“I was wrong…”
‘What do you mean!’
“Go on without me, boss.”
Lilah collapsed, clutching her completely empty stomach.
I wept miserably on top of her.
‘To think we’d be so unlucky…’
A named monster and an essentially named snake.
Facing starvation in this forest.
Only Pelerian, who was already dead and couldn’t starve, remained calm.
“This isn’t bad luck…”
‘It’s not?’
“You guys are just stu…”
‘Stu?’
“Never mind, forget it…”
I don’t know what he means, but.
I can’t let Lilah starve to death.
I crawled on the ground and caught a few field mice.
And fed them to Lilah.
“Tastes bad…”
“Shocking!”
You’ll die if you don’t eat!
This is why monsters shouldn’t get too accustomed to living with humans.
Once you adapt from eating whatever you can find to tasty cooked food, it’s hard to go back.
It’s incredibly admirable that I haven’t lost my original mindset.
Still, Lilah barely regained her strength.
After drinking a lot of water from a not-so-clean puddle.
“Filled with water.”
Then she walked unsteadily.
Thankfully, we found a path.
It was a well-maintained road where carriages could pass.
‘Lilah! We’re saved!’
“Road, rooooad.”
The existence of a road means there’s a connected city.
If we just enter there, we can buy food with the money we have.
“Should I take off my armor?”
‘Hmm…’
Even the strong Lilah began to find her armor heavy.
Just as I was about to tell her to do so.
‘Carriage, a carriage is coming!’
“Oh, uhoo!”
I quickly had her assume a hitchhiking pose.
You know, with the thumb up.
“Please give us a ride!”
Lilah shouted, and I wagged my tail enthusiastically, but.
Clop clop clop clop-
The two-horse carriage didn’t slow down at all.
As I was contemplating forcibly stopping it, the carriage passed us by.
“Shocking!”
“Ugh…”
What a harsh world this is.
Even if times are rough, to ignore hitchhikers who are starving to death.
Of course, Lilah looked like a large warrior in full armor, but there’s no gorilla as kind as her in this world.
We walked along the road, cursing the carriage that had just passed.
‘I hope you speed and flip over.’
Was it heaven answering our petty curse?
Not long after, we could meet that carriage again.
It was a more awkward situation than a traffic accident from speeding.
A broken tree was blocking the road.
In front of it, men with shabby appearances were pointing spears.
The horses snorted steam from their nostrils, and the men spat as they shouted.
“Get out of the carriage, you bastards!”
“Not getting out?”
That’s right.
If you set out on a mountain road and don’t meet bandits, you’d be disappointed.
But the coachman seemed to have quite a backbone.
“You bastards, do you know who’s riding in this carriage!”
He was a young man, but he didn’t back down even though there were more than five bandits.
“W-who’s riding?”
“…Kugh.”
But he actually can’t say.
After hesitating for a moment, he shouted angrily.
“I am a knight! If you don’t retreat immediately, I’ll slaughter you all.”
For a proper knight, handling such bandits would be easy as pie.
But the bandits burst into laughter.
“A knight, he says. If you’re a knight, then I’m the Sword Saint, you coachman bastard.”
“Tall tale. Bwahaha!”
The coachman’s face turned bright red.
Without armor or even a sword, he didn’t look like a knight.
“How dare you lowly scum…!”
The coachman swung his whip threateningly.
The bandits slowly spread out holding their spears.
As we watched in hiding, Lilah whispered to me.
“What should we do, boss?”
‘…I’ve got a good idea.’
An idea struck like lightning.
‘First, let’s go around to the back!’
Circling around the bandits and the carriage, we went forward.
It seemed that neither the coachman nor the bandits had much practical experience.
“Damn it, don’t stab the horse!”
“Be careful with the horse! Do you know how much it costs!”
The coachman’s whip wasn’t very threatening, but the bandits worried about hurting the expensive horses.
But how could they subdue the rearing horses without hurting them?
In that confusion, we could approach through the bandits.
‘Now what do we do?’
‘Let’s blend in naturally with the bandits and steal that carriage.’
That was my idea.
A two-horse carriage should be enough for Lilah and me to ride.
As we were about to attack the carriage, helping our comrades (the bandits).
“Aaaaah!”
One of the bandits next to us let out a shrill scream.
“It’s a monster!”
No, monster?
For a moment, I felt Lilah’s hurt feelings through our connection.
“W-what is that!”
“Why is it so big!”
One bandit thrust his spear.
It was a crude spear, just a blade tied to the end of a wooden stick.
Such a thing couldn’t possibly pierce Lilah’s armor.
Crack!
The spear snapped right off.
“Stop it.”
Lilah said so, but the bandits became more excited.
“Surround it, stab its flank!”
“Kill it!”
Oh dear.
The plan to infiltrate among the bandits had failed.
‘Lilah.’
“Mmm.”
By the way, Lilah has no weapon.
Her solid prosthetic arm and the gauntlet covering it were weapons themselves.
‘Let’s take them out.’
‘Alright.’
She brought her fist down directly on one man’s crown.
Crunch!
Surprisingly, his head was buried between his shoulders.
Boom!
Leaving the instantly killed bandit, Lilah caught a spear flying at her.
And swinging it like a club.
Bang!
As the spear shaft exploded into fragments, the hit bandit flew away.
Having dealt with two, three remained.
But the three instantly lost their will to fight and began to flee.
“Aaaaah!”
Bandits screaming as they ran away.
Lilah grabbed the log they had felled to block the carriage.
And about to throw it.
“Eh.”
She just rolled it down the slope.
What a merciful one.
And our exploits must have been quite impressive.
The coachman who had been swinging his whip hurriedly expressed his gratitude.
“Th-thank you. It was a very troublesome situation…”
“…”
Lilah was careful with her words.
Wasn’t she wearing armor to hide that she’s a monster?
I did think she showed too much supernatural strength.
“That was remarkable prowess. Are you perhaps a knight?”
It’s not a strength that a knight could display.
The coachman seemed to be mistaken.
“May I ask your name…”
“Lilah…”
I thumped the back of Lilah’s head.
“…us.”
“Pardon?”
“Lilahaus…”
Enter the wandering knight Lilahaus.
