Chapter 1111: 1111 Cookoff

Wolfe smiled at the contestants. “Well, there is only one way to test our head chef candidates. We have ingredients here, or we will grow them quickly. We will ask each contestant to make a minimum of five dishes, comprising three meals.

It might be challenging to do it in a shared kitchen, without your usual staff, but that is also part of the challenge. We will be judging on taste, mass appeal, and the chef’s ability to work with and around others.

Being able to get along with strangers in your kitchen is also a challenge, but it will be part of your life as the maid staff cycles through, and necessary to getting the kitchen set up for the first time.

If you all will follow me, we will go to the kitchens.

Those who are not competing for the position will join us as judges.”

Wolfe closed the portals back to their home locations and led everyone downstairs to the main kitchen to begin their work.

“This is the main kitchen. There are others scattered around the property for guests, snacks, special events and separate staff meals, when there are not enough people here to warrant using the full kitchen.

I don’t foresee that happening often, but it will also be available for staff to make their own snacks.

Now, please take a moment to check the pantry for what we have available. Someone did stock the pantry, right?” Wolfe asked the Pentacle members.

“We did. Only about an hour ago, but we got everything ready for the first arrivals this morning.” Cassie laughed.

The Head Chef candidates spread out, checking cupboards for utensils, then reviewing the ingredients and planning for their meal selection.

Five dishes for three meals was a whole day’s meal planning, so they couldn’t just throw out their specialty dish and hope it was better than everyone else’s.

The meals would also need to go together, as they would be sampling them all at once, and they would have to still be decent lukewarm, as most of the chefs would finish near the same time, so not all the sampling would be done while the meals were at their freshest.

Cassie raised her voice to be heard over the noise. “Ladies, please start with breakfast, and we will judge that while the luncheon meal is being prepared.”

It was only a few minutes before the first pots and pans were coming out, and Wolfe noticed that there were very different approaches to the meal.

Some of them were creating very elaborate dishes that required multiple pans and dozens of ingredients, some were making simple dishes that would be garnished to a high standard, to make them look fancier than they were.

Wolfe settled at the staff table in the back of the kitchen, where the workers could sit on break without having to go far, or those who missed a meal could catch a quick bite to eat.

The rest of the group milled about, watching and not so silently judging the candidates.

They were all capable chefs, as it was a necessary skill for a Head Maid, and they all had opinions on how things should go.

The fact that they were from multiple worlds and different species meant that there was a rather notable disparity in what would be considered normal fare in their kitchen for breakfast, but most of them seemed to have noticed that already, and were looking at Wolfe and the Witches’ response to see what they thought of the meals in progress.

They made up nearly half the votes, and humans weren’t known to be all that picky, so if they could impress the Witches, they should do well.

The real issue was going to be the Demons and the Fae.

Other than Drazzit and Monika, the Fae were vegetarian, while most of the demons preferred a lot of meat. Then there were the two succubi, who most of the candidates had no idea how to properly feed, as the rumours in most worlds said they just fed off sexual energy.

Ten minutes later, the first dish came out.

Surprisingly, it was a fairly young Witch, by Head Maid standards, in her mid-thirties, and she had made a congee with cinnamon buttered toast and sides of thinly sliced roast meat and eggs.

Wolfe took a bit of each before Cassie stole the toast from his hand after the first bite.

“Ah, cinnamon toast. That’s good.” She sighed, while Ella laughed.

The candidate laughed as Cassie tried the rest of breakfast, but skipped on the eggs.

“I get the feeling that this challenge is on hard mode. Not only do we get to see what appeals to the most candidates, we also have to account for pregnancy cravings.” She joked.

That made the task both unpredictable and nearly impossible for the candidates to get a perfect score on, but so far, neither Cassie nor Ella had any particularly strange cravings.

The next few options came out at nearly the same time, and samples were taken by all of the judges, just in time for the last few breakfast options to arrive.

“Is that everyone?” Wolfe asked as he made one last note.

The chefs nodded, and Wolfe gestured to his witches.

“If we can clean up for them, ladies, please prepare for your luncheon meal option.”

With their magic, and being at the Saint Rank, it only took a second to get the kitchen spotless and all of the used dishes sanitized and ready to be put away.

[It looks like the cinnamon toast was a real hit.] Ella noted in Wolfe’s mind as she caught Cassie daydreaming between tests.

[Yeah, it disappeared much faster than expected. Simple, but excellent.]

The others seemed to feel the same way, and it was even an option that the Fae could eat. Not everyone had realized that some species didn’t eat meat, so there were bound to be a few zeroes among the scores.

Everyone had different tastes, though. So one person finding a dish inedible was likely to have happened to nearly everyone.
