Chapter 2254: Strange Things.
Legion-4 couldn’t believe that Sir Krissy was still hounding them. He asked in disbelief and confusion, “Forget the investigation. Isn’t he a merchant? Is it worth it to risk and sacrifice an epic being for some rank 3 girl? What does he hope to gain from this? Does he love his daughter that much?”
Legion-1 explained, “I don’t think he thought he was going to sacrifice the illusionist. He probably thought that there was very little risk to sending him here to investigate us.”
Legion-4 shook his head, “I don’t care. All I know is that he is going to pay for this.”
Legion-7 said in agreement, “Of course he is going to pay for this. None of the people who targeted us will get away with this. Why else are we preparing the curse?”
Legion-5 grinned in anticipation and said, “When we are done with them, they will be the ones asking themselves if it was all worth it, not us. Especially this merchant.”
They killed the illusionist and continued their work. The fate weaver put away the web in the room. Then the traveler came forward to get rid of the corpse.
The fate weaver continued to prepare her curse in preparation for when it would be needed. In the meantime, the gang continued to operate as normal.
No one in the gang knew that the base was attacked last night and in the morning. The only difference was that no one was allowed to enter the main building of the base without permission.
But the rule that the main building was off limits was made yesterday after the interview of the gang members for promotion. So no one suspected that the base had been attacked twice.
This put the spies in a relative peace of mind. Their peace of mind was relative because they were spies and could be discovered at any time. But since there was no indication that they had been discovered, they felt relaxed.
One of the spies was so relaxed that she only took half of the precautions that she normally takes whenever she is to meet her true employer.
She left the territory of the Golden Hammer gang completely and went to another place in the outer city. Her destination was a stable where high-quality horses are raised and kept for nobles.
To anyone watching her, it would look like she came to see and feed the horses carrots. But what she truly came to do was see one of the horse handlers.
She volunteered to brush a horse and used that opportunity to get close to the handler. The two of them worked together on the same horse while speaking to each other.
The handler asked her, “Did any strange thing happen in your gang or base recently?”
The spy asked in confusion, “Strange like what?”
So the handler clarified, “Strange, like an attack. Strange, like someone attacking your base or gang? Did anyone in your gang die? Has there been any unrest, especially today?”
The spy couldn’t think of anything remotely close to what had been described. She replied, “Nothing strange has happened. Everything is fine in the gang. There has been no unrest.”
This time, the handler couldn’t keep calm. He asked in disbelief, “Are you sure?”
She replied, “Of course I’m sure. Are you doubting my judgment? How would I miss someone attacking the gang? How could I miss something so important?”
The handler was dissatisfied with this response, but he had to accept it. He said, “I’m not doubting you. It is just that I’ve received credible information that your gang was attacked last night.”
As he said that, he began working on the foot of the horse. He was removing the horseshoe and cleaning the hoof of the foot before replacing the horseshoe with a new one.
The spy also busied herself with the large brush in her hand. She brushed the fur of the horse as if it was the most important thing to her.
The two of them worked so hard that they looked the part of unsuspecting people.
The spy said to the handler, “Anyway, there was no news of an attack. What I want to know is when my job will be over.”
The handler wanted to grit his teeth because of the frustration, but there was no need to be so frustrated while cleaning the foot of a gentle horse, so he kept his calm.
Then he replied, “Very soon. Someone will reach out to you before it happens. If they can’t reach out to you in time, they will call out your real name. Once you hear your realm name, you should know that the person is on our side.”
The spy wasn’t satisfied with the answer she got. She grumbled and said, “I’ve been hearing that for a long time. You always say “soon,” but it is never soon.”
The handler rebuked her. “You’ve taken the money, so you will do the job.”
However, this didn’t quell her dissatisfaction. She said, “You guys lied to me. When I took the job, I thought it was going to be for a week or so. But I’ve been working there for more than two months now.”
The handler knew that they were in the wrong in this matter. So he decided to appease her.
“Don’t worry about it. You will be paid more for your work. My boss is not a stingy person. He is not a merchant.”
When he said this, he laughed. But then he remembered his situation as someone cleaning the foot of a horse. He remembered that there should be nothing funny about what he was doing, so he quickly coughed to cover up his mistake.
Then he continued assuring her. “Don’t worry. Even if what my boss wants to do doesn’t work out, you will be paid handsomely for your work. And if what the boss wants to do is successful, you will be rewarded extra.”
The spy snorted in response. She only partially believed what he said.
