Re: Blood and Iron

Chapter 344: Kneel Before the Crown

The British parliament was in an uproar it had not seen since the American colonies had successfully defeated their colonial forces via a combination of asymmetric and regular warfare. At the time, one of the larger grievances had been the "uncivilized manner with which the colonialists conducted warfare."

Much was the same sentiment that repeated itself currently as a particularly heavyset parliamentary member cursed the Germans for the way they waged war, his jowls practically flapping in perfect tandem with his double chin as he did so.

"It is absolutely reprehensible the way these damned barbarians wage war against our soldiers? Chemical weapons, bombing campaigns from the sky and ambushes on our non-combatants? We cannot let such acts of uncivilized behavior be permitted to go unpunished!"

This was a sentiment many among the more hawkish members of Parliament had regarding the German Army, the German Reich, and the German nation as a whole. They had gotten molly walloped so badly over the course of the last two years that they simply could not admit that they were defeated by a superior foe.

No, it was the uncivilized way in which the Germans conducted warfare! That was how they had so thoroughly trounced the indomitable might of the British Empire! However, the Hawks were starting to become a minority in British politics as the Empire burned in the background.

And hostility between the various parties and ideologies was at the highest extent imaginable. So much so that one of the opposition was quick to throw his mug of water at the overweight parliamentary member who had suggested continuing the war.

The mug struck the man’s head and cut him across the forehead while its contents spilled all over the intended target. Immediately upon hurling the object, the man who had thrown it yelled at the man he struck.

"If you’re so damned insistent on sending our sons to die in this war, why the bloody hell don’t you yourself volunteer first!"

This act of violence in the halls of parliament sparked a full scale riot as all sides began throwing things at one another, and engaging in fisticuffs in the middle of the building. All the while the men at the top of the hierarchy face palmed, and wiped their eyes in exhaustion.

Three times, three times in the last 72 hours the British parliament had erupted in violence as those on both sides of how Great Britain should proceed with the war effort could not come to a single concession.

One side wanted to withdraw and leave the French hanging dry immediately, while spending their remaining military power to stabilize their own homeland and colonies. All the while the other side wanted to make the Germans pay for killing over a million of their young men.

British casualties in this war were far higher than in Bruno’s past life, nearing three million in total that were KIA, WIA, or MIA. And the French were even worse.

The Italians who hugged their own borders and were quite reserved in their assaults, so much so that their Anglo-French allies often criticized them for not taking the war seriously, had suffered the least amount of casualties of any major power.

That being less than 500,000 KIA, WIA, and MIA combined. And now they had raised the white flag and surrendered. Which meant exactly what the British feared most… The Wolf of Prussia, and his 8th Army would be marching on France soon… Very soon…

The time to get out of the war before the final battle began was a very limited window, and with each passing second that they could not agree upon a solution that window was rapidly closing. And now, despite all of this, the parliament of the British Empire behaved like a pack of rabid jackals, trying to tear each other’s throats out.

As a result, there were attempts to restore order as shouts were made to cease their hostilities at once.

"Order! Order! I will have an order!"

The violence, however, continued until that is, the great doors of the hall of parliament opened to reveal the regal form of King George V who stepped forward with a haughty gait in his step.

The man was dressed in full regalia, something that was far more ceremonial even in this day and age than anything else and was surely enough to capture the attention of all those present.

Even those who were holding their peers by the scruff of their neck, and their fists raised quickly released their grips and tried to make themselves respectable for the King who walked down the halls of Parliament for the first time in recent memory.

And then as the sound of King George’s steps suddenly came to a stop, and he stood at the podium he made a shocking announcement to the British Parliament and by extension the British Empire at large.

"Empowered by ancient decree, I King George, fifth of my name use my royal prerogative to dissolve the parliament here at once! Since none of you can come to an agreement on how this critical matter shall be settled, I, King of Britain, and bestowed the divine right to rule by God himself, shall settle this matter.

You may all go home now and rethink your lives, and perhaps as you do so, you will reflect on how you have all lost the faith and will of the people."

After saying this, King George left the hall without saying another word, leaving the members of parliament confused, as there were many among them who did not understand this was a right of the British Monarch that he held with constitutional authority. And his will would be done regardless of what these petty thieves who called themselves representatives of the people thought about it.

It was time for the British people to kneel before the crown, and let the monarchs settle his dispute paid in full with British and German blood once and for all. A sentiment that if Bruno saw perhaps would have brought a tear to his eyes as he had so very much wished to see a similar scene play out within his past life. Find your next read at
