Chapter 1025: 1025 Entrenched Businesses
Wolfe gave Ella a kiss on the forehead as he crawled over her to get out of bed the next morning, replacing himself with Cassie in her arms so that he could get to work.
They were bringing the last of the vendors over this morning, and King Petros wanted to be in attendance to see how everyone was settling in, now that the beastkin students had a few weeks at the Academy.
But at the same time, the Continental Representatives were on their way over to see how their own local vendors were doing, and making certain that the new layout of the city didn’t favour one of them over the others.
They were always in competition, though it was generally a friendly one with low stakes, as they would help each other out in times of shortage. That didn’t make it any less of a competition, and they were keeping a tally of who was doing the best to get their Continent toward the goals they had set.
They all showed up seconds apart once Wolfe let them know that he was awake and out of bed. It turned the garden suddenly crowded, despite the early hour of the morning, but the merchants had been arriving all night, thanks to the time zone differences between the other continents, and their locations in the Fallen Empire.
It made the evening celebrations especially lively, a fitting state for Forest Grove to be in, at least to Wolfe’s mind.
A city with nightlife was a city worth returning to. In the Morgana Fortress, he could tell how well a neighbourhood was doing by how much of it was open after the lights went down for the night. If they had money to spare, the clubs, restaurants, casinos and shops would be open late into the night. But if they were all broke, they would close up at lights out to save on the power bill, as there weren’t enough customers to keep them open.
“King Petros, Representatives, it is good to see you all this morning. Did you want to just wander the city to check on your people, or should we get a bite to eat first?” Wolfe asked.
“No need to trouble yourself. We will just visit the city and see how they’re settling in.” Saint Gregor, the Fae Representative for the Mist Continent, replied smoothly.
He was already looking at the vendor stalls, so he would likely eat anyhow, but he didn’t want it to get all formal.
The others nodded along. “Yes, that is good. You can escort King Petros, since the dorms are off limits to outsiders, and I’m certain he wants to check on his people.”
Petros looked concerned. “The dorms are off limits?”
Wolfe nodded. “They’re children. Of course, there are caretakers in the dorms with them, but outsiders are not allowed in the dorm without an escort from the staff.
It keeps the kids safe. Plus, it prevents parents from showing up to pressure or punish their children. We don’t ask what their home life was like unless it becomes an issue, so blanket prevention is easiest.”
Petros nodded in understanding. The beastkin weren’t that young, and most of them had already started an apprenticeship, but that would involve living with a guardian, which they didn’t do at the Academy. With the Dorms being away from the tower itself, they wouldn’t have a full staff of teachers to watch over them like a residential Academy would, and that alone would mean an increased need for security.
Those kids were a precious resource to his world, even if their social status was not particularly high.
Wolfe led him down the elevated walkways, greeting people as he went, including a number of the craftsmen who had come from the Fallen Empire.
After the seminars on Artificing, Wolfe found that he already knew many of the people who wanted to come work here, as they were the members of the advanced class, who were from the lower Noble ranks, and lacked the access to raw materials to help their craft grow.
But here in Forest Grove, they could commission all the gems and precious metals that they needed for a reasonable price, and finally showcase the skills that they had been working to perfect.
“Why does it feel like you know more of my people than I do, when they grew up in the same city I’m from?” Petros muttered as a young blacksmith greeted Wolfe on his way to work.
“I think it’s a generation gap thing. You were friends with most of their parents. That boy is Duke Westeros’ nephew.” Wolfe explained.
Petros nodded in understanding. The Duke’s brother was the epitome of unambitious, and he worked for the Duke as head of the household guard. That let him and his family continue to live in the Ducal family household without moving out to an estate of their own, and left him only responsible for the security of the property.
It was natural that his son had never shown up on the high society radar, despite being from a family of powerful magic users, as he was treated more like a servant’s promising child than a potential inheritor of the Ducal Estate.
Petros naturally knew the situation from the gossip, but he hadn’t met the boy in person before now.
They were crossing the last bridge to the Academy Dorms when an older student ran up to hug Wolfe from behind.
“Mister Wolfe, Mister Wolfe. Good morning. Are you going to come see our classes today?” She asked, her long droopy canine ears perking up a little in excitement.
“I’m afraid not. I have to help the last round of newcomers get set up in the city. What are you up to today? I heard there are no classes, but the existing students were helping welcome newcomers.” Wolfe replied.
“Yep, starting in two hours. I went out for an early run. But you should come back to the Dorms, everyone will be happy to see you and the King.” She replied.
King Petros smiled at her. “What is your name, young lady?”
“I’m Kesteros, from the household of Baron Norma.” She replied politely, with a little curtsy that looked odd with her already short skirt.
