Chapter 1071: 1071 Asmodai
A twenty-minute swim took them to their next destination, where again, there was someone waiting to welcome them. This time it was an obviously undead man, with glowing blue embers where his eyes should be in a sunken face.
“Greetings, I am Patriarch Wolfe Noxus. Is it safe to approach with the cleansing spell active?” Wolfe asked.
“Please do. The zombies will thank you for it.” The Lich Lord replied.
That response terrified Wolfe’s escort, and they began looking around with nervous expressions, not wanting to end up as one of the undead because they got bitten by a zombie. Wolfe’s cleansing spell had kept them safe from the horrors of the lost continent so far, but one could never be too careful.
Wolfe could sense them at the back of the estate, in what he assumed would be a servant’s building.
This was much larger than the beach house, covering fifty acres or more, with a large main house, two smaller houses and a number of outbuildings.
The Lich Lord bowed politely as Wolfe approached. “Patriarch Noxus, I am Castellan Asmodai of the Chronos Family. Welcome to our humble abode. Might I ask what brings you here?”
“I have recently taken over the lead of the Noxus Family, and I have come to the sunken continent to cleanse the curses and miasma lingering on it.
It has been two hundred years since the war, and it is time to let the undead rest, as well as preventing further pollution to the ocean. But I am also here to recover any historical records that might have survived, assuming that they are in danger of destruction or belong to the Noxus Family.
You see, the casualties on the surface were so high that the proper techniques and practices for advancing to the King Rank were lost, and I would like to bring back some of the old traditions as I work to rebuild the Family.”
Asmodai sighed sadly. “It would be wonderful if some of my Family had survived. But the last of the Chronos Oracles left the world before the war started, so the Family’s power could not be used against our own people.
Now, the only remnants of the Family are those without Time Magic, and the art has been lost to eternity.”
Wolfe shook his head. “Not entirely lost. I recently met with King Drider, Eternal King of the Underdark, and his prophetic abilities are still intact. In fact, it was his recommendation that led me here at this time.”
The Lich Lord laughed. “King Drider’s visions. Oh, now that is a blast from the past. I met him in person once when I was a child. Oh, it must be a thousand years ago now. I was already an old man, and a Saint in my own right, when the war started.
But I suppressed my aura when the rest of my Family left, so I could continue to do my job and protect the house. The Oracle said it would work, and that I would keep the house safe past the end of the war.
I should have asked for more details.”
Wolfe laughed along with him. “Do you think that the Oracles would have told you? They were always known for being cryptic, so they didn’t influence the future. But they weren’t wrong, your Family home still stands.
If you can make a spell to look for those with your Family’s bloodline, and an Inheritance Crystal, I can set it up in Forest Grove, my Capital City, and any with unknown Magi Bloodlines can come to test themselves.”
Asmodai looked shocked. “You’re not just taking every survivor that you can find into the Noxus Family?”
Wolfe shrugged. “Yes and no. The Inheritance that I have only works for those of the bloodline, so those inducted only get half of the Inheritance. If they can gain a full inheritance from their own Family, and perhaps establish a new branch of their own, it would be a wonderful thing.”
“You are a unique one, Wolfe Noxus. But I suppose that without the other Patriarchs to compete with, the game would be no fun to play. There is no victory in stealing the members from an empty seat.” Asmodai sighed.
“If all goes well, the seats won’t be empty forever. Times have changed, and the survivors are beginning to come out in the open again. Within a generation, we will have proper Magi Families openly walking the world again, and this time, working actively to keep the peace, instead of isolating ourselves until matters became irreversible.”
The Lich Lord led Wolfe inside the manor house, while the others refused to leave the water to pass through the barrier.
“If you wait here a moment, I will make crystals for you. I might be undead, but a Lich Lord still has enough power to do my duties here, including creating gifts to welcome guests to the house.
Have you been to the Noxus Main House yet?” Asmodai asked.
“Not yet. I came in at the beach house, and met with Jolene. Lovely girl, really. I gave her a mana gathering spell to ease her hunger and clear her thoughts, so she might be by here again when she has days off. She mentioned you and directed me here as my next stop.” Wolfe explained.
“Such a lovely young lady. You know, I was intending to court her before the war, but I never got the chance. Perhaps once the miasma is cleared, and we won’t be risking corruption to travel outside our barriers, I will try again.
She should be a Vampire Count now, so not without her own powers, but neither of us will ever be able to go to the surface. I bound myself to the Chronos Family home, and she is allergic to sunlight.” Asmodai agreed.
“Will we be likely to run across greater Undead whose minds have been corrupted as we travel?” Wolfe asked.
“Not likely. It’s been two hundred years already. Those who didn’t find a safe place to call home have mostly devolved into one of the mindless horde, and your cleansing magic will return them to your predecessor and our ancestors in the underworld.
I should have known that the Undying Saint wouldn’t remain dead forever out of grief. I am glad that he returned long enough to sire a new heir to the Noxus Family.”
