Reincarnated as an Energy with a System

Chapter 1745 1745: Inside the Entrance

“You can sense where the air is?” Ning asked.

“Well, more exactly I can sense the difference in air quality around me. So technically, yes, I can sense where the air is. That’s kinda the prerequisite for my power, I suppose.”

Ning paused for a long moment. “You could use that power this whole time?” he asked.

“For the past 3 days, yes. I only release my power and try to get another one when we’re not on the road. I don’t want my soldiers to be weak while on the journey.”

“Bastard!” Ning couldn’t help but curse. “We’ve been searching for a hidden entrance for half an hour. You could’ve helped us this whole time.”

Romus was taken aback. “What are you cursing me for? I was looking out for the bandits,” he said.

Ning sighed. “Fine, fine. I won’t curse. Just help us already.”

“Okay,” Romus said.

Ning called everyone around, explaining to them Romus’s powers. They cursed him a bit as well before they got to searching. After not even 10 minutes of walking around the base of the hill, they found the entrance.

It looked no different from anything else on the outside, sturdy enough that it didn’t even give a feeling of hollowness when walking over it.

But Romus could sense the air quality of the air inside the ground, which was a dead giveaway of it being the entrance.

“It’s a thick wall,” Romus said. “And holy shit, the quality of the air inside is horrendous. I cannot imagine anyone able to live down there. Are you sure we are at the right place?”

Ning began frowning too. “How bad is it?” he asked.

“Bad enough that if you stay in there for a few hours, you will most likely die from being unable to breathe,” he said. “I don’t know how to describe it. Like being around a fire, but not exactly smoky.”

Ning nodded.

“How could these people have entered through here?” Matthew asked. “It doesn’t make sense.”

“Maybe they have powers,” Shara said. “Like me, they can go through things. Should I do the same?”

“No,” Ning said. “We need to air out the place first. We need to open the gate itself.”

“How are we going to do that? Start digging?” Romus asked.

“No,” Ning said, brandishing his red and black spear. “I have a better way. Move away from here.”

On his word, they all stepped a few steps back, letting him ample space to do what he was going to do.

Ning began moving his spear around, slowly gathering momentum with each spin. Because of how one of the minor attributes of the spear worked, the momentum kept adding up, adding weight to his spear, making it stronger and stronger.

A few of the people knew by now that the spear was special and had even used it from time to time, so they waited for Ning to give it enough time. Then, after what felt like ages, Ning finally did something other than spin it around.

He slammed it down on the ground where Romus had pointed, landing the flattest side of the spear onto it.

The explosive force with which he slammed his spear onto the ground let out a massive burst of dirt and stone into the air, spraying all around.

Ning turned into steel at the same time to protect himself and Shara protected the others, turning them all intangible. At the same time, the wind rushed out of the opening as well, sending out some rather foul smell.

Ning was forced to hold his breathing and move to the side so he didn’t immediately vomit all over. He couldn’t stand how bad it smelled in there.

The fort made some sounds like rocks collapsing, but none that caught their attention enough to be of importance. They moved away for a while, letting the terrible smell air out a little.

Once the dust settled, they put on some damp rags around their mouth and nose and made their way toward the giant opening Ning had created. The hole was seemingly packed nearly 3 meters deep, and there was only a small hole for now through where the air was coming from.

“Should we go inside and see what is happening?” Matthew asked. “Because I’m struggling to believe any human could’ve survived in that stench.”

“They definitely are,” Ning said. He could tell the difference between a person and an animal through his Life Sense after all. He thought about what to do for a while and sighed.

“Get the lanterns, we will enter,” he said. “I hope your healing can heal diseases too.”

“It can,” Mari answered.

“Good, because we will definitely need it.”

A few minutes later, there were 3 lanterns with them. One held by Ning, one by Romus, and one by Matthew.

Shara took Ning’s hand on one side and Matthew’s hand on the other side. Matthew held Romus next to him and also held onto the lantern as well as the two spears. His 4 arms did double the work.

The stench was unbearable, but they forced their way in. The climb, which Ning believed had to be upward due to where the fortress was located, was instead downward.

It didn’t make sense to him because he had sensed the people upward. He began to believe that he might have come across another dungeon entirely. After all, this could not house humans at all.

However, he sensed humans ahead of them after a while, realizing they were there. “They’re here,” he said, sensing a few of them.

They continued moving and as they did, Ning’s senses saw more and more people. First just a few, then a dozen, and then a few dozen.

As the numbers grew, his eyes went wider and wider, the numbers inconceivable to him.

Then, they arrived in front of the first few people he had seen.

They were people in large corroding armor, with leather that had rotted away as well. There were skeletons around them, just a few, but ones that had died a long, long time ago.

And yet, these people were seemingly fine, not a single wound on their body. They were, however, completely still, not moving, not breathing. They were no different than corpses, but corpses couldn’t have survived in such a place for this long.

These people looked, for the lack of a better word, fresh.

“Are they in a coma?” Shara asked. “Or are they dead?”

“Neither,” Romus said. “Or both.”

“Both?” Shara asked. “What do you mean?”

She had turned to look at him and was confused to see the look of shock on his face. He wasn’t the only one who was shocked, Matthew was too. She turned to Ning and he was the most shocked of them all.

“What is going on? Someone tell me,” Shara said, her words demanding.

“Those are undead,” Romus said. “Ones that were raised by a necromancer. Only, their master is dead, so they don’t move like normal undead do.”

Matthew’s hands shook a little. “Could it really be?” he asked.

“I don’t know,” Romus said.

“That is just the start,” Ning said. There are thousands beyond those few, all in the same state.”

He turned to look at the three. “I believe we’ve found the Emperor’s lost legion.”
