A needle dropping could be heard loudly inside the room.
Rex, Amanir, the maids, guards, and even Kraken stared at the small knife in utter shock.
Initially, when the maids and guards heard what Rex said, all of them thought of a ghost disturbing them, as the mansion was quite old. Unlike within the Mortal Realm, where Ghosts were real, the people here knew Ghosts as a scary, invisible monster.
One that neither life energy nor magical phenomena could explain.
It doesn’t matter whether these people have the strength to crush rocks with their bare hands.
A Ghost is still a Ghost—all of them were scared of it.
Seeing the small knife fly towards Rex without the manipulation of life energy or other type of energy, naturally scared them. For Amanir, this was even more bizarre. A Ghost would still leave a trace, but this small knife didn’t.
Naturally, he thought a higher power was involved.
One that he couldn’t comprehend.
But this was way worse for Rex as he had the System inside of him, a construct that was certainly above Gods. Even then, when he scanned the small knife with the System, it stated that the small knife was a normal utensil.
Nothing particularly unnatural about it.
So, that begged the question, what moved the small knife?
“What the fuck…?”
As soon as Amanir’s voice broke the silence, Rex immediately dropped the knife and leaped backward.
He knocked the sofa in the process, wanting nothing more than to get far away from the small knife.
System, scan it again! I refused to believe it to be a normal knife!
<Affirmative.>
<Scanning…>
…
<Royal Eating Knife>
Equipment Rank: –
Description: An intricately designed utensil made by polished steel mixed with purified gold, made to cut cooked meat, and fitting only in the most royal households.
…
Rex read the description and found no change to it.
Just like earlier, the System stated that the small knife was an ordinary eating knife.
It was nothing special.
Even when he scanned the surroundings to see if there was an entity nearby, he found none.
Or at least, none that seemed suspicious.
Despite almost always being composed whenever he faced something odd in the past, Rex was quite distraught by this. But he quickly regulated his breath, knowing that panicking wouldn’t help him solve this odd occurrence.
Once he recovered, he reassessed the situation.
System, if there’s something the scanning feature couldn’t pick up, what would it be?
I’m willing to pay whatever, as long as you answer this question.
<Notice: Anything regarding the System’s unlocked feature doesn’t cost any gold.>
<If the scanning feature fails to detect an anomaly that visibly exceeds normal parameters, it could be caused by one of the following reasons: The user is mistaken about the anomaly, interference from a higher being beyond the user’s comprehension—or the user is too late to scan resulting in the source of the phenomenon no longer being present.>
Rex read the notification attentively.
Since everyone saw what he saw, the first potential reason was certainly not true.
For the second potential reason, Rex found it unlikely too.
At this moment, he only has the attention of the Lunirich Gods, and perhaps a couple of other Gods that are equivalent. He didn’t feel like he did anything substantial enough to woe the attention of any other higher beings than them.
But he wasn’t quite sure since these higher beings might involve the Scions.
If there was a Scion sitting above the Lunirich Gods’ kind of Goodhood, then that’s a different case.
Regardless, the chances are low, as the only substantial thing he did was use the Invincible II item.
He was more inclined to the third potential reason.
Something must’ve moved the small knife, but left as soon as it did that, while Rex was in shock.
But who…? I don’t have any enemies in the Spirit Realm, unless the one who kidnapped Devo knew about me somehow. Then again, if this was really the hand of the person who kidnapped Devo, do I even have a chance of winning?
Doing something like this from miles and miles away in the sky would take immense focus.
And Rex couldn’t help but wonder if he even had a chance to rescue Devo.
Just then, Rex shook his head, snapping himself out of the rabbit hole of doubt.
Since the System issued a quest for me, I should have a good chance. Above everything, I can at least trust the System not to issue me a quest that is impossible to do. Now, I need to find out what this person wants from me.
Other than having the small knife flung at him, there was nothing.
If the person who did this wanted to kill him, then the knife would be thrown with more power.
But this? The throw was akin to a teen throwing a knife at him, it wasn’t that hard.
Is it to tell me something? A warning, maybe? But a warning for what?
No matter how much Rex thought about this, he couldn’t really guess from this occurrence alone.
He needed more information, so he decided to drop it for now.
Next time this happens, I’ll scan my surroundings instantly. Next time, I’ll catch you, whoever you are.
Rex’s eyes flickered with determination, eager to find whoever was messing with him.
…
Mortal Realm, the Scarlet Banes’ territory.
Inside a temporary hut, there was a Werewolf who was sitting on his chair of bones and animal hides.
It was Valkis, the Alpha of the Purple Light Pack.
He was staring ahead absent-mindedly, his face showing a flicker of awe.
On the table in front of him was a scroll, the report of today’s progress from his trusted Beta.
Based on the report, 7% of Princess Selene’s territory was taken over.
He and several forces of the Clarentium Empire have been invading Princess Selene’s territory for the last day. Considering the speech from the Silverstar Pack’s Luna, Valkis thought that this civil war would drag out for a long time.
Evelyn promised to pull the other Alpha Primes to her side without an all-out war.
And knowing how stubborn the Alpha Primes from the older generations were, this is going to be tough.
But Valkis was completely wrong.
Only a day passed, and Evelyn already showed results.
“Valkis!” A Werewolf clad in heavy armor stepped inside the hut and took a seat beside Valkis hurriedly. “I can’t believe this, the Dark Fang Pack has submitted to us! Just earlier, right in front of the city, their Alpha, Nadrona, swore allegiance to the Luna!”
“What?! Is that really true?”
“Yes, Fenrik was there to witness it. Nadrona got down on his knees in front of Evelyn and made a blood oath!”
“I-Impossible…”
Valkis’ eyes widened in shock.
He leaned back on his chair, taken aback by the news.
Nadrona came from the third generation of Werewolves, and he was one of the few who had the chance to fight alongside the direct descendants of the original princes and princesses. He is extremely powerful and also arrogant, due to his long, prosperous life of survival.
Some even said that he was born at the start of the Era of Might.
It was even said that he was one of the Werewolves who led the first charge at the Ancient Human.
Regardless of whether it was true or not, Nadrona was an incredibly powerful and prideful Werewolf.
Not to mention, the Blood Moon was nearing.
Any Werewolf would be twice as fierce as normal during this time, and as the Blood Moon approaches closer, their power and anger surge alongside each other. For Nadrona to bend his knees and make a blood oath to Evelyn, regardless of all that, should be impossible.
But this Werewolf wouldn’t lie about something like this, so it must be true.
“Just how did Lady Evelyn do this…?” Valkis muttered in awe.
Before they advanced into Princess Selene’s territory, Evelyn shared her plan with the crucial people.
She took out a map, complete with all cities that were under Princess Selene’s influence marked on it, as well as the governing Alpha Prime. Then, she separated the two cities into two categories. Blue and red, which was quite simple.
All cities that were placed in the blue category would be sieged only.
If the Alpha Prime of those cities wanted to parley, to discuss their position, they could.
As for the red category, the city would be instantly attacked.
Regardless of whether the governing Alpha Prime wanted to parley or not, the city needs to be attacked.
Once the city was flattened, then they could talk.
Valkis wasn’t entirely sure what determined whether a city was classified as Blue or Red, but the Blue cities were falling under Evelyn’s rule, at a much faster rate. As of now, four Blue-category cities had already pledged allegiance to her in a mere day.
And now, with Nadrona falling too, that number would rise to five.
‘Surely, Lady Evelyn must’ve done something. But what could she possibly do for even Nadrona to fall this easily?’ Valkis thought curiously. But other than awe for Evelyn’s capability, he also felt a chilling coldness about the situation.
In his eyes, Lady Evelyn wasn’t someone who could do things effectively.
Not because she was incapable of doing so, but because she has more empathy than the others.
But now, Valkis felt stupid as he should’ve known better than to underestimate the Luna.
Right underneath the Alpha, it wasn’t the Female Alpha who was the scariest.
It was the Luna.
A Luna always worked from the shadows, having another limb in the darkness that worked for her.
And from the looks of it, Evelyn’s shadow limb is extremely effective.
“Valkis,” Another Werewolf stepped inside the hut and called. “Lady Evelyn has returned, and you’ve been summoned.”
Upon hearing this, Valkis gulped before he stood up and left the hut.
Along the way towards the main hut, Valkis walked past the Werewolves guarding the area, and all of them were talking about the recent victories. In a day, the great army under Evelyn’s rule managed to beat three massive clashes against the opposing side.
Out of those three clashes, the one where Gistella led suffered the fewest casualties.
In fact, out of thousands, there were only ten reported deaths, which was an incredible result.
Naturally, the entire force was in high spirits.
As soon as Valkis neared the main hut, his eyes caught sight of Evelyn being escorted by a pair of Alpha Primes. Everyone who saw her passing immediately straightened their backs and bowed as a sign of respect, which showed that Evelyn had won their hearts.
“Lady Evelyn…” Valkis placed a hand on his chest and bowed.
“Alpha Prime Valkis, please, follow me inside,” Evelyn urged with a dulcet voice, and walked inside.
For a few seconds there, Valkis stopped in front of the hut, easing his nervousness before walking in.
“You call for me?”
“Yes, please…”
Evelyn motioned for Valkis to take his place across from her, on the other side of the battle map table.
Then, she pointed at a city that was marked with a red flag.
“Our scouts reported a gathering in Imla City, which would block our main forces’ advancement. From the looks of it, they are going to put up a fierce fight. Approximately, there will be eleven Alpha Primes there…”
“Eleven?! So many?”
Valkis was taken aback—this number of Alpha Primes gathering was quite a rare occurrence.
So, there must be a reason.
“Is there anything beyond Imla City?”
“You think exactly like me. Yes, there’s a narrow passage behind Imla City, that was located between two massive forests. Even from the outside, the chilling energy could already be felt. I’m sure there are a lot of Order Beasts in those forests.”
“Hmm, they are making a fortress there, which was why Imla City needed to stand longer.”
“Precisely…”
From this, Valkis understood the situation clearly.
If the fortress were completed, the opposing side’s power would exponentially increase.
Attacking the fortress head-on would mean immense casualties.
Going around it wouldn’t be easy either—two dense forests blocked the flanks, each teeming with Order Beasts, that could decimate their numbers. If Imla City held out long enough, their forces would be forced to choose between two costly options.
And that would be a losing situation either way.
So, it was clear what they needed to do.
“Do you want me to lead the attack?” Valkis asked decisively.
“No,” Evelyn put on a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “I want you to siege it instead.”
