Chapter 394 - 394- God’s Gate (Part 31)

Like a bombshell, the information hit Arthur hard. Even when he was already anticipating it, he was still completely stunned. The word ‘God’ alone made his heart stop and his eyes widen as they slowly moved to look at the old chains again.

His entire perspective of these old chains had shifted completely with that simple fact. It was truly fascinating how simply knowing more could change one’s perspective.

“A God is under our feet…” Arthur muttered those words back.

For the boy, the word ‘God’ had always been linked with an omnipotent being, a being that can transcend all logic and break all realities. He wasn’t particularly religious even in his upbringing, but Arthur understood the importance of the existence of a God in many people’s minds.

When he came into the Divine Realm and started learning about its history, Arthur realized that the Gods in this game weren’t the invincible, omnipotent higher beings he thought they were. They could be defeated, they could make mistakes, and more importantly… they can die.

That made them fundamentally flawed, like humans are. So, Arthur naturally questioned what made them different from humans and other creatures in the Divine Realm. Was it power? Was it their status, or perhaps the blessing of the Great One?

The answer to that question was still vague and hard to figure out, as he didn’t know much about these entities yet.

‘This… This is a sick joke… A very sick joke.’ Arthur didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. He had just come across something completely unpredictable. Instead of learning about these vanished Gods, he had actually found one of them… stuck in the darkest place in the world.

“Hold on a second, Nameless. A God? Right here?”

“Indeed. The same Gods that vanished eons ago. Everyone thought they had been erased from existence, and yet reality is often far more ironic than most people think. One of these Gods had been stuck down here, shackled with these chains to remain in the blinding darkness beneath. They can’t see, hear, or sense anything. For hundreds and hundreds of years, their hearts and minds were sealed completely, and yet their consciousness remained awakened so that they could experience every bit of torture imaginable.”

“How? I mean, how could that be? I thought they all disappeared forever!”

“Things don’t just disappear, Persona. People simply didn’t look far enough. This revelation was reserved for people like us… Who dare and venture beyond the limit.”

“This is ridiculous,” Arthur muttered as he looked at the chains again. “Can I… Can I take a look down at the abyss from there?”

An idea formed in his head out of nowhere, fueled by his own curiosity about what he could see. He wasn’t too optimistic, but his senses drove him to at least give it a try.

‘Why do I even want to look down there? Am I losing my mind?’ Arthur asked himself while still looking intently at the hole. His senses had been calling for him to take a look ever since he laid eyes on it. It was a very strong feeling that he couldn’t resist and it made him even more confused.

“Go ahead. But don’t fall there or you will never see light again… Not that there is any light here to begin with.”

With Nameless’ weird jokes in the background, Arthur stepped forward slowly, all his senses focused on the hole as if it were the only thing in the world. His ears stopped listening, and his eyes lost focus except for the hole itself.

He could almost swear he was hearing voices in his head, beckoning him to get closer. At some point, his entire body stopped listening to him and started moving on its own, and before he realized it, he was near the edge, staring directly at the abyss beneath.

His eyes were wide, his breathing was audible, and a bead of sweat trickled down his forehead.

The moment he took that darkness in his eyes, his heart skipped a beat.

“Hah…” He gasped, his face paling visibly as he took a step back. All the color was sucked out of his skin as if he had witnessed something horrifying. “What… No… What…”

He muttered some incoherent words as he fell on his back. He couldn’t comprehend what he just saw. Holding his face, his eyes stared blankly at the ground, not knowing what to make of anything.

‘That darkness almost sucked me… What was that image I just saw? What was that voice?’

It was a fleeting second, and what he saw wasn’t even clear. Yet, the feeling it struck in his heart was the worst he had experienced in a very long time. The image could only be described as a scene of immense pain… Crying voices that lost all humanity, an amalgamation of chaos and flesh that doesn’t resemble anything that exists or will ever exist.

It was an image emerging from the depths of people’s worst nightmares, exceeding the fear and primal instinct of survival that one could have. It was evil.

“Oh my… What did you see, boy?” Nameless asked with a wide grin on his face.

“I… I don’t know.” Arthur replied. “It was quick. I couldn’t see anything fully clearly. But why is it so evil? What did I just see?!”

“Hahahaha! What you have just felt is the God’s presence down there, boy. After such a long time stuck in the darkness, their Divine aura is gone, and the evil nature of this world has consumed them completely. What you have seen is what that God has turned into… An immangled, distorted version of their Divine self. Nothing of their true nature is left intact.”

“But- But, why? Why are they cursed to experience such torture forever?” Arthur asked. “What sin did they commit?”

Just imagining the level of pain this God was experiencing made Arthur squint. Eternal darkness, chained and restricted even from seeing and hearing. They couldn’t know time or if they were truly alive yet.

If there were truly something as the worst pain in this world, this would take the cake. It was an absolute mental and physical destruction.

“Hmm, that I still don’t know, kid. The reason one of these Gods is locked in here is still a mystery I’m working on. The other mystery I’m working on is the location of the other Gods. Since one of them is here, the others should be somewhere, perhaps still alive like this one.”

“…”

‘What the hell did I get myself into? Everyone thinks Gods don’t exist anymore. If this information were to be made public, the consequences would be too vast to control.’

This realization will make people madly head into the abyss, trying to get a glimpse of this mythical being. The results of this could cause every single plan Arthur and the others had in mind to get completely destroyed.

“I’m certain you’re starting to realize the weight of this information, aren’t you? The fact that a God people worship is stuck here and is now but a piece of disgusting filth… Hahahaha, just imagining it makes me smile. This is too exciting!”

“What? What do you want of me, Nameless?” Arthur clenched his teeth. “Why are you showing me this? For what reason?”
