Chapter 333: Real Everveil.

“Why do you not understand? Everveil is an ideal world! So what if it was an illusion? As long as people living inside it don’t understand that, isn’t it fine? They are still happy, are they not?”

Reynara questioned, and Kael could not understand.

Just what in the hell was going on?

He wondered inwardly and just then—

The white infinite world around them shifted again.

Colors bled into the space around him, forming trees, buildings, clouds and… Kitsunes.

Kael looked around, curious.

Yes, Everveil was reformed again. The grass started moving with the wind again, the leaf that was stuck in the air fell gently, the leaves on the tree began to move, children’s laughter became audible again.

The life was back in this world.

Soon, however, Kael noticed something.

Reynara was nowhere to be seen.

There was only him and Vita, who was in his arms. This made him frown. He tried looking for Reynara, however, the instant he stepped forward, his surroundings changed.

He and Vitaria now stood in the middle of a vibrant festival. Kitsunes filled the streets of a town that sparkled under paper lanterns strung between tall wooden poles. The dancers danced in the wind, stalls brimmed with food and trinkets, and children ran with great enthusiasm, giggling as they chased enchanted lights through the streets.

Of course, this wasn’t Kael’s first time in these streets, he recognized this place because he had come here numerous times.

This time, however, something was different.

This time… the other Kitsunes could not see him or Vitaria. He tried calling one of the children he recognized, but then—

“Father, don’t bother.”

Vita spoke up with a solemn tone.

“Hmm? Why? What is happening?”

Kael questioned, and the Fox looked around one more time, as if making sure her observation was correct, and then—

“This isn’t a world, it is a memory.”

“A memory?”

Kael raised his eyebrow.

“Yes, this is the Everveil of the past.”

Vita nodded.

“We won’t be able to interact with anyone here.”

She explained.

“So what are we supposed to do here?”

“What else? We do what we were brought here to do.

Observe.”

The Fox muttered, and at those words, Kael turned silent and did what his daughter suggested.

He observed.

He looked around, and soon, his eyes fell on another familiar person—

Reynara.

Not the Reynara he knew, but a version from the past. Her eyes were clear, gentle, and full of pride. Her long, silky white fur shone under the golden lantern light, and her tails moved in smooth rhythm behind her. Every Kitsune bowed as she passed while she smiled at them all.

Honestly, the love her people had for her here and in the Everveil he knew wasn’t very different.

“Guardian Reynara! Guardian Reynara!”

Children ran to her, laughing as they jumped around her. She chuckled and gently lowered herself to the ground, letting them climb on her tails as if they were playful hills.

“Not so rough now,”

She smiled, nuzzling one of them gently.

“We made charms today! Do you wanna see?!”

“Of course,”

She replied softly, allowing them to hold up glowing trinkets with beaming pride. Around her, the adult Kitsunes watched with admiration. The love they had for Reynara was clear in their eyes.

Kael watched in silence.

Till now, he didn’t see anything particularly different compared to the Everveil he knew.

Well, ’till now’.

Soon, however, things changed.

“Lady Reynara! Please! Our son is sick!”

A voice was heard.

The crowd parted, and a Kitsune couple ran toward Reynara, a small boy limp in the father’s arms. His fur was dim, his tails unmoving.

Sickness.

Sadness.

Things that Everveil considered ‘imperfections’.

Kael narrowed his eyes when he saw it, and soon, he realized it. This was true Everveil. Not a perfect, but a real world.

Reynara glanced at the couple, her eyes narrowing with concern.

“Bring him to me.”

She spoke.

The father knelt, and Reynara touched the child’s forehead with her paw. Her eyes glowed with faint purple as a gentle light surrounded the boy, slowly healing him.

And then—

The boy stirred.

He opened his eyes slowly.

It was weak, but at the very least, the child was still alive.

The mother broke into sobs and hugged the child tightly. The father trembled as he bowed again and again.

“Thank you… thank you, Lady Reynara.”

“I am glad I could help.”

Reynara smiled softly.

As the family wept with joy, the festival resumed. Music picked up again. Fireworks bloomed in the sky. Kitsunes sang, danced, and cheered. Reynara stood in the center of it all, watching them, her eyes full of peace.

Kael could feel it.

She loved them.

She loved her people more than anything in the world.

It was quite a heart-warming sight, even Kael smiled lightly as he saw the festival continue.

Soon, however, the scene faded.

Kael blinked.

He now stood in the same town, but everything was darker. Rain poured from the sky. There were no lights, no music. It was the side of Everveil he hadn’t seen before.

The festive lights were removed, the town no longer looked magical, but… it looked real.

In front of Reynara’s temple, the same family from before returned.

But this time—

The child was gone.

The mother clutched a small bundle, wrapped in white. Her sobs echoed through the empty streets.

“You said… you said he would be okay…”

She cried.

Reynara stood frozen.

Her eyes trembled, her body stiff. She stared at the bundle, but couldn’t say anything.

“You said he would live!”

The mother raised her voice.

“Please… don’t blame the Guardian… she did her best…”

Another Kitsune that Kael recognized, Vixara, stood beside Reynara, trying to defend her.

“Then why did he die!?”

The mother shouted again. The father tried to hold her back, but it was clear the couple was deeply affected by their child’s death.

Reynara stood in the rain, letting it soak her fur. Her tails stopped moving.

She said nothing.

She just watched.

And Kael saw it.

That was the moment it began.

The moment everything changed.
