"Why do you need this job so badly?" Zhenyi asked out of nowhere, surprising the young lady.
'Didn't the other maids say she was akin to a she-devil?' the young mused. ' But she doesn't look like the rumors at all. Instead, she looks sad. And perhaps, broken-hearted too.'
She remembered that Zhenyi actually asked her something. She mentally slapped herself.
"Actually, I want to attend college next year and to attend college I need money. So, yeah… I need this job very very badly."
Zhenyi went through the drawers as if looking for something. Once she found what she was looking for, she returned. She threw several cards and bundles of cash before the young lady.
She folded her arms over her chest and said," Take as much as you want and attend college this year. Why wait for a year? And please close the door on your way out."
Zhenyi cast one last look on the box again and then sat on the bed. Of course, she was not so soft-hearted, she just wanted to get rid of this maid as soon as possible.
Since that brief, screaming interaction with her husband, she had been trying to conceive a plan to get over this all-consuming guilt trap that she had woven in her head by overthinking it a million times.
She could talk to him. Or she could simply ignore him. However, she already told herself that she would do that, and look where it had gotten her: locked in her own room, striding back and forth, and no matter how much she halted herself to not look in the direction of the white box, it still went there all the time.
The most feasible option was to pull out the contents of the box and wear it as he wanted her to. That might cause an issue in itself, but at least her mind and heart wouldn't be against each other.
The problem was, if this were possible, she would have already done it. She couldn't face him or her Bà without breaking down again. And if she did it again, he would be suspicious of her and she didn't want to cause any more worry to anyone.
Frustration drove through her, and she pulled her hair in exasperation.
Her husband was unnecessarily getting mixed in her problem. He didn't deserve it. She had already done a lot of damage to his mental health and don't want to pose anything more threat to his peaceful life.
So, she reached the conclusion: avoid him and problem solved.
After all, she didn't have so much faith in herself as her life and already been a soap opera. A motherless child, a single father, an ill grandfather, a mysterious brother, miserable her and her current marital life. What else she needed to add to make it more sappy?
The sound of someone's throat-clearing jerked Zhenyi out of her dreamland and she glanced forward to find the same maid again. Didn't she already ask her to leave her alone?
"Aren't you leaving now?" Zhenyi asked as she wrinkled her nose in contempt. "What else do you want? Take whatever you want and never come back."
The maid gazed at the arrogant spoilt brat and inwardly shook her head. Earlier, she appeared kind of sad to her but right now, she was brooding for no reason at all.
"Can I take the box?" She dared to ask.
Something snapped inside Zhenyi. How dare she?
The maid didn't miss Zhenyi shooting a sharp glare in her direction. She just knew she had hit the sore point of Xin Zhenyi and this was what she was hoping to try with an arrogant princess such as her.
There was a murderous look inside her eyes. Those mismatched eyes of hers were burning as Long Jie once said they were like dormant volcanoes. You don't know when they start simmering.
"Look at the box again and I will pluck your eyes out with my hands."
There was the real Xin Zhenyi, the girl thought to herself. No wonder, the poor maids were frightened around her.
"Ma'am, you won't come down with me. You won't give me the box either. Aren't you being stubborn for no reason? Your husband is waiting for you downstairs for a long time. You may not care about anyone, but can you please come down for a minute just for his sake?"
She desperately needed the job here to support her higher studies but she saw how badly her husband was waiting for her downstairs. He had prepared such a meaningful and romantic surprise for her but the woman was hellbent on ruining it for him and herself too.
Zhenyi clearly wanted it but God knew why she was fighting it.
Zhenyi shook her head and let out a bitter chuckle as she sat on the corner of the bed.
Of course, she was fighting her longing to go to him and hug him as tight as she could, but…
Zhenyi side-eyed her with a mysterious expression as she took her face and asked in a very calm voice yet apathetic voice," What's your name?"
"Jin Ada, Ma'am."
'Jin Ada,' Zhenyi repeated in her head. What an unusual name!
"What course will you be choosing, Miss Jin?"
"I've not decided yet."
"Go for Law," Zhenyi suggested. She made a very good argument and since she would be now attending the college, she must decide which course she wanted to go for, right?
Ada nodded her head in confusion.
