One girl from the back of the group immediately melted into the crowd. Of course, Wolfe already knew who they were, but it was a good attempt, and with Fae magic, she had seemed to simply vanish as if she had only happened to be standing near them.

That was bonus points for her intelligence, but it didn’t excuse her poor choice in friends, or any past behaviour that others had seen.

The mean girls’ group bowed politely. “Saint Noxus, our apologies for letting you see such a shameful scene. You see, our friend was quite intent on obtaining the necklace, and we may have gotten carried away.” The lead Fae explained, using her magic to make it seem more reasonable.

Against many targets that would work. But the power difference between the two of them was far too large for such simple tricks, even if Wolfe didn’t have protective spells up.

“Unfortunately, it sold before you could get to the shop. Perhaps he could make you another?” Wolfe suggested.

The Fae shook her head. “I’m sure she will get over the disappointment. It has been a pleasure seeing you today, Saint Noxus. But we should get back to our shopping before we need to meet with our teammates for the afternoon.”

“Of course, don’t let me keep you from important tasks.”

The girls scattered, all headed in different directions, and the shopkeeper sighed in relief.

He nodded politely at Wolfe. “I’ve never been good at dealing with cat fights. No offence to current company. With the Kind Intentions barrier in place, there are far fewer physical fights, so it’s all snark and mean words to get their way.

I suppose that’s inevitable, but it’s especially annoying among those who have high ranks at home and are used to ordering people around. The Witches figured it out pretty quickly, since they already respected magical power. But…”

He trailed off and Wolfe nodded. “Oh, I understand. That’s why we’re vetting the candidates for so long, and not just going by resumes and connections.

I think that we’ve almost got them sorted out. The Pentacle members have been keeping notes on who works well together, who doesn’t and who has unique skills that will help them relate to other nations.”

The shopkeeper smiled. “Well, in that case, I do hope that Annette and Khalifa make the cut.”

“Which one is Annette?” Wolfe asked.

“The blue Faerie. She’s easy to spot, since all the others prefer to wear green and gold.” The shopkeeper laughed.

“You know, that’s the second referral she’s gotten today. I think I will have to spend some more time with this Faerie.” Wolfe replied.

The break was over, and everyone who lived in Forest Grove was returning to their duties, reducing the crowd in the market by a third, but that was quickly replaced by others who had been avoiding the market during the busiest hours.

When you were visiting Forest Grove, it was best not to try to keep to a schedule. If you just went wherever you needed, whenever you felt like it, you had as good of a chance as any other time of it not being busy.

The only real exception was for the shops where you could visit at night. The markets you could visit any time, but if you wanted to make a custom order with the artisans who created the items and not the vendors who were getting a cut to sell them, you had to show up during the day while they were awake and relatively sober.

That last part was important when you wanted weapons and tools, as the Dwarves were known to start drinking heavily after dinner, and then nothing productive would get done. Late night forge sessions were for pleasure, not business.

“I believe that I have kept you long enough. Enjoy your afternoon Malika, I’m going to the spire to gather some candidates for the afternoon.” Wolfe explained.

“Good luck, Mister Wolfe. I hope that you can find the very best ones.”

The waitress ran off home to end her day, and Wolfe flew up to the spire, where the groups were about to head out.

“Wait, before you all run away. I will take a larger group for the afternoon. Whoever has extras, or wasn’t planning to do much this afternoon, can give their team to me, and I will do a group building exercise.” Wolfe called out before anyone could leave.

“A group building exercise?” Cassie asked, knowing full well that Wolfe had made that up on the spot.

“Yes. Actually, forget the randomness. I have a list with me, and every one of these names was mentioned by people in town today. Not all in a positive light. What I want to know is if you can impress me enough to overcome the opinions I received from the townspeople, or to live up to the praises that they heaped upon you.” Wolfe explained.

Some of the candidates were panicked, while others looked confident. Interestingly, Lucy, the ginger haired bookworm among the human Candidates, was with the group panicking. Perhaps she thought that she had been called out for always being in the Library and was going to be called to task by Wolfe.

“From the Fae Candidates, I would like to meet with Khalifa, Drazzit, Monika, Nola and Annette today. There are more names for tomorrow, so if your name wasn’t called today, no need to panic.” Wolfe announced.

The Fae relaxed a little, but Wolfe could tell that most of them had already realized that this was the first string option, and the other ten would have to impress Wolfe enough to steal one of those spots in the next few days.

The human candidates didn’t have that same level of awareness, as they had formed cliques much more quickly, and didn’t have the awareness to realize how everyone else was being viewed.

“From the human side, I would like to meet with Serra, Jessica, Lucy…”

[Add Melanie and Francisca.] Cassie informed him.

“Francisca and Melanie.

That makes ten for the day, and five candidates from each group of Pentacle applicants. Now, if the others can split up the others so you still have pairs, or a day off, you can go about your day. I will see the Pentacle Members after dinner for a meeting on their opinions beyond what was in the reports.”
