Chapter 999: 999 Not All That Glitters
While Wolfe and Ella were getting along famously with their morning partners, not everyone was so lucky. Mio had drawn a pair who simply couldn’t get along. They hated each other at first sight, and there didn’t seem to be a proper reason for it.
Anything the other said was taken as snark or sarcasm, and they had been bickering all morning. The fact that she was on duty to train the guards during their daily practice today wasn’t helping, as it only gave the two more to argue about, even though neither of them was capable of doing what the ladies of the guard were practising.
They were working on their in-flight targeting skills, and the Fae with Mio was no good with air magic, while the human candidate hadn’t awakened her magic yet.
Finally, it was one of the guards that snapped.
“Will you two cut it out? If you can’t behave yourselves for even the first half of the first day, I will recommend that Saint Noxus drops you both from the program.” She snarled.
The two were about to launch into an explanation of why the other one was at fault, but both managed to catch themselves before they made it worse.
“Now, apologize to Mio for giving her a headache, and let us get back to our training. Who knows, you might learn a thing or two if you actually pay attention.” The guard added.
Thoroughly chastised, the two started to actually pay attention to what the guards were learning about mobile suppression. It was a lesson in criminal apprehension, capturing a suspect without harming them, using the power of the flying staves and stun spells to keep order in a chaotic situation.
It was a valuable skill for the Pentacle members to learn if they were going to work as ambassadors to other areas, where tensions might be high while they mediated negotiations, or represented Forest Grove during a meeting.
Being able to calm a situation without harming anyone was vital to maintaining stability. If you put one of the parties in the hospital, or worse, killed them, then there was no returning to civil discourse, and any credibility you had as an impartial mediator would be permanently ruined.
While Mio’s problem was bickering, Mollie had quite the opposite problem, and her two followers for the morning had been flirting ever since they met.
Molly was normally a very reserved person about such things, but she was beginning to wonder if these two were actually part succubus, or somehow immune to shame as they sorted tomes in the library, repairing damages, or in Molly’s case, recreating damaged pages, so that the unfortunate books could be sent out once again.
It wasn’t a task that had to be done often, as the witches were normally careful with the books, but accidents happen, and once a month, they would task someone to repair a small collection of damages.
As they were in the library, the two were at least quietly flirting with each other, but their actions were attracting many giggles and curious looks from the students who were passing through between classes, or grabbing books for additional study.
With half an hour until lunch, Molly couldn’t take the secondhand embarrassment of the loving soon to be couple anymore and decided to send them away.
“Why don’t you go inspect the private reading rooms for the next half an hour and then meet me here for lunch? Sometimes they don’t get fully cleaned, so make a good inspection. The door locks, so you won’t be interrupted.” She whispered.
“Of course, Miss Molly, we are happy to help.” The Nymph agreed, before practically dragging the human girl with her into one of the rooms.
It was likely the first crush for both of them, and at the very least, there would be no risk of pregnancy from making out in a private room for a while, so Molly felt no guilt about sending them away while she finished her work for the morning.
She was just finishing her work and about to get the others for lunch, and to send them to different groups, when she realized that the library was exceptionally quiet right now. As if nobody was moving around, or doing much of anything.
But when she got up to check the private rooms, she found that the occupants of the library were not so discretely gathered at the tables around one of the private rooms, being as silent as they could. The private rooms were private, in that there was a door, and they were enclosed, but you had to put up your own soundproof barrier.
That was a fact that these two youngsters did not seem to know, or care about.
Molly tapped at the door to get their attention. “Alright, put your clothes back on and come out for lunch.”
There was a round of giggling and rustling on the other side of the door, and then the two came out with flushed cheeks, while the Nymph was braiding the human girl’s hair.
“The private rooms aren’t soundproof unless you activate the soundproof charm yourself, by the way. It’s on the wall beside the door.” Molly whispered, keeping her voice down, as they were still in the Library.
“Sorry, Miss Molly.” They responded in unison.
“Well, I do hope you both behave for your partners this afternoon. Do remember that this is a test of your personality and teamwork skills, not a dating program.” Molly whispered to them, while the witches at the tables nearby giggled.
It was a silent and embarrassed walk up to the spire for lunch, while Molly took in the faces of the other Candidates. This was the first taste of freedom, the first time that they were allowed outside the family home without a chaperone watching their every move, so she did recognize that it was inevitable that many of them would push boundaries and let loose a bit too much.
But, most of them seemed to have gotten along well enough, with only a few pairs glaring at each other, and a few clueless ones being glared at by their partner while they chattered obliviously.
