Rayne poured Sam a large handful. He didn’t even wait for her to take a step back before placing the first piece into his mouth.

He chose a piece of chocolate first and waited for it to fully melt in his mouth before picking up the next piece.

Rayne smiled and turned to look at the others, “Would anyone else like a handful of trail mix?”

Everyone in the room immediately nodded their head. Some people even stood up and approached her.

“I do!”

“No, give it to me first!”

“I was here first, move!”

The bag of trail mix caused a lot of commotion, flustering Rayne.

Julian noticed this and walked over, “There’s enough for everyone. Please don’t fight! We’ll walk over to everyone!”

His loud voice quieted everyone down. Rayne pretended to pull out another bag of trail mix from her backpack and handed it to Julian to help pass out.

While they treated everyone, they took the opportunity to introduce themselves. Most of the people brushed them off, only caring about receiving the food, but a few greeted them back and even thanked them for the treat.

Once Rayne and Julian finished passing out the trail mix, they walked over to Sam and another friendly woman nearby.

“Is it good?” asked Rayne with a smile.

Sam looked a lot more cheerful after eating and nodded his head a few times. Rayne wanted to ask him if his parents were around, but felt that it was too personal a question.

She looked around the room, watching everyone quietly eating the trail mix.

Hopefully, they’ll be more open to chatting after they’ve finished eating.

Just as she was about to start a conversation with the nearby woman, she heard gunshots in the distance.

Julian quickly stood up, standing in front of Rayne. He looked out of the window to try to make out what was going on outside.

The doors to the police station flung open, “There’s an attack! Everyone hide! There are so many of them! They all have weapons!”

A man ran around, frantically warning everyone inside of what was happening.

Edith finally showed up with a troubled expression, “Where are they coming from? What is their goal?”

The frantic man dropped to the ground in front of her, “We couldn’t see too much due to the darkness, but there were many cars. They’ve smashed all of the windows and doors of the stores in the shopping plaza!”

Edith looked around, noticing everyone’s frightened gaze locked onto her.

“Hopefully, they’ll loot what they want and leave. Everyone, stay quiet and don’t make any unnecessary movements!”

After her order went out, the police station turned eerily quiet. The atmosphere inside was suffocating as everyone held their breath.

One of the older women who was sitting in the lobby with Rayne began clutching at her chest. Her eyes watered as she tried to hold back her panic.

Rayne carefully walked over and handed the woman a water bottle from her backpack.

“It’ll be okay, just try to take deep breaths,” she whispered.

The elderly woman nodded and began to take long, deep breaths following Rayne’s advice. After a few minutes, she was able to calm herself enough to where she was no longer clutching her chest.

“Thank you,” she whispered and accepted the water bottle.

After calming the woman down, Rayne walked back over to Julian and gave him a knowing look. It seems that Damien’s men arrived quicker than they anticipated.

A few hours went by, and it was now fully dark outside. Nobody moved from their spot per Edith’s order, waiting for the morning to come.

Unfortunately for them, a group of eight cars pulled up straight to the police station.

“Well, hello! Quite rude of you to not invite us over earlier,” the leader of this group walked over with a megaphone in his hand.

Everyone inside the police station held their breath, wondering how these people knew they were here.

The next moment, another man came over, dragging a younger man with him.

“If it weren’t for our friend here, we would have completely missed out on meeting you wonderful people!” said the man with the megaphone.

While Rayne didn’t recognize the captive man, judging by the expression of everyone else in the room, he was clearly someone they all knew.

After a few minutes of silence, Edith finally walked out of the police station to meet with the visitors.

“What do you want?” she asked unhappily.

From the earlier report, she knew they had already looted all of the stores in the nearby area. There wasn’t much inside of the police station for them to take.

The leader lowered his megaphone and smiled.

“Well, this isn’t the warm welcome I was hoping to receive. Don’t you know it’s rude to treat a guest this way?”

“You’ve already looted the nearby stores. We have nothing left,” said Edith, ignoring his provocations.

All she wanted was to get these people to leave as soon as possible, but the leader had other plans.

“Oh, but you do have something that we want,” he smiled evilly.

Edith frowned, “What is it? We’ll hand it over.”

The leader let out a big laugh and turned to look at his men behind him, “Did you guys hear that? These people are so nice, they’re willing to hand us what we want!”

Everyone behind him burst into laughter, cheering and whistling.

Edith looked around, trying to figure out what it was they wanted, but the answer presented itself the next moment.

“Perfect, then please load yourselves into the cars, and we’ll be on our way!” the leader smiled, motioning to the cars behind him.

“What?” Edith froze. Her eyes widened from shock as she tried to process his request.

The leader pretended to frown, “What, don’t tell me you’ll go back on your word. That’s not very nice.”

He lifted the megaphone once more and spoke to the building. “Listen up. You have five minutes to get yourselves out here before it’s too late!”

“C’mon, you first, ma’am. Maybe the others will follow by example,” he said while signaling his subordinate to restrain her.

Inside, Rayne looked at Julian.

“What should we do?” she asked, looking around at everyone’s frozen faces.
