The next morning, Rayne woke up to the sounds of early birds chirping in the valley below them. Her body was both sore and relaxed.

“Good morning, beautiful”, Julian walked over with a cup of coffee, handing it to her. “Sleep well?”

Rayne accepted the coffee with a smile before turning to look at him. “How come you always have such a hard time waking up early, but the night we stay up having nonstop sex, you’re up and energized?”

Julian flashed a cheeky grin, “I’ve never felt so alive. I feel like I can single-handedly take on an entire army.”

Rayne laughed, shaking her head. She would never understand how men worked, but that was okay.

She took out a number of breakfast dishes, making an entire spread of delicious food appear on the blanket in front of her.

“Well, this is special”, said Julian as he sat down beside her.

“Of course it’s special!” she said, flashing her diamond ring in front of him. It sparkled brilliantly in the sun, making her gasp at its beauty.

“I really don’t know where you found something so beautiful”, she said as she moved her hand around in the sun to make it sparkle even more.

Julian watched her with a big smile, “It was actually my last purchase right before I faked my death. I bought it on a whim at the auction house the night ‘I got shot’, who knew it was fate.”

Rayne nodded, “Yes, fate indeed.”

After breakfast, they both took their time cleaning up and showering before making their way back to the car.

The walk back was even more wonderful than it was on the way there. Although the sun was out and shining brightly, the constant breeze made the warm weather rather enjoyable.

Since they didn’t stop to go fishing again, it only took them a few hours to make it back to the car.

The ride home was quiet but pleasant. Rayne played music from her cellphone, allowing them to sing along happily.

The base was buzzing with life. Everyone was enjoying the nice breeze outside, chatting and enjoying outdoor activities like volleyball and badminton.

Seeing so many smiling faces made Rayne feel even happier. She was so grateful that she had such a warm atmosphere to come home to.

“Rayne! You’re finally back!” Ella came over to the car.

“Hey, yes, we’re back!” beamed Rayne. She wanted to show Ella her ring, but Ella’s sharp eye noticed it almost immediately.

“OH. MY. GOD! Rayne, did he propose?!”, squealed Ella.

Julian walked over to Rayne’s side. “I did, and I am happy to announce that she said yes.”

Ella was so excited that she was jumping up and down while holding Rayne’s hand. Her enthusiastic motions caused Noah to walk over, curious about what all of the commotion was about.

When he saw the ring on Rayne’s finger, he looked at his friend with surprise.

“Congrats, man! This is really amazing. You finally found your special someone”, congratulated Noah, patting Julian on the shoulder.

Word spread like wildfire throughout the settlement, and everywhere Rayne and Julian went, they were met with heartfelt congratulations.

As much as Rayne wanted to sit around and enjoy her time, she knew that if they didn’t try to stop Damien, it would be too late to fight him later.

She walked over to Ian’s house, where the other core members of Alpha Team were.

“Have there been any new movements in the city?” asked Julian.

“Yes, sir. More and more groups of men have gone out to raid and take people. We estimate that most of the small settlements in the city have already been wiped out”, reported an Alpha Team scout.

Julian nodded, clenching his fists.

“Do you have any ideas as to where they will be hitting next?” asked Rayne.

She knew that the plan was for her and Julian to get ‘captured’ in order to infiltrate Damien’s base and take it out from the inside.

“Based on their movements, we can predict that the next area they will hit will be the southern suburbs. They’re working their way down there now”, the scout replied.

Rayne looked down at Julian, meeting his eyes. They communicated wordlessly, agreeing to set off to the southern suburbs.

Ian noticed the silent communication between them and stood up, “Boss, you don’t plan on–“

“Exactly that, Ian. It’s the best way,” said Julian, cutting him off.

“Then at least let us come with you!” said Ian.

Julian shook his head, “No, with every extra person we risk exposing ourselves. Plus, I need you here to take care of the settlement. This place may be one of the last places where people can live, not just survive. We need to protect it at all costs.”

Ian stood up wanting to argue back, but was met with Julian’s resolute eyes. After a momentary silence, he nodded, “Very well, I’ll protect this place with my life”.

“Thank you, Ian,” said Julian.

The rest of the conversation pivoted to what supplies were needed and the availability of weapons and ammo in the settlement.

“How about holding some classes to teach the residents how to use a gun?” suggested Rayne.

She wasn’t sure how long this mission would last and felt that the more people who knew how to defend themselves, the better.

“I think this is a good idea. We can pick and choose those who have aptitude first,” suggested Noah.

Everyone else seemed to be in favor of this idea.

“They’ve been here long enough to where we can trust them. It’s easy to see how everyone here really cares for the settlement,” chimed in Ian.

Julian nodded, “Then I’ll ensure that we have enough guns and ammo in stock before Rayne and I set off.”

The room went silent. Noah and Ian looked at Julian with a complicated expression. They were worried about their friend who would be walking right into the lion’s den.

Julian smiled, feeling warm at his friends’ concern for him.

“Don’t worry. We’ll be back with good news.”
