Chapter 1116: 1116 Prepare The Castle

It took them until after midnight to get all of the applicants sorted, and then another entire day to get everyone set up in their roles after the job fair was finished.

Naturally, that meant that the portals had to be kept open the entire time, so that new hires could retrieve their personal belongings, and in some cases their families.

Those who were living in the staff quarters on the other side of the valley were free to bring their spouse and children, while all of the ones hired to work inside the castle had been verified to be free of those attachments, so they could comfortably live in the confines of the castle for an extended period.

That was both for simplicity of scheduling, and for their own safety.

Wolfe didn’t have many enemies, but if he was going to make a play to take over as leader of the world, there were going to be those who did not approve, and having castle staff out in the open exposed them to risks.

Having the people closest to him risk their families simply wasn’t acceptable, so for the maids and others who would be in the castle itself, they had ensured that none of them had a family of their own.

Fortunately, that was a standard thing for most castles, and while it meant that they often rotated maids after four or five years, so that the older ones could start a family, it was effective enough to be standard practice on every world they had encountered.

Even the Demon Kings did the same thing, though the Incubus King put them on a one-year rotation as a reward because his people gained power through intimate relations, and there were plenty of powerful visitors to the palace.

There were a surprising number of Lust Demons among the new hires as Wolfe inspected those who had been chosen to work within the castle.

The fact that they were chosen by both the new department heads and the other Pentacle members was somewhat startling to Wolfe. He had expected a few Incubi as eye candy for the largely female staff, but there were over a dozen Succubi among the maids, making up close to a quarter of the total number.

Now, some of that was likely that they had experience, and a particular fondness for the outfit, but still, the number was unexpected.

The next morning, the second after the hiring fair, was the soft opening and trial run of the castle staff. The specialists had been invited over with their families for brunch in the castle, so everything needed to be perfect, and the kitchens would be reaching their usual volumes for the first time.

It would be worse during major events, as the whole castle would be packed. But there were more people than would usually be guests here, so it was a solid simulation of what they could expect.

The butler’s staff were welcoming everyone to the castle, with guards stationed at all the strategic locations, as if this were an actual event for dignitaries, and not coworkers.

Then Wolfe found out where all the Succubi went. They had been assigned to prepare the rooms, to keep them mostly away from the guests so that there weren’t any incidents with people who might not understand about Lust Demons, but a few of them had managed to win the draw to serve Wolfe and his wives.

It was a position of honour for the maids, as the one bringing food to the King had to be highly trusted not to poison the food after it was tested. The fact they had managed it implied that these three were the top of the hierarchy when it came to the serving staff, and were likely right under the department head in respect among their peers.

Once the food was on the table, Wolfe turned to Cassie, who tapped her glass to get everyone’s attention.

“Thank you all for joining us at brunch today for the soft opening of the Castle. It is a pleasure to see you all settling in well today. If there have been any issues that we have overlooked, please leave us a note in the suggestion box by the door, or inform one of the Pentacle members directly.

We prefer it to be in writing, so that nobody forgets in the chaos of our daily lives, so please keep that in mind in the future. If a simple note isn’t enough, just write the basics, and explain the rest when you deliver it.

Now, the fine ladies of the kitchen have prepared their first large dinner, so enjoy.”

The staff burst into applause as she finished, and Wolfe noted that she shifted slightly uncomfortably as she settled back into her seat.

She was only a few months into her pregnancy, but she was beginning to show, and she had been complaining that every part of her was too sensitive.

Once the applause faded, everyone started to eat, looking shocked at the quality of the food.

There were no low-quality ingredients here, everything was a magical plant or monster meat. But the Fae had a trick to their cooking that made it edible for nonmagical humans, so any guest could enjoy their cooking.

Not that there were any nonmagical humans here. There were humans, but they had all learned the basics of magic before arriving, and no longer suffered from the types of food that the other species normally ate.

The execution of the serving staff was flawless. The Head Maid had clearly been coaching them, as they were even moving in unison, as if they had been practising where to go all day. It was well beyond his expectations, and Wolfe began to relax a little as the competence of the staff made everything finally seem somewhat normal.

Now, they just needed to plan for the Coronation Ceremony, and ensure that everything went this smoothly when it really mattered.
