Blanche stood frozen in place, stunned by the scene before her. Fort and Francis, however, rushed forward without thinking.

But someone was even faster—Alan.

As Old Gayle’s mangled body slowly descended, Alan reached out with his hands—not particularly large or broad—and gently caught him from behind, easing him down to the ground.

Francis’s eyes instantly turned red. The usual mischief in his face vanished as he dropped to his knees, voice trembling with grief. “Old drunkard… open your eyes and look at me, dammit!”

“Aren’t you a Legendary Mage? Didn’t you boast about being number one under the heavens?! How the hell did you end up like this?!”

Fort clenched his fists, the metallic glow on his body gleaming more fiercely than ever before—and even showing signs of evolving into silver.

Alan said nothing. He simply stared at the terrifying wounds riddling Old Gayle’s body. His heart felt as if someone had torn a piece of it away.

It didn’t hurt as much as when Isabella left… but the pain was just as real, just as soul-crushing.

“Cough… cough…”

In Alan’s arms, Old Gayle coughed up several mouthfuls of dark blood and slowly opened his eyes.

His gaze passed over his three students, and then lingered on Blanche, who was crying uncontrollably a few paces away. His voice was hoarse as he rasped, “I’m old now… useless… Alan… Blanche… Francis… and Fort… you must live. Sirius must not… end here…”

“Stop talking! Please, I’m begging you, stop talking!” Francis threw himself forward and clutched Old Gayle’s bloodstained hand. “I’ll behave, okay? I swear I’ll start taking training seriously! I’ll be proud to call myself a student of Sirius Academy! So please, don’t die! You can’t die! Who’s going to yell at me every morning? Who’s going to make me run a hundred laps a day?! You can’t die, old drunkard, you just can’t!”

Hearing Francis’s words, Alan felt a sharp, unspeakable sting deep in his chest.

He took a deep breath and focused his mind, sensing the remaining energy of the Stone of Sage within his body.

“My vital energy’s recovered a bit… not enough to fully heal the headmaster, but… maybe enough to keep him alive!”

With that thought, Alan immediately poured out every drop of his recovered vital energy, trying to inject it into Old Gayle’s body.

But strangely, after circulating briefly through the headmaster’s body, all of the vital energy returned to Alan’s hands.

Alan froze, confused.

Old Gayle, barely conscious, met his gaze and whispered, “No… it’s alright. I’ve been living on borrowed time. You keep it… save it for yourself.”

He paused for a breath, then raised a trembling hand and patted Alan’s shoulder, his voice filled with remorse. “I’m sorry… Alan. And the rest of you too. I promised I’d protect you all… but today, I… I’ve failed you.”

“No, you haven’t!” Alan shouted, tears spilling down his face. He clutched the hand on his shoulder tightly. “You’ve done everything a headmaster should. You’re the best headmaster I’ve ever known!”

Old Gayle’s lips curled into a faint, blood-stained smile. “Heh heh… cough… cough…”

To him, those words were the highest honor.

In life, most people chased two things—fame and fortune.

He had long since let go of fortune. But thanks to his student’s heartfelt praise, he could still hold on to the honor of his name… the legacy of being Sirius Academy’s headmaster.

“Listen closely, Alan…” Old Gayle summoned his final strength to speak his last words.

“After I’m gone… you must carry the banner of Sirius… You’re the new headmaster now…”

“And if you can… go to the Astla Sacred Realm… find the Sigma Family… and tell them I’m sorry…”

“Sigma… he was my mentor… and the only person I’ve ever truly wronged.”

“I will. I promise!” Alan tightened his grip on Old Gayle’s hand.

But just then, Old Gayle gently pushed him away.

In the next instant, Alan, Francis, Fort, and Blanche were swept up by an invisible force—and in a flash, they were teleported to a distant plain, dozens of kilometers from the capital.

Back above the capital, a colossal fireball—so large it seemed to blot out the sky—tore through the clouds and descended rapidly toward the earth.

Anything flammable within the imperial capital, even water sources, instantly vaporized.

The uninvited guests who had hidden themselves within the clouds were caught in the blazing heat and light of this miniature sun. Many died on the spot; others were gravely wounded.

No one was more shocked than the elder from NK Kingdom. His mouth hung open as he stared at the dying Old Gayle, lying motionless on the ground.

“You lunatic… Just to save Alan, you’re dragging the entire capital down with you?!”

Old Gayle smiled faintly.

“Nonsense. I’m not like you animals—I don’t kill the innocent. I already teleported all the citizens out of the capital. Everyone left behind here… they deserve what’s coming.”

As he spoke, the figures of Daniel and Emperor Denken appeared behind him.

Both wore complicated expressions. It was clear they wanted to stop him, to say something. But they knew—it was already too late. No matter what they said now, Gayle wouldn’t listen.

“You’re here…” Gayle murmured, as if he’d expected them.

Without turning his head, he gave his final request. “You two… take care of the kids for me. Just… consider it this old drunk’s last wish.”

Beneath their feet, teleportation arrays lit up.

In a blink, Daniel and Emperor Denken were transported to the same plain where Alan and the others had landed.

And then—

BOOM.

The miniature sun plummeted down and struck the capital.

The explosion was like the simultaneous eruption of ten supervolcanoes.

The elder from NK Kingdom, realizing he had been marked as the target, grabbed the silver-haired youth and bolted like a madman toward the distant horizon.

He was powerful—yes—but even he didn’t dare face a self-sacrificing blow from a Legendary Mage at their absolute limit.

In an instant, the entire imperial capital of Plantagenet Kingdom was reduced to scorched ruins.

And yet, strangely—not a single innocent civilian was harmed.

Later, when the Royal Guard returned to clean up the area, they found only a few charred corpses.

Based on their physiques and equipment, it was clear—they were outsiders.

Those very same uninvited guests who had once lurked in the clouds… waiting to ambush Alan.

But for now, the people outside this chaos still had no idea what had just occurred.

Daniel stood silently, staring at the still-burning ruins of the once-proud city. His heart was filled with a torrent of conflicting emotions.

He remembered something an old senior once told him:

“Everything you possess will one day vanish like smoke.”

Now, Daniel finally understood what those words truly meant.

After a long silence, the archbishop turned to Alan and spoke softly—

“Come back to the Church with me…”
