-> Lima v/s Emilia
Alex found it difficult to watch this fight without a tired expression.
He didn't think either of these two would have a chance to win this tournament with such weak Pokémon.
Although he managed to win a tournament even though he was not in the top 3, it was due to his talent and luck.
Even Alex doesn't think he can win this tournament if he took part in it. He could probably reach 3rd place with such strong trainers like Steven and Wallace. And that is if his luck is good and he doesn't meet them till the semifinals.
Alex even had the feeling that this year's rookie tournament could be the strongest rookie tournament for all participants.
2 future champions and 1 future Gym leader taking part in the same tournament is really ridiculous. Of course, the participants don't know that, and it doesn't seem as abnormal to everyone else as it does to Alex.
Alex, in thought, woke up and saw how the battle of Lima v/s Emilia was over with Lima as the victor.
Although he didn't see this fight, it wasn't surprising that the person with the higher number won.
Alex read a statistic that showed that 80% of Number 1 participants win in rookie tournaments. Number 2 has about a 15% chance of winning, and number 3 has a win rate of about 4.9%. (Not precisely 4.9%, but a little more. Only Alex wins the rookie tournament with a number lower than 3, which created this anomaly.)
Funnily enough, thanks to Alex victorious in a rookie tournament, the win rate for the number 5 participant is not 0% anymore. But the win rate for participant 4 is exact 0%.
Since the victory of Alex, the people even started considering the possibility of participants than the top 3 winning the tournament.
-> Wallace v/s Peter.
This fight was even more boring than the last fight.
3 Elite Pokémon against 3 non-Elite Pokémon is really a one-sided fight.
Alex knows from experience that it is impossible to win an Elite Pokémon in a 'fair' fight.
For example, he could only defeat Misty's Elite Pokémon because he got Misty distracted. And Scizor successfully used that chance to buff himself several times without any worry, which made the fight very balanced. Not to mention, Scizor had the type advantage against Starmie, a Water and Psychic-type Pokémon.
Alex's higher tactics proficiency was also a critical factor that gave him a slight advantage in the fight.
Also, Scizor was using effective moves, while Misty's Elite Pokémon only had not-effective moves at the Expert rank.
A Pokémon that cannot use its Expert Rank Move effectively is weakened by half. And despite all the disadvantages, Alex only managed to stretch that fight to a draw.
Without surprise, Peter was utterly defeated and even failed to damage 1 of Wallace's Pokémon properly.
The one thing that was special about the fight was the appearance of Wallace in the arena.
He wore clothes that showed almost as much skin as a male stripper and moved very seductively.
To Alex, it looked very gay, but when he saw how several female viewers had placards with Wallace's faces and red hearts, his eyes twitched in bewilderment.
It looked like 80% of all female viewers are at least Wallace's fans, and every one of them was watching his movement with eyes, some even with a drooling mouth.
There were even a few excited female spectators who wanted to run to the arena to touch Wallace.
Fortunately, the whole arena was surrounded by a shield to protect the audience from the moves of the fighting Pokémon. Though it looked as if the shield was for protecting Wallace from his crazy female fans.
"Is this a joke? Why is he so popular? He doesn't even look any better than Steven, and he also moves like he's a she. The Pokémon world is really bizarre."
"I don't know whether to be happy or sad that I don't have such crazy female fans."
"Hmm, I think this is only fun for a few days before it starts getting annoying. Though there are bound to be people who enjoy this."
-> Flannery v/s Levi.
It was another fight without any real tension.
2 Elite and 1 non-Elite Pokémon against 3 non-Elite Pokémon is like 2 adults and 1 kid fighting against 3 kids.
Flannery had a very similar strength to Misty in Alex's tournament. You could say that she was even slightly stronger because she had 2 Elite Pokémon in contrast to Misty.
They even appear to be about the same age as Misty right now. (she is a little younger.)
Flannery easily won the fight, and Alex moved his focus to the next matchup fights.
--- Steven v/s Lima ---
-------------> Final: ??? v/s ???
--- Wallace v/s Flannery ---
You can really say that the rest of the battles really involve the top Elites of the region.
Only Lima is unknown to Alex.
Nonetheless, Alex would admit that he would prefer to watch Flannery v/s Steven because the outcome of Wallace v/s Flannery is not a hard guess.
Wallace not only has a type advantage but a great level difference too.
Alex can't imagine how Flannery could win this fight.
He doesn't believe that Flannery can win the fight against Steven, too. But she at least has a 0.001% chance of winning against Steven. Hmm, maybe the number is even smaller. But the point stands the same.
The result of Steven v/s Lima and Wallace v/s Flannery was, as Alex expected, just as he predicted. Steven and Wallace won their fights without any surprise.
Because the strength of Steven and Wallace is so great, these fights were rather one-sided.
Alex knew that tomorrow, the final of the tournament would take place and smiled slightly.
"Steven and Wallace. This is going to be an interesting finale."
