is locked away waiting for their own family to return.

There are likely survivors with that ancestry, but the house had two conditions. First, it had to be a Magi of Rank Three or higher, so their other bloodlines couldn’t overpower the Magi heritage. Second, it had to be predominantly from their Family.

Now, that doesn’t sound like a steep condition, and it likely wasn’t intended to be. But now, it’s virtually impossible to accomplish. There isn’t another Rank Three Magi in the world at the moment.”

“So, you intend to go to the one place where the knowledge of how to break that bottleneck naturally is still accessible, and reach for the King Rank? That makes sense, and you might as well start now, as it’s known to take centuries just to complete the process after you’ve started.

If powerful magic users didn’t live so long, I don’t think that it would be possible at all.” Petros agreed.

After all, he had worked on it for over a century without any signs of success.

If it hadn’t been for the necessity to kill the old King, he might never have made it there. Of course, that could be a skill or potential limitation, but Petros got the feeling that the pinnacle of power was never intended to be reached until a level of mental maturity and understanding was reached and refined through the years.

You couldn’t have powerful younger generations running around, able to challenge anything in the world with impunity. It would be a disaster, and any group with that ability would certainly self-destruct within a few generations.

They had enough problems keeping the younger generations in check as it was, and most of them were only at Rank Four.

“Who will be watching over the place while you’re away?” Petros asked.

“The Pentacles will be here, and the Continental Representatives often step in to assist. But the Pentacles will all be Saints soon, so they should be able to take care of most issues. We also have the ceremony to add the other two Pentacles soon, and I need to spend some time making the selections for that.

I should have a pair of them shadowing me right now, but they were reassigned to the others so that I didn’t have them sitting in on sensitive conversations.

They might have gotten to learn new things today if I had grabbed a pair. Perhaps I should go pick up where I left off.” Wolfe explained, getting sidetracked at the end.

“You’re not just going to go by the recommendations?” Petros asked.

“They serve as my advisors, and they’re going to gain immense power. So, while I listen to the advice of the others, I still make the final decision based on the ones I trust and like the best.

There are a few who, I think, will be easy inclusions, like the two Elves and one Dwarf. But that leaves two Fae to choose from, and the human group is a much less clear situation.”

“Oh, were there any that made an early impression?” Petros asked.

“Serra and Jessica seemed interesting, but I haven’t seen if they’re actually competent, or if they can keep it up beyond a first impression. The Fae have it somewhat easier, as they have their innate magic and traits to guide their growth. Humans grow up in a homogenous society, so it can be much more difficult to stand out from the others.” Wolfe explained.

Petros nodded. That made sense. In a world full of humans, it was far harder to break free of the social norms and show your true self than it was for the Fae, who were dozens of different species in a loosely associated group.
