The Runic Alchemist

Chapter 677 - 677: Is That Really You, Commander?

The thousands of pigmen had built camps right outside. There was a large flat land outside the wooden building; Damian had kept it such when he built the giant steel golem.

Heather, along with his family and some high-ranking pigmen, were given a room inside the wooden building. After asking how everyone was doing, Damian gathered all of them outside the building. Standing in a circle, the second-ranker pigmen soldiers had crowded behind them. All in all, there were some 34,000. Around 60% of those were not from the pigmen city. They were the ones who had been rescued by Damian after the darkness inside of them was pulled out by the demon lord. Damian sensed not a tinge of that guy’s malevolent mana from them—it was safe to assume they were clear of that thing.

According to Karl and others, the pigmen army had arrived after four hours of them leaving for the war. And it had been a month since—meaning they had been gone for at least 20 years. Earth’s time compared to the pigmen world was 188 times slower. That demon lord’s trap was indeed vicious.

Damian didn’t even want to find out what the time difference between their world and Earth would be this time. He explained their situation in detail. There were two options: they could stay here—but it wouldn’t be here in London, rather in the North Pole or South Pole—the cold environment there was perfect for these pigmen with high endurance. And the other option was to come with them inside the Highsword Dungeon.

Damian left the pigmen alone with Heather to make a decision for themselves and moved into their base. This was their last day here on Earth. He told everyone to pack up. Only a month had gone by since he had left for the pigmen world, so there wasn’t much development from what their earlier status was.

There was still a lot of steel in the warehouse; Damian stored all of that in his spatial storage. He did not meet with Earth’s people. This place was deep inside the forest, and royal decree had forbidden any man to come near it as a friendly gesture for their guests. Toph and Jacob did not leave his sight for even a second. Elias and Lumi also followed behind him everywhere he went.

Even when Damian told them he was going somewhere really dangerous, they did not move an inch. Finally, he had no choice but to take the whole Dreamlight along with Elias, Lumi, Jacob, and Toph to the island where he had imprisoned Landbreaker. Just in case, he also took Mindseer with him.

She had no idea why he brought her along on Dreamlight as they ascended in the air. Lucian and Sam too were with them. Actually, now that he remembered, he had never mentioned to anyone that he had caught Landbreaker.

“How well do you know Landbreaker?” Damian asked Mindseer, seated beside him and Lucian.

It was Elias flying—not Damian. He let him fly aimlessly above the forest, slowly reaching the island where Landbreaker required a waygate, which he did not use yet.

Mindseer’s face showed signs of sweet sadness as she answered, “He was good to me, but he was still our commander. The only person I ever truly respected unconditionally—till I saw you scare away that darkness bastard. Why are you asking about him?”

Lucian and Sam also leaned to the side, interested in hearing the answer.

“When I was fighting him, there came a moment when the demon lord left a human body behind, pulling all the dark energy out of him just like he did with all those pigmen.”

Mindseer’s lips trembled. “Wh.. Who is this man?”

“A fourth ranker for sure. It has to be him,” Damian confirmed.

He heard Lumi and Elias gasp from the other side as Lucian and Sam had eyes wide as buttons. Mindseer had completely frozen and had stopped working completely.

Damian looked at Elias and gestured for him to look forward—then he launched the big waygate for the Dreamlight to pass through. In seconds, along with Dreamlight, Damian was above an island. Elias took a few seconds to take control; Damian kept the ship from going down till he regained focus and quite gracefully landed Dreamlight on the sandy beach. He had noticed him flying Dreamlight extra carefully and looking toward him constantly, showing his improved flying skills—it made him smile.

The man named Landbreaker was awake. He was seated on the beach when they arrived, but seeing them land, he stood up. Damian told Elias and the others to stay inside and keep ready to fly away at the first sign of trouble. Only the four Transcendents jumped down the ship’s entrance.

There was an invisible box spell covering the whole island. His mana containers were still powering the spell. Damian could also feel the man called Landbreaker’s emotions through the divine seeker spell, which he had used on him to seal away his mana. He was not angry or hopeful seeing them—there was nothing there except sadness. There was a tinge of happiness in his mind when his eyes landed on Mindseer among them.

Damian picked up his runic tool and cancelled the spell, storing everything back in his spatial storage. The Landbreaker did not move from his position—they walked up to him. His eyes were only focused on Mindseer, though, as he smiled.

“Is that really you, Commander?” Mindseer asked, tears in her eyes.

She was a strong warrior—Damian had seen her slaughter thousands himself—but in front of her commander, she fell apart like a little girl holding too much responsibility when her parents were gone. The Landbreaker too embraced her with affection without saying any words. He gently patted her head as his eyes wandered onto Damian and the two beside him.

A sense of regret? No, it was a slight relief filled with hidden frustration. But among all the emotions, Damian also sensed fear? That was unexpected.
