Chapter 1636 - 1636: You Can’t Outshine Someone Who isn’t Playing Your GameVillain Ch 1636. You Can’t Outshine Someone Who isn’t Playing Your Game
The silence returned—heavier now. More personal.
Noah glanced at Elio, then back at Allen. “So what’s your plan then?”
Allen didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he looked out the tavern window. Out at the night-washed streets of Ront City. Lanterns swung gently. Fog hugged the cobblestones like a whisper. And in the distance, a patrol of armored NPC guards walked by, footsteps echoing softly.
“My plan?” Allen said at last. “Is already in motion.”
Elio blinked. “Wait… what do you mean?”
Allen turned back to them, his eyes catching the firelight just so—reflecting nothing.
“I’m not here to stop her,” he said. “I’m here to let her fall.”
James leaned forward. “You set all this up?”
“Not me. Her.” Allen set his drink down and folded his hands neatly. “Because when people destroy themselves,” he said calmly, “you don’t have to get your hands dirty. You just give them the matches. The kindling. And the right time.”
Elio frowned. “That’s cold, man.”
“Necessary,” Allen replied.
James exhaled. “What if it backfires?”
Allen smirked. “It won’t.”
“How do you know?”
Allen’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“Because she’s desperate. And desperation makes people predictable.”
The air in the tavern felt heavier after that. A moment passed—slow and syrupy, like time hesitated just to catch its breath. Somewhere near the fireplace, the bard was silently tuning his lute, no longer strumming. Even the wind outside had stilled, muting the occasional creak of the old tavern shutters.
Elio tapped his mug, then spoke up, brows knit tight.
“But she still can bite back.”
Allen didn’t respond right away. He swirled the golden cider in his mug, watching the way the light played against the curved liquid surface. A lazy spiral. Like a drain.
“Yes,” he finally said, voice calm, even a little amused. “But her movement now… is getting pathetic.”
Noah leaned in, frowning. “Pathetic how?”
Allen tilted his head, gaze flicking to each of them.
“You should’ve seen it. The way she acted in the game. I watched the recordings.” He smiled, but it wasn’t a happy one. It was the kind of smile a fox made when describing the habits of cornered rabbits. “When she was with you guys… she acted like a goddess. A savior. All kind. All holy. A support saint wrapped in light spells and pretty smiles.”
James snorted. “Yeah, she was really good at playing the crowd.”
Allen nodded slowly. “Until she wasn’t.”
His fingers drummed once on the wood. “Then the fame got her. She started feeling entitled. Like the party revolved around her. Like she deserved more—gear, screen time, praise. Then Father^Alex showed up.” He let out a quiet breath, not even a chuckle. “That’s when it broke.”
“Yeah…” Elio muttered, staring into his drink. “He was good.”
“No,” Allen corrected, “he was better. And she knew it.”
Noah tilted his head. “But they had different builds—healer roles can vary.”
Allen raised a hand, silencing the logic before it could breathe. “It’s not about the roles. It’s about the presence. Alex didn’t need to grandstand. He was reliable. Fast. Always where he needed to be. You remember the last event?”
James blinked. “Yeah. Alex pulled everyone back from the brink.”
“Exactly,” Allen said. “And what did Sophia do?”
Noah’s face twisted. “She saved her mana. Didn’t cast anything until she made a barrier for herself.”
“She healed herself first,” Elio added, voice hard. “Even when the DPS were dying around her.”
Allen sipped his drink again. It was cool now, the warmth having bled away—but that didn’t seem to bother him. “She was trying to prove something. That she didn’t need the rest of you. That she could survive longer than Alex. Outlast him. Outshine him. But she couldn’t.”
The mug hit the table with a soft thud. Allen leaned forward slightly, eyes catching the candlelight again.
“Because you can’t outshine someone who isn’t playing your game.”
A thick silence wrapped around the table.
“She got angry,” Allen said simply. “Started acting reckless. Pushed her team to what they couldn’t handle. You’ve seen the behavior—every match becomes about her spotlight.”
He gave a small shake of his head. “That was nasty.”
James raised a brow. “You mean the Devil Emperor?”
Allen nodded.
“She thought she could seduce the final boss for clout,” Noah muttered, almost disgusted.
“And what did she get instead?” Elio said, voice brittle.
“A pathetic death,” Allen said flatly.
James huffed through his nose. “So you watched that recording too?”
Allen nodded.
Noah looked away, jaw tightening. “I hate her. Like really… hate her. She didn’t do anything to support the group. She acted like we were backup dancers in her little drama.”
James scratched the side of his temple. “It’s weird. She didn’t act like that before.”
“Because she didn’t have competition before,” Allen said. “She was the default. The only ‘healer queen’ in the game. But once Alex came in, with cleaner casts, better gear, better temperament? That title cracked.”
Elio leaned back, rubbing the back of his neck. “Maybe that’s why she’s so mad. She knows she can’t keep up with Alex’s endurance either. You’ve seen his gear—it’s myth-tier now.”
“While Sophia?” Noah raised a brow. “She just lost her suppliers.”
“Liam and Darren,” James said, nodding slowly.
“They stayed in Arcane Wardens,” Elio confirmed. “She went to Moonveil Sentinels thinking she could get leadership. But she’s got nothing there. No reputation. No funding. No allies. The leader is a good guy, though.”
“And she’s got real-life problems too,” Noah muttered.
Allen just sipped again, slow and quiet. The cider was bitterer now than sweet. Or maybe that was just the taste of everything going exactly as planned.
“She’ll spiral,” he said, almost to himself. “She already is.”
Elio watched him, wary. “You think she’s really that far gone?”
“I think she doesn’t know who she is anymore without the pedestal,” Allen replied. “And people like that? They always burn brighter when they’re falling.”
