Chapter 1760: At the Capital

The coalition was not welcomed in the capital, but they arrived there anyway. Hundreds of people gathered upon their arrival, ready to reject the army, but the sheer number of them made it so no one could do anything.

A few people still tried, but the overwhelming might of the army that came with the coalition killed them as soon as they even so much as spoke a single word in protest. Their corpses were hung by large spears, held by the undeads as they all walked deeper into the capital.

Nearly 20 thousand people with over 2 thousand horses and a hundred different carriages were dragged into the city with absolutely no fanfare. The only fanfare there was from the soldiers that came with the army itself.

The soldiers sang loudly, chanting the names of the three that had come there.

Jema Tayla-Gronn

Trenaut Ron-Golhlog

Oleander Wes-Gauss

The three candidates from the 3 groups of the coalition that were in talks of who would get to sit on the Onyx Throne. The decision would soon be made.

As they got in deeper, they were able to see the nature of the city. The people here had been hit hard by the years of war. Empty city streets, decrepit houses, homeless people with skin barely hanging on their bones.

Through these people, the 3 groups of armies made their way inside the city, scaring anyone who dared to act out against them, and finally arrived at the heart of the capital, a large city center with no people or stalls around.

This was the meeting point of 4 massive highways, with one of the corners leading into the old palace, that had long since been repurposed as the House of Council, where the council members who governed the Dragon Republic met every day.

There were supposed to be 61 council members, and they tried to elect a new one whenever they could, but because of the war, the changes couldn’t be made fast enough. And some of the council members were generals in the army as well, so they were either away or dead by now.

Only 20 council members were there that day, and they had gathered outside of the House of Councils, with a few dozen soldiers around them, standing before the 20 thousand strong army members.

“Hear us, people of the Onyx Empire,” someone from the army screamed in the moment for everyone to hear. “Your people have lost the war, and so now the empire shall be born again. If you dare to stand against us, then do so. We dare to kill anyone who does.”

The council members’ faces darkened, but there was nothing they could do just then. All they were capable of doing was waiting and watching.

“No need to scare them,” a man said as he moved forward on his horse, wearing an intricate deep-blue helmet, along with spotless armor, holding a hand to the hilt of his sword on his waist.

Several soldiers walked out with him, quickly setting up a perimeter to protect the man.

The council members looked at him, one of the older ones among them daring to speak. “You must be the prince,” he said. “Do not think you will find respect among us.”

The man smiled a little under the helmet. “That is of no concern to me. You will soon learn to respect me when I become the next Emperor,” the prince declared.

“Getting ahead of yourself there, Your Highness,” another voice said as a woman walked up on her horse, a red whip looped on her right hip. “You do not know what the future holds. I could be the Empress.”

Another horse walked up front just then, carrying a strong brown-haired man. “We have neglected to talk about it until now, so let’s do so. How are we going to decide who is going to be the next Emperor?”

The other two turned their heads to look at him.

“Of course, we will have our people vote and decide who they want to see on the throne,” the prince said. “That is the fairest of all.”

“Fair?” the other man asked. “The people of Marsh have given their most in your father’s conquest and have lost the most. A vote of the people means I will be the one to lose when my people have given their most to make this happen. I will not accept this.”

The prince frowned. “Then what do you wish to do? Do you want us to fight each other to decide who wins and takes the throne? You know you can never defeat me.”

The man frowned.

“You know,” the woman spoke up. “I like the idea of voting to choose the next Emperor.”

The prince smiled. “Glad you’re on my side for this.”

“I just said—” the other man was about to burst out when the woman put up her hand to make him stop.

“I said I like the idea of voting. I did not say who it would be that would be voting.”

The prince’s smile disappeared. “What are you saying?”

The woman turned toward the council members. “If I am correct, you decide who gets to become a member of the council through speeches and debates, do you not?” she asked.

The councilmen didn’t know where she was going with it, but they nodded nonetheless.

“Then we shall do exactly that. All three of us shall give our speeches and debate before the people of this city. We will let them know of all the changes we will bring and let them decide who they wish to make their new Emperor.”

“Since they are the ones who will have to deal with one of us, let them be the ones who decide.”

The other man thought for a moment and nodded. “I agree with that. It is the most fair suggestion I have heard.”

The prince glared at the two and gave up in the end. “Fine, if that is what you wish to do. Let us rest for today. Tomorrow, we shall decide who becomes the Emperor of the Onyx Empire.”
