Chapter 1016: 1016 Industrial Revolution 3.0
The Demons stared at the small golden statues of Wolfe, looking dapper in his suit, and blinked slowly, then began to laugh as the fact that he really had followed through with the joke and made permanent statues for them to display sunk in past the shock of the fact that he had no shame at all.
“You can still put it in the foyer if you like, or you can place it in the treasure room.” Wolfe joked as the Incubus examined the statue with wonder.
It was a marvel of magical engineering to split the spell focus into so many parts, but for the witches, who were used to working as a Coven, it was second nature to do things that way. No one Witch in the Coven should be overburdened, so they were used to splitting high intensity magical workloads.
“These are actually beautiful. Whoever created them is quite the artist.” Galrog commented, the statue looking tiny in his massive hand.
“It was a collaborative effort between the two of us as we finished the spell. We thought that it might be best if it was at least recognizable, so that if one of them happened to go missing, it would be easy to send out a search party for it.” Cassie explained.
The Wrathbringer nodded. “That makes a lot of sense. Everyone who enters our homes will feel the power of them if they’re on display. It’s subtle, maybe Rank Two? But it has a feeling of comfort and enormity, like the entire nation is tied to the statue, and it is protecting us all.”
Ella smiled. “That’s actually a fairly good description of what it does. We tied the entire spell together, so all of Gormana is included in the Garden Charm, and the statues are all tied together, as a protective layer for the land, helping it grow and recover from the damage that has been done to it over the years as the people struggled to survive.
But most importantly, we need to get these power plants online today, or we’re going to miss the events planned for tonight, and that will just give them an excuse to plan even more days of official events.
We promised the people at home that we would be back in a timely manner, and that didn’t include a week-long series of meetings and dinners here in Gormana.”
Galrog smiled back at her. “While we do have good dinners, I understand that you are all very busy people, with both a festival and a pentacle selection coming up. How is that going to work out, by the way? Are you really going to let others pick your advisors?”
Wolfe chuckled. “Not quite. I am going to take the reports of the thirty candidates back to my room, look them over to ensure that I didn’t misjudge anyone who turned out to be a snake when they thought nobody was watching, and then I will promptly discard them all and pick my favourite ten.”
The Demon gave him a skeptical look.
“Fine, I will discard the reports, and then I will likely end up picking Cassie and Ella’s favourite ten. But that’s usually the same thing, as we’ve got fairly similar tastes and opinions on people.
I was accused of treating Princesses like trading cards, collecting them everywhere I went in the Demon Realms, so I’m doing my best to keep an open mind about everyone this time around. I saw many promising personalities in both groups, and I like interesting people.” Wolfe amended.
“Alright, we will trust your judgment. We just don’t want those tricky Fae to mess with you, and send some subversive agents in to mess up your plans.” Galrog agreed.
The distrust between the Demons and Fae ran deep, and even though they were working together on this world, they were still in competition, and there was only enough trust going around to say that they were confident the other side wouldn’t sabotage the entire world to claim a victory over them.
With the first statue safely on display in a glass case by the door of the manor, Wolfe took the group into the air, and headed for the first power plant.
It was a simple coal plant, as were most of them, and identical in pattern to the last one he had upgraded, though this one didn’t have the material feed chutes upgraded for burning wood and other biomass, as it had been shuttered years earlier.
It was all cleaned now, so after double-checking that nobody was in the furnaces for any last-minute maintenance or cleaning, Wolfe got to work.
“Do we have a phone or a radio to contact them? I want to make sure all the switches are off before I finish the spells, then they can bring the plant online.” Wolfe announced as he prepared to finalize his spells.
Hassan held up his phone, and put it on speaker, so everyone could hear.
[Yes, sir. We have all the power switches in the standby mode, and we are ready when you are.] The woman on the other side of the call was saying.
Wolfe finished the spells, bringing the boiler up to temperature, and gave the Incubus a thumbs up.
[Go ahead and begin the power up sequence. Your coolant should be coming up to operating temperature now, and the spells are in place.] Hassan informed her happily, nearly singing the words.
The coolant tower began to steam a few seconds later as the vent fans came online, ensuring that the radiators weren’t coated in dust, and ten seconds later, electricity arced as the mechanical switches were closed, connecting the power plant to the grid for the first time in years.
[All readings are within range. Power output is 450 Megawatts constant, the plant is now feeding the grid.] Everyone could hear the happy tears as the operator’s voice cracked, then Hassan ended the call as Wolfe raced off toward their next stop.
That was their routine all day long, Hassan called, they got a very excited plant operator on the other end, waiting for their call, and then they either cried or began cheering hysterically as the plant came online.
Only once did they have to pause to get someone out of the operating areas of the plant, and that turned out to be a transient who had made a home in the decommissioned furnaces, and had sneaked back in after they were cleaned.
