Undai District, Chimizu Park.
“Dad, what are we doing out here?” Kumoko yawned. Heavy-eyed, she said to her father, “I don’t want to go shopping today, I want to sleep.”
Mitsue Natsume felt contented, looking at his daughter’s sluggish look. He caressed her head and said to her warmly, “Kumoko, we are moving. There are not many customers here, so let’s find somewhere lively, where Kumoko will be able to make some friends too.”
“Really?” Kumoko’s sleepiness faded in a flash, feeling somewhat astounded.
“Of course!” Mitsue Natsume hugged Kumoko as he answered her, hinting at Kumoko that she could continue sleeping, but his walking speed was rather fast.
Sleep was not essential for specters, but Kumoko was almost like normal humans. She needed to sleep every day. If not, she would feel sluggish and tired.
It was all credited to the power of the Seven Emotions Soul Preservation Spell.
Kumoko’s death was not in the hands of an enemy or a road accident, and she was also not killed off as a hostage. She just drowned accidentally.
13 years ago, his wife Natsuki Natsume was hospitalized for an incurable disease. It was a massive blow on Mitsue Natsume. He loved his wife very much, and as a Cultivator, he did not want to be separated from his wife by death. He went on searching for methods of resurrection, a way to turn a person into a specter after death.
Resurrection was close to impossible, but he was desperate to keep his wife by his side.
His wife was bedridden back then, so she could not take care of their daughter. Mitsue Natsume, on the other hand, was engrossed in researching the Seven Emotions Spell, which made him neglect his daughter too. But back then, Kumoko was still in kindergarten under the care of the teachers, which was what kept him at ease.
However, that one time, when the kindergarten organized a field trip, his daughter left the teachers’ surveillance and drowned by accident. She was found dead.
Because Natsuki Natsume was the one who kept in contact with the kindergarten teachers, so in a panicky and agitated state, they immediately called her to inform her of Kumoko’s death. Upon hearing the news, Natsuki Natsume had an emotional breakdown and died in bed right away.
When Mitsue Natsume received calls from the hospital and the kindergarten, he almost collapsed as well. His internal reiki burst inside of him at once, and he nearly left the world with his family. Fortunately, he had a strong mentality which was soon able to take control over his mixed up reiki.
He held back his feelings of despair and visited the hospital first. As soon as he realized that his wife’s soul did not transform into a specter, he immediately rushed to where his daughter drowned, ignoring the doctor who was dumbfounded by his acts.
Thankfully, when he got to the scene, Kumoko’s soul was standing by the lake, looking lost and sorrowful because no one responded to whatever she said. She felt pain in the presence of humans’ Yang energy, which made her cry and scream.
Mitsue Natsume could not hold back his tears when he saw this scene. He went over to hug his daughter’s soul and used the Seven Emotions Soul Preservation Spell, which he had experimented with to surround Kumoko’s soul to protect her. He did not succeed in creating a spell to ensure the transformation of human to the soul after death, but he managed cast spells to protect souls.
He did not return home even after settling the matters regarding his wife and daughter.
Since her daughter’s wish was to return home, so if he returned, his daughter’s wish would have been fulfilled. She would then vanish into reiki, which was not what he wanted. However, his Seven Emotions Soul Preservation Spell was just developed, so it was still flawed.
That was why Mitsue Natsume brought his daughter to live in another district instead of bringing her home. Even so, he didn’t dare to stay at a place for long because he was afraid that his daughter would consider the place as their home, and her soul would fade away. He would regret bitterly if that had happened. So, he would move their house every two to three months despite his daughter being displeased and having a hard time getting used to it. All he could do was comfort her.
During those times, he accompanied his daughter during the day and continued his research on the Seven Emotions Soul Preservation Spell. At night, he would set up a stall to gather emotions and searched for spirits after that as his experimental subjects.
After three years, he finally succeeded in developing the Seven Emotions Soul Preservation Spell, whereby it could keep souls from fading even if their wishes were fulfilled. They could grow up just like humans, their souls too would grow as they age. Kumoko continued growing. Appearing like she was 14-years-old, she was actually already 18.
However, the foundation of the Seven Emotions Soul Preservation Spell was the seven emotions, which was used to preserve one’s soul. Therefore, when they had settled down in Tokyo, he spent time accompanying his daughter during the day. While she was napping, he would then go to places such as amusement parks, funeral parlors, hospitals, and institutions to gather the seven emotions. He could gather emotions by setting up a stall at night too, but most importantly, he wanted to let Kumoko enjoy life.
He finally realized that ‘fear’ was too little among the seven emotions, which could hardly be found in the funeral parlors and hospitals. He once thought of collecting them from haunted houses or cinemas, yet he failed to gather ‘fear’ from those places, which puzzled him. Only then he realized the reason behind it after further observations and investigations.
Humans have different emotions every day, but there are genuine ones and also fake and insincere ones.
For example, the crowd visits haunted houses to experience the feeling of being scared upon. But when a person already knew that the ghosts in the haunted houses were actually workers who dressed up, he would only feel shocked, but not fear. Because one’s subconscious would know that they were fake!
Humans would experience fear only when they were actually facing death. Even the hospitals were not loaded with the emotions of fear, because most elderly had lived long enough and would not be fearful when facing it, they would take it calmly. For those who were open-minded, even if they were informed with an incurable disease, they would only think about how to spend their remaining time meaningfully. They could not care much about being fearful of death.
Mitsue Natsume made a decision after understanding these facts, he did not kill anyone with his own hands. He knew if he ever committed a crime, he would have to pay the price, the Deity Rising Palace would not spare him. He still needed to accompany and watch Kumoko grow, which drove him to search for demons. He would first use the Six Emotions Spirit Regeneration Spell on them and take control of their consciousness, then the Six Emotions Masking Spell would be used to cover up the odor of the demons. It is only after this that he will command the demons to kill.
The Seven Emotions Spirit Regeneration Spell was initially invented by Mitsue Natsume’s grandfather, while the Seven Emotions Masking Spell came from his father. These spells were then modified by him, with the emotion of fear being removed from the seven emotions and uses only six emotions instead to trigger the consciousness of demons and masking them.
Nevertheless, with the lack of ‘fear,’ the masking powers of the spell was not intact. This was why Kimura Kazuki was able to detect a faint odor when he rushed to the scene where Ri Takayanagi died.
Kimura Kazuki was right with his theory. Mitsue Natsume had already started commanding demons to kill people since eight years ago, which led to countless death cases throughout the country. Those demons were then annihilated by the Deity Rising Palace and the Department of Mysteries.
Mitsue Natsume was smart, he would query the reason behind the demons’ death after recovering their consciousness. He would then make use of their death to appoint them to bring harm to others.
Taking Natsuna Yamanaka as an example, he hated Eri Shiratori after his death and owned the same hatred toward b*tches like her. That was why Mitsue Natsume then appointed Natsuna Yamanaka to kill women. Even if those incidents were later found out by those from the Deity Rising Palace, they would have thought it was just the wrongdoings by the demons instead of involving Mitsue Natsume.
“What a waste...”
Mitsue Natsume knew that everything was because of the Stone of Fear.
