Chapter 2946: The One-Eyed Sword Lord
"The Grand Elder... you mean the One-Eyed Sword Lord?" Daoist Chu asked, remembering something.
"You know his title?" The disciple looked surprised.
"I’ve heard of it... and his stories," Daoist Chu replied with a nod.
"He must be famous with that kind of title," Meng Bai said, intrigued.
"Of course. He was one of the top experts who spent years in the Immortal Court. After retiring, he returned to the sect and took up the role of Grand Elder," Daoist Chu explained.
"I’m flattered that people still remember the Grand Elder’s accomplishments," the disciple said with pride.
"It might have been a long time," Daoist Chu said with a smile, "but the Immortal Court never forgets those who made meaningful contributions."
As they soared higher toward the upper levels of the residential peak, Meng Bai couldn’t contain his curiosity any longer.
"So... what did the Grand Elder do to earn a title like the One-Eyed Sword Lord? It sounds like something out of a legend."
Daoist Chu glanced at the disciple guiding them, who simply nodded as if granting permission.
"It is something out of a legend," Daoist Chu replied with a faint smile. "Though not one carved in golden calligraphy and statues. It’s a legend etched in blood and sword scars across the Immortal Realms."
"Whoa..." Meng Bai leaned closer as they flew, eager to hear more.
Daoist Chu began, his voice calm and even. "The Grand Elder wasn’t always a towering figure. In fact, he started as just an Inner Court disciple—no different from the many others we’ve seen today. Back then, he was only at the Fourth Tribulation Stage of the Immortal Realm. Still young, unpolished, but determined."
Lin Mu listened silently, eyes reflecting a glint of respect. He already had some inkling of this tale from the Elder Hall, but hearing it again gave the man behind the title a clearer shape.
"The sect recommended him to the Immortal Court," Daoist Chu continued. "It was part of a long-standing tradition. Promising cultivators were sent to broaden their horizons and temper themselves through duty. He took the chance."
"And?" Meng Bai asked, eyes wide.
Daoist Chu’s expression turned nostalgic. "He went in as a trainee swordsman, just like I did millenniums later. But unlike most, he stayed. Not for decades. Not even centuries. He remained there for nearly seven thousand years."
Meng Bai whistled, stunned. "That’s longer than many sects have existed!"
"Indeed," Daoist Chu nodded. "In that time, he became part of the Immortal Court’s very bones. He was involved in missions, covert investigations, battlefield deployments, and cultivation research teams.
But what made him famous were his sword and his principles. They say he never drew his blade without reason—but once it was drawn, he never sheathed it until justice was served."
"The records mention that he uncovered the Twelve Gates of Rebirth Conspiracy in the Southern Aetheric Provinces in the Farlands," the Inner Court disciple added reverently. "A scheme where an unorthodox sect was cultivating immortals, only to harvest their life cycles to empower a demonic bloodline."
"He dismantled it alone," Daoist Chu confirmed. "He discovered it while escorting an envoy and traced its roots over twelve years. When he finally acted, he destroyed the entire sect in a single night, saving over two hundred thousand innocent cultivators who would have been sacrificed."
"That’s insane," Meng Bai muttered. "One man?"
"One sword," Daoist Chu said simply. "He became famous in the Immortal Court after that. But that wasn’t the event that gave him his title."
"What did?" Lin Mu asked, intrigued.
"That happened nearly three thousand years ago," Daoist Chu said, his tone growing somber. "It was during the Fall of the Ebon Tide Citadel."
"The Ebon Tide?" Meng Bai frowned.
"It was an artificial floating fortress built by a splinter group of the Abyss Root Sect," the Inner Court disciple explained. "They used it as a mobile base to abduct young immortals for soul forging experiments."
Lin Mu narrowed his eyes. "I’ve heard about that in fragments... It was eventually wiped out, right?"
"Yes," Daoist Chu said. "But it nearly wiped us out first. The Immortal Court sent three elite squads to neutralize it. All three were ambushed. The enemy used corrupted teleportation anchors and dark formations to isolate and pick them off. The Grand Elder was leading the fourth squad. He realized what was happening and—"
"Didn’t fall into the same trap," Lin Mu guessed.
"He walked straight into it," Daoist Chu corrected with a faint grin. "He allowed his formation to be isolated. But he had already reversed the formation layers using his understanding of sword. When the enemy tried to ambush them, he turned their trap back onto them."
"Still... even with that, he couldn’t come out unscathed," the disciple said quietly.
"No," Daoist Chu said, his tone dropping. "During the final clash, he faced the last two surviving lords of the Abyss Root Sect—both Transcendents who had turned themselves into half-demons through soul parasitism. The Grand Elder fought them in the corrupted core chamber of the citadel. The battle lasted three hours. He lost his left eye, had six of his meridians severed, and his dantian was on the verge of collapse."
Meng Bai winced just hearing that.
"But at the very edge of death, in the pitch-black heart of that infernal place, he broke through," Daoist Chu said. "His Sword Dao transcended. They say he carved the concept of reversal into his Sword Intent—turning all destruction aimed at him back onto his enemies."
"He became a Transcendent right there," the disciple added with pride. "And when he emerged from the ruins, holding the severed heads of the two Abyss Lords, his robes tattered and one eye gone... the surviving cultivators of the Immortal Court hailed him as the One-Eyed Sword Lord."
Silence followed.
Even Meng Bai had no quip this time. He stared ahead, quietly processing the story. The wind whistled softly past them, tugging at their robes as they flew ever higher.
