Chapter 1048: The Sudden Disappearance
The situation on the open ground was almost clear as day. Even the more concealed corners were visible from Ye Kai’s perspective… Meanwhile, Zhang Xincheng was staring outside, clearly oblivious to the whereabouts of the missing person.
“Could he have run into the factory over there? Maybe his ‘pee break’ turned into a ‘poop emergency,’ you know, those uncontrollable bodily functions…” the Pilot speculated.
Ye Kai glanced at him, then called out to Zhang Xincheng, “Zhang Xincheng, keep an eye on things here. I’ll be right back!”
“Is something wrong?” Zhang Xincheng nodded first, then asked from a distance.
“No worries, just keep watch,” Ye Kai replied after a moment’s thought.
“Should I help you look?” the Pilot suddenly offered.
Judging by his expression, he didn’t seem worried anymore… Perhaps after suggesting that possibility, he had relaxed, now thinking about how to give his companion a scare…
Ye Kai initially wanted to refuse such a trivial request, but after taking a few steps, he noticed the Pilot was already following him with a mischievous grin. He raised an eyebrow and said, “Stick close to me.”
“No problem… But Ye Kai, you’re too tense. Hasn’t this place always been safe? You really startled me with your reaction earlier…” the Pilot caught up and said.
“Temporary safety doesn’t mean we can let our guard down,” Ye Kai replied.
“Life should be a bit more relaxed… Otherwise, surviving just means staying tense all the time, right?” the Pilot shook his head. “But then again, when we’re flying, we’re just as tense. So when we get some downtime, we look for fun. You don’t even smoke,” he said, waving the cigarette in his hand.
“Being cautious… That’s what the captain demands,” Ye Kai said.
The Pilot was about to continue chatting, but hearing Ye Kai mention Ling Mo, he could only chuckle awkwardly, “Right… right…”
Seeing the Pilot finally quiet down, Ye Kai, who wasn’t fond of idle chatter, felt a wave of relief wash over him…
The factory was essentially a steel-framed building, with its walls sealed with red bricks. The windows under the roof were covered in layers of dust. The entrance bore traces of blood, and wild grass sprouted from the door cracks.
The factory door was ajar, leaving a gap wide enough for a person to pass through. From the outside, only a Dark Shadow was visible, giving off a somewhat eerie vibe.
Ye Kai took out his Flashlight and walked in without hesitation. The Pilot, looking thrilled, followed him in, rubbing his hands together and muttering, “Just wait, I’ll scare the life out of you…”
As soon as they entered, their view was obstructed by various mechanical equipment, some of which were towering, large machines. It felt like a collection of rusty steel beasts. However, due to the high ceiling, the factory didn’t feel cramped; instead, it seemed quite spacious.
“Clack… clack…”
After taking a few steps, the pilot was startled by the sound of his own footsteps. Feeling a bit uneasy, he remarked, “What’s that guy thinking, having the guts to come to a place like this…”
Ye Kai, on the other hand, boldly swung his flashlight around and called out, “Is anyone there?”
But aside from Ye Kai’s echo, the entire factory remained silent.
After shouting several times, Ye Kai’s expression began to turn grim. Even the pilot sensed something was amiss and nervously said, “Why isn’t he answering? If it were me, he might pretend not to be here, but you’re the one calling…” ℞𝘈ꞐÓ𝐛Εs̩
“How long has he been gone?” Ye Kai asked.
“Just under two minutes,” the pilot estimated. “He’s the closest to here; he wouldn’t go far to the small building. Even if he did, you could see him, right? If he headed to the entrance, Zhang Xincheng would definitely spot him.”
His point was clear-the person would only come here. But if that’s the case, why is there no response in the factory?
“Follow me,” Ye Kai suddenly quickened his pace and said.
The pilot’s expression turned tense as well, and upon hearing Ye Kai, he hurriedly followed.
The factory wasn’t too large, but it had many nooks and crannies. Five minutes later, Ye Kai and the pilot returned to the factory’s entrance.
They stood behind the door, looking at each other…
No one…
They had searched every corner but hadn’t seen a single trace of anyone.
“What’s going on?” The pilot said, his face pale. “Even if it’s a joke, he couldn’t hide this well… Besides, he wouldn’t dare joke with you…”
Ye Kai had a fierce look, and they really wouldn’t dare pull such a stunt… But the more he thought about it, the more the pilot couldn’t help but panic.
A perfectly healthy person just vanished…
“Search again,” Ye Kai gritted his teeth and said.
“But we just…”
“Search!”
However, the result of the second search was the same… except this time, Ye Kai discovered something new on the ground.
The dusty ground was covered with footprints… Some were left from their initial exploration, while two were fresh from their recent entry. At first glance, it was impossible to discern anything from these footprints, but upon closer inspection, Ye Kai noticed one footprint that seemed to have the heel slightly lifted.
“This person sneaked in,” Ye Kai pointed at the footprint.
“So what? The person is missing now…” The Pilot was visibly shaken.
Ye Kai responded coldly, “Calm down! Think about it, under what circumstances would someone sneak in like this? You mentioned earlier that he came to use the restroom…”
The Pilot paused, then suddenly realized, “Yeah! That doesn’t make sense! So, does that mean… he actually came here for some other reason?”
“What other reason?”
“Like… to mess around?”
“You wouldn’t need to tiptoe for that!” Ye Kai snapped.
Judging by the Pilot’s stiff expression, it was clear he knew the answer but was too afraid to voice it…
“He might have… discovered something here,” Ye Kai turned his gaze towards the factory, “Something he thought was harmless but ultimately led to his disappearance…”
“So what should we… do now?” The Pilot instinctively took a step back, asking.
His initial sense of ease had vanished due to this unexpected incident. Indeed, there was no truly safe place in the world… Danger could quietly approach without you even realizing it…
And the most terrifying part was that even while standing in the midst of danger, they still had no idea what the true nature of the threat was…
“And Zhang She… is he dead or alive now…” The Pilot stammered.
Ye Kai’s expression was grave, “Something’s gone wrong… and at such a critical time, something like this happens…”
The Pilot understood his meaning… Ling Mo hadn’t awakened yet, and Skinny Monkey hadn’t fully recovered… With things going wrong, their actions were bound by numerous concerns. But with someone missing, they had to find a way to deal with it…
“What should we do…” The Pilot kept repeating, understanding the situation but unable to offer any useful suggestions due to his chaotic emotions.
Ye Kai thought for a moment, hesitantly saying, “Let’s head back… Searching aimlessly won’t yield any results. Let’s see what they have to say… Since there’s danger lurking here, Zhang She’s disappearance might not be a simple matter.”
“A… trap?” The Pilot asked.
“I don’t know either, let’s go.” Ye Kai turned off the flashlight and glanced back at the factory.
In such a nearly enclosed space, how did the other party manage to take Zhang She away? And what exactly took Zhang She?
The most crucial question was, when did the other party start targeting them?
