Chapter 1038: 1038 The Role of Amabassadors
Wolfe smiled at the reference to the Dwarves’ love for tunnels. It might be a biased assumption, but the Dwarves didn’t take it personally. It was like accusing them of liking Ale, it was such an obvious thing that you would have to be an idiot not to notice.
In fact, refusing a drink was generally seen as a sign of excessive stress or illness among the Dwarves.
“I will pass this to Cassie and Ella, and the Pentacles will work together to come up with a good answer as to where or even if an expansion of the Forges should be built. I suspect that it will be built in the next mountain over, as was suggested, but they might just be looking for an excuse to blow things up for fun, and they can do that without a dedicated space.” Wolfe explained.
The Candidates all laughed, and Khalifa smiled at them.
“I think I’m the only one who was here before I was chosen, and referring things to the Pentacles for a group decision is the most common outcome for many of these requests. There are often good ones, but not all of them can be accommodated.
I remember in the spring there was a suggestion that a border patrol was put around the edges of the Fae Forest to keep monster traffic down and to intercept visitors before they got lost.
Now, we still do patrols through the forest, but not dedicated loops along the border. The number of residents in the Forest allows us to find the lost visitors easily enough, and if they were smart, they would just go to one of the dedicated entry points instead of wandering in and getting lost.” She explained.
Annette, the Faerie, giggled at that and flickered around the room at full speed.
“Finding visitors is fun. It’s like a little treasure hunt, but they can’t see you because the forest blinds them with illusions and leaves them wandering. But if you call their name, it comes through all distorted, and you can make them freak out.” She announced.
The other Fae laughed.
“So, it’s an actual Fae Forest, not just a forest full of Fae?” Drazzit asked.
Annette raced around the room again, spreading excited Faerie dust. “Yep. But the Bog Witch is really mad that it’s covered by Kind Intentions, so she can’t eat the people she finds. Instead, she will just knock them out and dump them at the gate.
Sometimes she hangs them from a tree if they insult her, but if you see someone at the gate sleeping, it’s likely magical and one of the Dark Fae knocked them out when they got annoying.”
“How do they know who belongs here, and who is a visitor?” Lucy, the Library Aficionado of the human candidates, asked curiously.
Khalifa shook her head as she answered. “Oh, locals don’t get magically lost in the forest. They get lost all the time, because of their lousy sense of direction, but not blinded by the forest magic. It’s pretty obvious once you see them, as the locals will be able to see you.
But if you’re going to go wandering in the forest, stay away from the big lake, that’s the home of a powerful Water Nymph, and she gets mad when people just barge in. Also, don’t harass the trolls unless you enjoy being the target of vicious practical jokes, and remember that wild animals and monsters might still try to eat you.
It’s not malicious, they’re just hungry. Only the intelligent beings are restricted from eating you.”
The others made actual notes in their notepad for that one. It was a good thing to remember, in case you happened to be in the forest without an escort.
Some of the other Pentacle members had led them through the forest to check on various Fae, or through the tunnels to nearby towns which required assistance, but they hadn’t come across any monsters.
Most things were scared off by the presence of a Rank Six Witch. The monsters recognized them as a more dangerous predator, unless they were crazed or starving, and neither of those things was usually true of the ones in the Fae Forest.
“Alright, back on topic, here are everyone’s next complaints. Let’s see what you all can come up with. The better you understand the involved parties, the easier the job becomes, so you will have extensive training on everyone that we have regular dealings with.
When you are sent out on missions, you will be at least in pairs for the majority of missions, along with assistants, but the Pentacle bond will allow you to consult the other Pentacle members or myself, no matter how far you are.
As we’ve grown in power, so has the link, so as long as we’re all on the same planet, you should be fine. It’s only when visiting King Petros that we might encounter issues, though most of that is mitigated by the constantly open portal to his world.
I set up a permanent opening to the trial grounds from his Capital City.”
The candidates nodded. The humans had come here through it, and the Fae had realized it quickly after they arrived, as watching the Trials was a favourite pastime for people in Forest Grove.
The Candidates looked down at the second round of complaints and realized that they weren’t more difficult, they were the same sort of nonsense complaints, so Wolfe hadn’t structured this as a progressive trial for them.
“Are we just doing your morning paperwork for you?” Khalifa asked as she wrote up a response to the complaint in front of her.
“I won’t lie or try to sugar coat it. Yes, that is precisely what you’re doing right now. It’s an essential task, and when I’m not here to do it, it usually falls to the Pentacle members. So, as the Candidates for the next two Pentacles, this will be your job as well if you are selected.
The more practice that you have with solving these little problems, the easier the big problems will become. I know that a few of you have more experience than others, but it’s still a valuable exercise, both for the skills and for the patience.”
