Chapter 1417: Innu’s Stand

Chapter 1417: Innu’s Stand

Innu’s Stand

The Howlers would’ve had a much harder time surviving the battlefield if it weren’t for one crucial sacrifice, a bold, selfless act by a single individual.

That person was Innu.

Right now, he was locked in a brutal one-on-one fight against one of the Iron Fang’s most dangerous members, Luzen.

Luzen wasn’t just a strong Iron Fang. He was elite. A master of pack tactics and devastating when fighting alongside others. With his specialty weapon and his exceptional skills as a hunter-type Werewolf, Luzen was a major threat, able to assist his allies from range, strike silently with arrows, transform into his Werewolf form to take down difficult enemies, and even summon spectral wolf spirits with his bow.

Had Luzen been allowed to roam the battlefield freely, he would’ve torn through the Howlers’ backline in seconds, especially the non-Altered human members holding defensive positions.

Of course, Innu didn’t know any of that.

He hadn’t chosen to face Luzen because he understood the larger strategy or foresaw the consequences. No, he did it for one reason.

To buy time for Austin to escape.

Because deep down, Innu wasn’t sure how much longer either of them could keep running from the monster in front of them.

The car they were in had diverted onto another route, now making its way toward Slough from a different direction. But there was a problem.

Earlier, Innu had hurled his axe, killing the driver. Now, the vehicle was out of control.

Still, Innu had managed to retrieve both axes using his powers, and now, with a fierce cry, he went in for a vertical cross-swing, both weapons aimed straight at Luzen.

Luzen reacted quickly, stepping back, and used his sturdy, uniquely-designed bow to counter the swings. Sparks flew as the bow clashed against the twin blades, but surprisingly, Innu managed to hold his ground.

“Earlier, when you moved the car… it looked like you were the one in control,” Luzen said mid-fight. “You’re an interesting one. I wonder… how are you able to do something like that? Are you one of those with special powers?”

Luzen pressed forward, pushing Innu back as their weapons locked. The bow pressed against the axes with growing pressure, and it was becoming clear, Luzen was physically stronger.

Innu’s strategy relied on focusing his Qi into precise areas of his body to conserve energy and deal pinpoint damage. He didn’t enhance his whole body unless necessary. So when forced into a prolonged struggle like this, it became a drain, an uphill battle.

Luckily, fate seemed to offer him a small advantage.

The out-of-control car slammed against the guard rail, screeching along the side. The sudden jolt knocked both fighters slightly off balance.

Innu seized the moment.

Gathering Qi into his foot, he delivered a brutal kick to Luzen’s midsection.

Luzen flew backward, nearly flung off the roof of the car, until he managed to dig his claws into the rear, hanging on by one hand.

The car continued scraping along the barrier, gradually slowing. Up ahead, Innu could see they were approaching the streets, the more populated, urban part of Slough.

Using his powers, Innu shifted the car slightly to the side. Thankfully, something, perhaps the fallen driver’s foot, was still pressing the gas pedal, so the vehicle continued accelerating.

But that speed was becoming its own problem.

Still, this was his only shot.

With a yell, Innu hurled one of his axes at Luzen’s body.

“Fall off, you damn slimy wolf!” Innu shouted.

The axe flew fast, slicing through the air, but Luzen reacted quickly, using his arm strength to pull himself up and flip gracefully back onto the roof.

As he landed, he tilted his head slightly, just enough to dodge another spinning axe from behind. He caught it in one hand as it returned to him.

“Tch,” Innu clicked his tongue. “I thought that one would’ve landed.”

“I have a good idea of what you can do now,” Luzen said calmly. “Not only am I prepared, but I have enhanced senses. I heard that axe traveling through the wind behind me. Your tricks won’t work again.”

So far, nothing Innu had done had made a real dent. The unstable movement of the car made fighting difficult, but ironically, it also forced Luzen to stay close, limiting his bow’s effectiveness.

Still, there was something else bothering Innu, something eating away at his focus.

They were entering the city now.

I can’t let this fight drag out into the populated areas…

“Well,” Innu said, exhaling through his nose. “I guess I’ll just have to try something else, then.”

He sheathed one of his axes and focused his powers on the steering wheel. With a sharp motion, he twisted it fully to the side.

The car skidded.

Tires screeched. Momentum took hold.

And the vehicle flipped.

Metal crunched and glass shattered as it tumbled across the street, flipping through the air before finally slamming into a lamp post. Sparks burst from the impact, and the car came to a smoking stop.

They had crashed into a grid-style street lined with apartment blocks and closed shops.

The crash was loud, loud enough to wake the neighborhood.

Residents peeked through their windows in shock. Until now, they had only heard rumors about the fighting. None of it had reached their streets, until now.

They looked down at the mangled vehicle, bodies hanging out of it, and had no idea what they were witnessing.

“So, you decided to crash the car, with both of us still in it,” Luzen said, standing at one side of the street, dusting himself off. “You really thought that would work?”

Innu stood at the opposite end, twirling his axes. He had landed safely from the wreck.

“I was hoping the surprise would do something,” Innu muttered. “But I think it’s clear to both of us now…”

He stepped forward, both axes raised.

“…the real fight starts here.”
