When the monsters got close enough, they leaped to attack Jake with their claws and pretty much at the same time. Jake learned a long time ago that waiting for them to finish their attacks wouldn't be a good idea, so he charged forward and then attacked one of them with his sword after using Fire Enchantment. He didn't hold back with his attack, but his sword only cut a small layer of the monster's flesh.
"The fur is too thick… it got in the way," Jake thought while he was turning around and saw the enemies landing on the spot he had been a few seconds ago.
Jake had attacked the chest of one of them. Naturally, it would be one of the most areas where the fur would be the thickest. Still, it would have been hard to aim for the head of one of them at that moment.
The monsters turned around and dashed toward him again, but it looked like this time they wouldn't jump and make the same mistake as before. Instead of that, one of them used Hoar and almost made Jake go deaf. While the creature failed at that, it managed to paralyze his legs.
While clicking his tongue, Jake used Boomerang Shield on the face of one of the frozen grizzlies and then used Flames of Wrath on another. Jake managed to stop two of the monsters in their tracks, but there was another one who got too close, and it was about to swing its claws at Jake. Using his sword to block the attack when he couldn't move his legs wasn't a good idea, so Jake just turned his body to the side and dodged one of the claws before using Flamberge to impale the other. The beast grunted in pain while its flesh was being pierced by the weapon.
To make sure that the beast wouldn't try that again, Jake spun his sword and then opened a larger wound on the creature's paw, and while it was busy grunting, Jake moved away and recovered his shield.
"I thought that a melee enemy would be easier to hunt, but I was wrong…" Jake thought. "They aren't much stronger than the crows, but…"
While his dark flames were causing some damage, Jake could see the monster enduring that. It was no wonder since they had both physical and magical Resistances at a pretty decent level. Meanwhile, Jake's magic mostly was determined by the level of the skills he used.
While the wounded grizzly stayed behind, the other two charged toward Jake. It was a bit risky, but he had an idea. After charging Concentrated Strike for a short while, Jake also used Explosive Touch and hit the first monster's left side. Despite the creature's size, Jake's attack pushed the beast to the side and made it collide against the other grizzly. The impact stopped both of them for a few seconds, and Jake used that change to attack the face of one of them with all his might. Fire Enchantment, Explosive Touch, Sonic Thrust… Jake used all of those to attack the face of the defenseless monster and then pierce it until it hit their head.

That took a while, but at least now Jake had a clear method of handling those creatures. Still, one of the grizzlies he had knocked down finally got up, and the one who got wounded in the arm approached as well. Still, before they could attack him, Jake used Boomerang Shield on the wounded one and targetted the wounded side. Forcing the beast to use the other arm to block the projectile and leaving it wide open for an attack since its stance had been broken. Naturally, Jake dashed to use that opportunity.
Jake used the same combo as before, but this time, he targetted the heart of that monster. Even if the chest area had thick fur, it could only protect the beast for so long against such a combo of skills. Besides, Flamberge wasn't a bad weapon for thurst attacks, so it pierced all the way through the monster's heart.

When Jaked finished off that monster, the last one finally attacked him with its claws. Jake barely recovery his shield on time to block the attack. Still, the sheer weight of the monster's body behind the attack forced Jake to slide dozens of meters backward. The slippery ground helped a bit with that, but even so… Jake felt that some of his ones had cracked a little bit.
The monster charged at Jake again, and he moved to the right side of the beast, the side where the arm was hurt. The creature had a hard time attacking like that since it didn't want to attack with the wounded arm, and while the beast was having a hard time solving that issue and making up its mind, Jake dashed.
While aiming at the head of the monster, Jake used that combination of skills. Fire Enchantment, Explosive Touch, Sonic Thrust… while aiming at the head of the beast. The creature was fast enough to react and try to block the strike with the other arm, but while it had been enough to stop Jake, the beast still fell backward, which sealed its fate. From that angle and situation, Jake had the chance to attack the way he wanted, and he used Sonic Thrust several times until it pierced the creature's remaining arm and eventually pierced its head as well.

"Oh, man… these things sure are tough," Jake thought after taking a deep breath. "Still, I guess it is only natural since I can use their fur, eat their meat, and even use their claws as well."
Jake had planned to sell some stuff on Frederick's guild, but due to the nature of that announcement, he decided to give up on that. Still, it doesn't seem like many people visited that world, so he will have the chance to sell those materials… if finding humans to sell them would be a pain, perhaps Jake should look for other people.
