I’m the Only One Who Can’t See Ghosts

Chapter 102: The Middle School of Storm (5)

Psychics generally disregarded technology. To them, technology = mundane skills, mundane = lowly, and therefore, technology = lowly skills. This mindset was deeply ingrained.

But Jamsuni didn’t think that way. Jamsuni was a firm believer in technology—enough to buy functional men’s underwear.

That’s why she had no qualms about using a listening device. Of course, a typical middle schooler might have worried about the legal implications, but Jamsuni wasn’t a typical middle schooler, so such concerns were irrelevant to her.

Perhaps Jamsuni wasn’t on the level of a world government.

However, she was undoubtedly on the level of national authority—a middle school girl with state-level power. And a middle school girl of her caliber could not be restrained by juvenile law.

With such disregard for trivial laws, Jamsuni played back the recorded sounds from the school.

“Hey, what was yesterday’s homework—”

“Teacher Hyejoo, when will you have the materials I requested—”

“Are you insane? I mean, because of that jerk—”

Jamsuni quickly skipped through the unnecessary chatter.

Students’ casual banter, the sound of desks being dragged, the noises coming from an empty bathroom.

“...?”

Teachers conducting classes, the school bell signaling the start of lessons, and the sounds of club activities.

“...!”

Amid the recordings, Jamsuni pinpointed two peculiar sounds. The first came from the empty bathroom.

The sound of water droplets falling.

The sound of something crawling.

And then a voice, whispering:

-“Keep the contract.”

Hearing the voice, Jamsuni smiled brightly.

“So even a ‘Sodo’ is nothing more than a peculiar spiritual vein. Besides, I haven’t broken the contract yet, have I?”

From a spiritual perspective, spiritual veins and anomalies weren’t so different. Both lacked foundational origins and were merely composed of information.

Jamsuni could sense the malice emanating from the ‘Sodo’ vein. The fact that it responded to her listening device like this—it wasn’t much different from an anomaly, was it?

-“No, spiritual veins are the earth’s arteries, governed by the heavens, so they differ from anomalies.”

But that wasn’t the issue at hand.

Jamsuni deleted the bathroom recording file and played the next one. This time, it was a recording of the club activities.

Na Jooyeon voice came through.

“Did you get close to her?”

“She’s cautious, so I haven’t been able to get very close yet Miss.”

Na Jooyeon was talking to a girl referred to as “Miss”. A Miss? Jamsuni recognized the voice of this so-called Miss.

It was Cheon Siyeon, the granddaughter of Elder Cheon Seong-moon, who owned the Changseong Foundation, which operated Changseong Middle School.

“She’s a first-year too, isn’t she?”

On top of that, she was a psychic with a unique ability. However, her spiritual quality was low, and her proficiency wasn’t high enough to gain admission to the Cheonji Academy.

And yet, Na Jooyeon addressed this Cheon Siyeon as “Miss.”

Jamsuni focused on the ongoing recording.

“What? You haven’t gotten close yet? Do you call that an excuse?”

“I-I’m sorry.”

“Can’t you see she’s just a lonely kid crying out for friends? You’re not taking this seriously, are you? Grab her.”

Who was she calling a lonely kid? If it weren’t for Yoo Hajin’s request, she wouldn’t have even considered making friends.

As Jamsuni clenched her fist, a ghostly wail echoed through the surrounding slum. But Jamsuni didn’t hear it; she was too focused on Na Jooyeon’s groans.

“Ugh, Miss, I’m sorry, please stop.”

From the lack of physical sounds, it seemed Na Jooyeon was being beaten with psychic energy. Jamsuni listened to the scene unfold with a detached expression.

“My dear Juyeon, have I been too lenient with you lately? Should I remind you of last year?”

“I’m sorry. I-I’m truly sorry.”

Slap!

The sound of someone being slapped rang out.

Naturally, it was likely Na Jooyeon being slapped.

“Ugh, those slow-moving idiots are so frustrating. You guys have no idea how pure the spiritual energy flowing through that kid’s body is.”

Who was she calling “that kid”?

Unconsciously, Jamsuni took out a carton of milk from the fridge.

“If I could just have that spiritual energy, even I could get into the Cheonji Academy. And then, would I repay you guys or not? For heaven’s sake, try using your brains, you idiots.”

Cheon Siyeon’s words continued.

“Na Jooyeon, before the formation is complete, make sure that kid can’t live without you. To extract her energy, we’ll need her cooperation. So, lure her in and have her join our paranormal club.”

Slap—

And then, another sharp slap echoed.

“Not going to answer, you orphan brat? Do you have a death wish?”

“Y-yes, yes. I’ll get closer to her.”

“I’ll be watching. Do it properly.”

The recording ended there.

Jamsuni, her lips smeared with white milk, muttered to herself.

“How should I deal with this? If I use my powers, they’ll figure out who am I.”

And then the Sodo would impose a penalty for interfering with her past.

Of course, whatever penalty the Sodo imposed would only be a nuisance, not a major issue. After all, no matter how powerful the Sodo might be, it couldn’t take her memories unless it was on the same level as an Eternal Being. This wasn’t speculation—it was a certainty. But surely the Sodo wasn’t unaware of this either.

Most likely, it would impose some other penalty instead of taking her memories.

Jamsuni, deep in thought.

As she pondered, Nayu, who had been quietly watching her, made a remark.

“Milk is no alcohol.”

“Who doesn’t know that?! You—you can’t even avenge your dead family, you useless brat!”

“N-Nayu shocked! Nayu tear drop! Nayu tattles on Kim Sojin!!!”

Whoosh!

Nayu dashed off toward Yoo Hajin’s house, leaving Jamsuni with a sigh.

“Ugh.”

Surely Nayu wouldn’t spill her past.

Growing uneasy, Jamsuni slipped on her slippers.

“Whenever I try to live a normal life, the past chases me, and the future crushes me.”

A soul is divided into information and non-information.

And most of that informational soul consisted of a person’s memories.

And those memories were, in essence, their past.

Kim Sojin, the Eternal Being, feared her own soul.

****

“Keep Your Friends Close and Your Enemies Closer.”

That was a line from a mafia movie.

Jamsuni thought it was accurate.

So, she made an effort to grow closer to Na Jooyeon.

They went to a snack bar together.

“Hmm, this tteokbokki is about 0.8 Yoo Hajins,” Jamsuni remarked.

“What even is a Yoo Hajin?”

“Don’t bother trying to understand. I’ll kill you.”

“I was thinking of ordering fish cakes too. Want to share? This is my first time coming to a place like this with a friend.”

“...Order it if you want to eat it.”

They went to the movies.

“Ugh, melodramatic nonsense. What a snooze fest,” Jamsuni commented.

“Sniff, sniff?”

“...Almost said that. Wipe your face. What’s with all the snot?”

On their way home, they came across some stray cats.

“Wow, these kittens are so, so cute!” Na Jooyeon squealed.

“Your tone is seriously annoying. Try this instead: ‘These fluffy pests are adorable.’”

“Fluffy... pests? That’s so mean! They are cats”

“Hah, Na Jooyeon, are you already showing signs of becoming a crazy cat lady? Tsk, tsk.”

Laughing, the two girls petted the cats.

And on a rainy day, they shared an umbrella on their way home.

“I don’t need an umbrella,” Jamsuni grumbled.

“Yes, you do. What if you catch a cold, being smaller than me and all?”

“What? Did you just say my chest is so flat it could be used as a scrubbing board? Na Jooyeon, do you have a death wish?”

“I didn’t even say that!”

The two girls walked side by side, close together, down the rainy road.

“I’ll walk you to the bus stop.”

“That’s the opposite direction from your house.”

“Yeah, I know. My house is over there.”

Na Jooyeon finger pointed toward a building on the opposite side of the street. It was a childcare facility run by the Changseong Foundation

.

“The Changseong Orphanage?”

“Yeah, I live there.”

Squish squish—Tap tap—

The sound of rain accompanied the girl’s voice as it echoed softly.

“The kids who are sent there are raised to work for the Changseong Foundation from a young age. So if I wanted to make friends, I had to make them within the orphanage. But, guess what? When I was there, there weren’t any girls my age. Just older sisters way above my age.”

Na Jooyeon said this with an embarrassed expression.

“What did you call me when we first met? ‘loser’? Yeah, you were right. I really was a loser.”

“Quite the brag.”

“And that’s why you’re my first friend.”

“...”

Before they realized it, the two girls had arrived at the bus stop.

The girl known as Na Jooyeon smiled and said,

“Goodbye, Sojin.”

***

Jamsuni lay quietly, listening to the recorded audio.

“We’re finally ready, Jooyeon.”

“Yes.”

“Bring the sacrifice tomorrow. Persuade them nicely. Say something like it’s a spiritual experience. The ritual requires the help of the sacrifice.”

Click.

Kim Sojin turned off the recording.

Why?

Her heart felt heavy.

The tteokbokki they had shared—

The movie they had watched together—

The cats they had petted together—

All of it came to mind.

Kim Sojin, the Eternal Being, didn’t give a name to this feeling.

This feeling, she was certain, wasn’t necessary for destroying her enemies. Kim Sojin treated it as though it didn’t exist, burying it with memories of her past.

“I’ll destroy them both without using my powers. Modify the ritual to make Na Jooyeon the sacrifice and use its effects to annihilate Cheon Siyeon. People will think Jooyeon, abused by Siyeon, altered the ritual for revenge. It’s a clean conclusion.”

The girl knew only endings of death and destruction.

***

The Next Morning:

Kim Sojin greeted Na Jooyeon as if nothing had happened.

“Hi.”

But Na Jooyeon didn’t respond.

“Hey, don’t talk to me,” she said.

Na Jooyeon continued, “Do you think just because I played with you a little, I’m the same kind of loser as you? Honestly, it was annoying how you kept spouting nonsense I couldn’t even understand.”

She smiled as she added, “Don’t even think about following me anymore. Oh, and by the way, you’re totally screwed. The Paranormal Club, which basically runs this school, has its eyes on you now. Especially Cheon Siyeon, the psychic delinquent—she’s planning to deal with you personally. If you want to survive, I’d suggest transferring schools.”

Thud.

Na Jooyeon pushed Kim Sojin aside and said,

“So just... get out of my sight already, you loser.”

With that, Na Jooyeon walked out into the hallway.

Kim Sojin could only stand there, frozen. She stared at the door leading to the hallway Na Jooyeon had just exited, unable to hide the shock on her face.
