Chapter 1581: Pretending Not to Know

It was evident that he intended to summon Zheng Sangge for a meaningful conversation, possibly discussing the prospect of offering him an official position.

A fleeting expression of displeasure crossed General Sun’s eyes. He was on the verge of expressing his thoughts when Zheng Sangge, in a gesture of gratitude, bowed to Shao Yunduan with cupped fists. “Thank you, Lord Shao! Apologies for the trouble!”

“General Zheng, your courtesy is much appreciated!”

“I’m no longer a general. Lord Shao, if it’s agreeable to you, you can address me as Brother Zheng.”

“Very well, Brother Zheng!”

Shao Yunduan nodded with a warm smile.

General Sun felt a profound sense of distaste. He forced a smile and remarked, “Little Zheng, you’re going too far. How have you managed all these years? Why didn’t you seek me out when you were facing difficulties? No need for such formality between us! I always assumed you had returned to your hometown. This comes as a surprise!”

Zheng Sangge almost wanted to burst into laughter. Living in the northern city slums with many others, all of them with known identities—how could General Sun not be aware? It seemed like he was pretending not to know.

He disliked officialdom and was inept at ingratiating himself with others. He couldn’t tolerate such people and circumstances. After all these years, what remained? How could General Sun still remember?

Though the words sounded amiable, if he truly went to seek General Sun out, he would probably have been irritated long ago, right?

Having weathered the hardships of the world, Zheng Sangge was no longer the person he used to be. Despite his internal disdain, he concealed it well and respectfully replied to General Sun, “I’m ashamed. I’ve been drifting aimlessly all these years, and I don’t have the face to seek you out, General.”

General Sun laughed and affectionately patted his shoulder. “You’re too modest! Let’s not dwell on it tonight. Remember to visit my residence tomorrow.”

“Yes, General!”

General Sun had initially anticipated a refusal, or at least some hesitation before acceptance. To his surprise, Zheng Sangge agreed readily, leaving him slightly stunned.

Chuckling, General Sun departed, offering a reminder, “Oh, don’t forget!”

“Of course not,” Zheng Sangge replied.

Mockery brewed within Zheng Sangge’s heart.

In the blink of an eye, the Heavenly Mansion was empty, with only Zheng Sangge, Shao Yunduan, and Qiao Xuan remaining.

Zheng Sangge expressed his gratitude to Qiao Xuan, bowing with cupped fists. “Thank you, Madam Shao!”

Wu Guan and Liu Changming also hastened to bow and express their thanks. “Thank you so much, Madam Shao! Without your assistance today, these children…”

“Sigh!” Liu Fu added.

Zheng Sangge sighed and called the children forward to thank Qiao Xuan.

Taking Qing Lian and Qiaoqiao by their hands, Qiao Xuan directed Liu Fu to follow. She smiled and said, “Don’t be so modest, Brother Zheng. You’re too kind! I’m just doing what needs to be done.”

After a brief pause, she added with a half-joking smile, “Actually, I’m relying on my husband’s fearlessness. Some may find it challenging to lend a hand, but no one dares to refuse.”

Zheng Sangge chuckled. “Regardless, we owe a debt of gratitude to Madam Shao and Lord Shao.”

Shao Yunduan suggested, “Let’s head to our house first. It’s nearby. You can freshen up, have a meal, and I’ll arrange for your return later.”

After a moment’s thought, Zheng Sangge nodded with a smile. “Thank you, Lord Shao and Madam Shao!”

Qiao Xuan excitedly chimed in, “Absolutely, you’re most welcome!”
