Vol 2 Chapter 50: Cloud Sea Mosquito Beast
These mosquito beasts had bodies that gleamed with a metallic sheen, their forms covered by tightly arranged, tiny metallic scales. In the sunlight, they reflected a cold, icy light. Most striking were their enormous wings, resembling two sharp, blood-red scythes. Their heads were unnaturally large, with compound eyes that glowed a ghostly blue and needle-like, highly developed mouthparts.
Despite each mosquito only possessing Qi Refinement cultivation, the woman under their attack seemed to face a life-threatening ordeal. Dressed in a white dress, she wielded a bamboo flute. The sound waves she created transformed into lethal invisible sword energy, scattering in all directions, leaving the surrounding flora in disarray. However, the mosquito beasts’ blood energy coalesced into a shadowy barrier. The sonic sword waves merely clanged against their forms without causing any harm.
“What kind of monsters are these? Even with my late-stage Foundation Establishment cultivation, I can’t pierce the defenses of a group of Qi Refinement beasts!” The woman’s face was filled with disbelief. Still, she continued to play the bamboo flute, holding off the relentless assault.
“Cloud Sea Mosquito Beasts—one of the Ten Terrors of the Cloud Sea Mountains and a key challenge in this Autumn Trial,” a scholarly voice explained.
“The Cloud Sea Mosquito Beast’s bloodline is peculiar. They can never reach Foundation Establishment but reproduce at an astonishing rate. In the Cloud Sea Mountains, they always move in massive swarms, with a typical group numbering at least ten thousand.”
“Even this alone wouldn’t warrant their status as one of the Ten Terrors. These beasts drink the blood of their own kind, forming a tight, almost military-like connection. When they act as a collective, their strength multiplies exponentially. Facing a swarm of these beasts is every cultivator’s nightmare. Even a Nascent Soul cultivator would hesitate to confront a million of them.”
“To keep this trial manageable for the talents, we captured only a hundred or so. Even so, it seems they’re already overwhelming for a genius ranked on the Genius Rankings.”
Within moments, over a hundred Qi Refinement mosquito beasts had pushed a talented disciple ranked on the Genius Rankings, Ouyang Chengcheng, into a dire situation. Forced to act, he threw out a magical artifact. The artifact formed a rectangular barrier, enveloping him in protection.
Bang! Crack! The beasts’ sharp proboscises relentlessly struck the barrier. Inside, the disciple of the Tianyin Pavilion sat in agitation, staring at the densely packed swarm outside. He suddenly realized he had underestimated this trial.
Despite this, he didn’t give up. He continued playing his flute, attempting to disturb the mosquitos’ minds and make them attack each other. However, their predatory instincts overpowered such tactics, leaving them unaffected. Out of desperation, he changed his tune, trying to lure other beasts into the fray to distract the swarm.
Instead of other beasts arriving, a white-robed youth appeared below the barrier. He looked up, observing the scene calmly. His arrival shifted the mosquitos’ focus entirely; they immediately abandoned their current target and surged toward the newcomer.
Ouyang Chengcheng was stunned to see the youth smile as the deadly swarm approached him.
“Poor Dragon Carp, it missed out on this delicious feast. These mosquitos are its favorite treat!”
“If I only bring back dead ones, it’ll sulk. Guess it’s time for this toy to finally prove its worth.”
Above the clouds, one of the observing teachers, Mr. Cao, squinted, clearly doubting that Lin Jing could handle the swarm. Even a Foundation Establishment cultivator would struggle with such a challenge. However, in the next moment, the gathered teachers and the Tianji Pavilion's Tianhuihua all displayed expressions of astonishment.
Boom!
Lin Jing raised his hand slightly. A surge of true energy erupted like an icy cyclone, his hair flying wildly as a chilling aura enveloped his body. He looked like a demon god descending into the mortal world. The mosquito swarm, previously united and bloodthirsty, suddenly halted mid-attack, seemingly sensing an overwhelming presence. They scattered like a defeated army, fleeing in all directions.
"Too late," Lin Jing murmured. He had already recognized the swarm and their threat level. Testing the suppressive power of his Beast Taming Physique, augmented by the Ice Soul Gu’s Ice Soul Physique, he found it far more potent than anticipated. It disrupted the mosquitos’ bloodline connection, breaking their formation instantly.
With a casual wave of his hand, lines of condensed icy true energy descended from above, forming a massive birdcage that trapped the fleeing mosquitos. Frost emanated from the energy, freezing the swarm one by one. Lin Jing then summoned his Myriad Beast Circle, tossing it above the cage. The circle expanded rapidly, releasing white ripples that captured the frozen mosquitos into its confines.
Ensuring their preservation with ice and the spatial properties of the circle, Lin Jing maintained their vitality as fresh food for the Dragon Carp. After completing this, he descended slowly to the ground, meeting the shocked gaze of the Tianyin Pavilion disciple trapped inside the barrier.
“Genius Rankings, number 92, Qin Yiran?”
“And you are…?” Qin Yiran’s voice trembled with uncertainty. She had no idea who Lin Jing was but was awed by his effortless handling of the terrifying swarm.
“Creator of the Dragon Palace, Lin Jing.”
Lin Jing cast her a glance before walking away. “You know what to do. I don’t need repayment for saving you. Just make sure everyone knows how I dealt with the Cloud Sea Mosquito Beasts.”
Qin Yiran: “???”
She stood frozen in confusion as Lin Jing disappeared into the distance.
“Did he say… Lin Jing of the Beast Taming Sect?”
“How is that possible? He’s at the Eleventh Stage of Qi Refinement!”
Even among the top ranks of the Genius Rankings, most were at the pinnacle of the Tenth Stage, with very few reaching the Eleventh—a rare extreme. Her disbelief mirrored that of the teachers who had painstakingly captured the swarm.
"Qi Refinement Eleventh Stage? When did Lin Jing achieve this level? What fortuitous encounter could have propelled him so far?" one teacher murmured. Lin Jing’s recent concealment methods, taught by Senior Pine, had hidden his progress until now. His full strength only became evident with this display.
“It’s not just the Eleventh Stage. These mosquitos lost their bloodline connection instantly. His abilities as a Beast Taming cultivator are extraordinary,” Tianhuihua remarked.
“Oh no, that’s the Myriad Beast Circle. He’s captured the entire swarm! These mosquitos are harmless to him but deadly to other students. Have we just handed Lin Jing the means to dominate the Cangmang Mountain Range?”
