Chapter 1028: 1028 Suggestions

Wolfe led the group into the meeting room and took a seat on a couch along one wall, with King Petros beside him. This was what the King had come here for, and the fact that nobody in this group recognized him was not lost on him.

Wolfe had picked people that would speak freely in front of their King, thinking that he was just some powerful friend of the local Saint.

If he had introduced himself and then asked, they would have lied and told him how wonderful it was to have this honour, and some nonsense about how they were looking forward to going home to show off their skills.

That didn’t help him at all, and Petros was hoping that they could get through all these talks without anyone realizing that he was the new King of the Fallen Empire, or the Risen King, as he had chosen to title his reign.

The first up was the lone human, who looked longingly at his book, and clearly didn’t want to spend much time here if he could avoid it.

“How has your time at the Academy been? Is there anything you would like to suggest?” Wolfe began, getting right to the point.

“They close the library at midnight, but my first class isn’t until eight in the morning. A few more hours of reading time would be nice.

The dorm rooms are small, and the sitting rooms in the dorms are too loud, with people playing games and talking, so I like the Library better.” He explained.

“That makes sense, but you do know that the Dorm Mothers recommend eight hours of sleep every night.” Wolfe reminded him.

The boy waved off the concern, and looked down at the book in his hands. “There isn’t nearly enough time for all that. Have you seen the Library? There are thousands of books that I have never seen before, just about magic. And then there is history, tactics, warfare, technology, Artificing…” He trailed off at the end, while the other students tried not to laugh at him.

“You are a very dedicated student, and that is commendable. I will see what we can do to adjust the Library schedule, but it might not get changed right away. The Academy will listen to my suggestion, but ultimately, they do what they think is right for the students. Perhaps you could speak with one of your professors about alternate study areas for the overnight hours?” Wolfe suggested.

The boy sighed. “They told me the same thing as the Dorm Mother, that I needed my sleep before class.”

“Well, I can see that we’re keeping you from your reading, and today will be very loud and chaotic, so I won’t keep you any longer.” Wolfe replied, letting the boy off the hook.

“Thank you, Saint Noxus.”

The boy nearly ran away from the room once he was dismissed, and Wolfe turned to the young couple.

“I might as well question you two at the same time, since you’re attached at the tails. Are there any suggestions that you would like to make? No matter what they are, I will listen to them and pass them on.”

The pair looked quite serious for a moment as they considered it, before the young man took out a note from his pocket.

“This is my class schedule. Now, I have classes from eight until noon, and then two until five. After that, I usually spend an hour or two in the study hall before going back to the dorms for dinner, or out to a restaurant with Kelly.

But there is so much to learn that I’m already falling behind on the syllabus that was passed out at the start of the year, and I don’t know what I’m going to do at exam time.

Nobody has openly spoken about it yet, but a lot of us are concerned that we will have to spend our breaks in remedial courses to keep up with the workload instead of taking on part-time jobs to make some money to send home.”

“So, there is a lot of concern for your family at home, and not a lot of time for working to earn? That is your primary concern?” Wolfe asked.

The boy nodded. “I was raised by a single mother, as my father is unknown. She’s a scullery maid for the Duke, and while that gives us a place to live, it’s not much of a living for a mother with two kids, you know?

My brother is much younger than I am, and presented as a bear, so we have a good guess who his father is, but only within a group of four bear kin who work at the estate.”

That boy’s mother got around. It was common for rabbits, but he appeared to be a cat type beastkin, and they were usually very picky about mates.

Wolfe considered the issue for a while.

“I will speak to the Mages and see to it that the breaks are not taken up with remedial courses, except for those who want them.

You might have to retake some courses, or be moved into an intermediate course that isn’t as advanced as the regular path, but it shouldn’t be hard to guarantee that the students can have their breaks.

I know that many of you also work on the weekends, despite the protests of the Mages, who would prefer that you were studying.

Or perhaps this is an issue of the stipend? We provide enough for the students, but that is just for a comfortable life as a student. I suspect you’ve been sending it home?”

The boy and his girlfriend both nodded. “Almost everyone does. There are a few who don’t get along with their family, or whose family holds better positions in the household, but the rest of us transfer our money home and eat all our meals in the Dorm cafeteria unless we’re working.”

“Wolfe nodded, and King Petros looked deep in thought. These were concerns of the lowest paid members of the household, and sending their kids away to school wasn’t something that was ever done, so this had never been a concern before.

Of course, the kids had never had any money to send home before either, so he was in all new territory.

“I will sort that out on my end.” Petros informed Wolfe, who nodded in agreement. That would make things easier, as they would be getting local currency.

“Alright, you two can go. And that brings us to our final pair.” Wolfe announced.
