The Runic Alchemist

Chapter 690 - 690: The New Keeper Of The Sanctuary

“A display of power to them would make our life much easier though,” Sam said. “Can we get all parties to meet so we can at least try to resolve it verbally?”

“I can contact my mother,” Evrin said. “The Emperor will be interested in any idea that would stop the demons—but Faerunia won’t comply as long as they think they’re in an advantageous position.”

“They won’t be in advantage much longer,” Damian said calmly.

“You will join the fight?” Maelor asked, surprised.

“There is a difference between attacking their home and reclaiming what is rightfully ours. Land-breaker already ordered Helldtorm to leave Edgeheaven by tomorrow—we too will have to make the unwelcomed guests leave with a gift they will never forget for years. We will make a show of it so any country will shake in fear just thinking about laying eyes on Sanctuary’s land. This is and will be the safest place in this world—our people must realize that first and foremost. It is our duty to make them feel safe here.”

Everyone stared at him for a second in silence. Then suddenly, all started speaking at once.

“Exactly!”

“That’s the Damian I know!”

“I was thinking the same thing..”

“We could capture all their people and force Faerunia to do as we say in exchange for that..”

“Blowing them all to pieces would be a much better option..”

“We should issue a warning though and give them a chance to surrender..”

“Damian..” Suddenly Einar called his name loudly. All speaking quieted down and turned towards her. Damian also looked at her.

She exchanged looks with Evrin and then stood up from the chair.

“We built this city because of the vision you made us see. Many—or most, I should say—have been saved by you in more ways than one, including me. Before, I resented you for taking my only chance of having justice out of my hands.. But after meeting my own younger self and seeing the fire of vengeance consuming everything she did.. I never thanked you for that, and that was the only regret I had for all these years.

“Truly.. thank you for saving me. Because of you, I have things I would never have dreamt of having—I have love. Didn’t even know I could feel that emotion anymore..

“This is your city, your home—you are the soul of it. Only you can do justice to it.

“Would you.. take over as the Flamewarden?”

Currently, the ruling system Einar and the rest had for Sanctuary was the same as any region in this continent, but instead of one ruler, there were three.

Einar, the Crimson Seat of Power—also called Flamewarden—managed the military and security of Sanctuary and was chosen as the Keeper of Sanctuary, a leader among the three rulers.

The other two were Evrin, the Ember Seat of Stone—also called Stonekeeper. And the last was Souldealer, the Golden Seat of Truth—also called Luminary.

Einar was not offering just her seat of power but also the leadership position of the three—she wanted him to become the Keeper of Sanctuary, the highest authority of all things related to Sanctuary.

“Names don’t matter—I will do what I need to do anyway,” Damian replied when they kept staring at him.

Einar smiled. “That is why we need you to be the face of the Sanctuary—I’m sure it’s not just my wish, but most people in this town want that to happen. Nothing would help them feel more secure. The change signifies the new era of Sanctuary that will be written after today.”

Damian had not planned to invest himself so much in bureaucracy—guess he could change the system to be more democracy-based once things were stable enough.

He nodded, accepting the position without any words.

“Now that is a cause for celebration!” Grace said, raising her glass of alcohol high from Sam’s arms.

“To the new Keeper!” everyone cheered.

“To the money the new Keeper will make for us!” Damian heard—not so sincere—a cheer from the woman with long ears and a mischievous smile on her face.

Was Evrin technically a teenager now?

They drank till late in the night, even though a transcendent barely felt the effect—then everyone barged into any nearby empty rooms they could find to sleep half-drunk. One room had six people in it—sleeping in all kinds of weird positions.

Damian and Lucian had sense enough to find their own room and do a little celebration of their own.

There were still a lot of things to do, but it would be nothing compared to what they had been through this past year and survived. Many had been lost, and many had to grow up much faster than they should have, but all in all, they were just happy to live for another day.

Especially Damian—for the first time since coming to this world, he found himself at peace.

This indeed felt like.. a home.

Night ended, and came a new bright day. Einar and Evrin had stopped Land-breaker and Mindseer from leaving for their island before attending the official meeting.

No one knew that Land-breaker had lost access to his mana except the Land-breaker himself and Damian.

All had gathered in the largest room of the keep—Land-breaker, Mindseer, the three seats of Sanctuary: Einar, Evrin, and Souldealer.

Souldealer was not alone though—the Dawnstar prince still had the support of the lords that had survived the battle, especially after his father had entrusted the Soul of Dawn to him.

The legendary sword that was said to be the strongest weapon in history.

And it had indeed been proven worthy of its fame in the war against the Empire. It was a very risky decision taken by the king of Dawnstar giving the sword away before going to fight against the Emperor for the last time.

Damian felt a light headache. So did everyone who had been with him last night. Einar had told him they would make the change official today and reveal it to the public.
