Book 6: Chapter 2: The Land of Divine Death
There were five great devils in total, with different appearances and abilities.
Except for their shared height of several hundred feet, the five great devils did not look like creatures of the same race at all.
They walked back and forth around the entrance to the Land of Divine Death, something which seemed to be patrolling.
“They are at the entrance of the place where the gods died.”
“It seems that the relationship between the devils and the gods is very superficial,” Wise Immortal said.
Noticing one of the devils, who had countless blood-red eyes all over his body, looking at them, Bai Qiuran quickly pulled Li Jinyao away, hiding in a gap in a mountain range.
Seeing these monsters with a height of hundreds of meters, their heads against the sky along with their terrifying auras, Li Jinyao’s face turned pale. In a low voice she asked
“Senior Sword Patriarch, what are these things?”
“These are the great devils of the devil race.”
Bai Qiuran poked his head out slightly to observe the movements of these great devils.
“Is that the devil race?”
“One of the mortal enemies of the human race...” Li Jinyao murmured. “The monster that almost destroyed Nine Provinces and Ten Lands. I’ve only seen it referenced in books before, but today when seeing them with my eyes, it is really terrifying.”
After that, she patted her face, and took a few deep breaths, actually suppressing the shock and calming her mind. Her resolute concentration stunned Bai Qiuran a little.
“But, this is also the first time I have seen the five great devils gather together, yet they haven’t started fighting.”
Bai Qiuran watched one of the wolf-headed great devils walk to the edge of a nearby mountain range, stretching out its claws to grab a barren beast from the mountain range to devour it.
“When the devils invaded and attacked in the past,” he said, “the great devils usually competed with each other for territory and even directly conflicted. In the early years of the Great Cang calendar, the monks were basically fighting against them. What is the power that allows these great devils to coexist peacefully here?”
While he spoke, he took Wise Immortal from his belt, raising the skull to face the five great devils.
“Wise Immortal,” he said, “take a look, is there any way to get in?”
Wise Immortal took a look.
“It doesn’t seem feasible to sneak in by stealth,” he replied. “See the great devil with a thousand eyes and the great devil with no eyes stand beside him? One has excellent eyesight while the other has super hearing. When they combine their abilities, even if we hide in space rifts, they will also be able to sense us as well... Old Bai, with 10% of your strength, how many great devils can you kill instantly?”
“I haven’t tried, but one or two should still be possible.”
Bai Qiuran replied after thinking about it.
“That’s good, did you see the great devil with tentacles on its head?”
Wise Immortal instructed.
Bai Qiuran looked towards the great devil and found that at the farthest point was the great devil that Wise Immortal was referring to. Unlike the other great devils standing and patrolling back and forth, it was sitting, leaning on a mountain. Two long, sleek claws were resting on his knees.
It had only one eye, with a vertical pupil on its head, but it was covered with soft tentacles, and the tips were pink spherical fleshy balls.
“That’s a transmitting antenna. Its ability is a kind of near-instant telekinetic communication. If it were to invade, it would send a message to attract other devils or call great devils in the vicinity to come as reinforcements. If you want to break in, you must solve this first. Its weakness is in the abdomen.”
“Understood.”
Bai Qiuran realized that having Wise Immortal really helped him a lot. All great devils possess very terrifying physical resilience, and some are even comparable to him.
Without hitting their vital point, these great devils could recover in just a few seconds, even if their bodies were broken and torn into pieces.
But with Wise Immortal pointing to the vital points, it became very easy for Bai Qiuran to kill them instantly.
“Miss Li, please wait here for a while.”
Bai Qiuran turned his head and said to Li Jinyao.
“Ok.”
Li Jinyao nodded lightly, sitting down on the spot, hidden behind a stone.
Seeing her safely hidden, Bai Qiuran silently went around, arriving at the position closest to the big tentacled antenna monster.
Seizing the moment when all four other great devils turned around, Bai Qiuran’s figure flickered, and in the blink of an eye, he appeared in front of the great devil and slapped it.
In a golden ring-mounted shock wave, Bai Qiuran’s surging Qi turned into a golden beam of light, and banged against the abdomen of the great devil with a bang, blasting its upper and lower body completely apart.
Its weakness shattered, the vertical pupil of this great devil immediately dimmed, and the huge upper body fell to the ground, splashing up huge dust, and losing the breath of life.
The sudden change disturbed the other four great devils. They roared and attacked Bai Qiuran together. The wolf-headed great devil’s mouth spat wind, while the whole body of the thousand-eyed devil gave out a powerful magic red light. The great devil with no eyes uttered terrible sound waves from the hollow mouth covered with a layer of skin, while the great devil with snakehead spewed venom like rain.
Facing these terrifying attacks, Bai Qiuran smiled confidently and drew a longsword.
A few seconds later, with the loud noise of something big falling onto the ground, several incomplete huge body parts fell onto the nearby wilderness. Bai Qiuran threw away the iron sword with only the hilt in his hand and returned to his original hiding place.
“Senior Sword Patriarch’s strength is truly the best in the past and present.”
The little girl’s eyes were full of respect and she said with a tone of admiration.
“Ahem, Miss Li has praised me too much.”
Bai Qiuran touched his nose and said.
He was able to say a lot of shameless things when around his apprentice and others close to him, but when faced with such sincere praise from Li Jinyao, Bai Qiuran was a little embarrassed.
With Li Jinyao, Bai Qiuran followed the instructions of Wise Immortal and successfully found the entrance to the Land of Divine Death guarded by the great devils.
Looking at the small stream in front of him and a small canoe tied to a tree with twine, Bai Qiuran blinked, asking Wise Immortal.
“Are you sure this is the entrance to the Land of Divine Death?”
“Of course I am sure unless there’s something wrong with the Great Wisdom given to me by Heaven.”
Wise Immortal replied confidently.
“Why do I feel as if it’s not impressive...”
Bai Qiuran looked at the stream in front of him with a melancholy feeling in his heart.
“Whether it is impressive or not, you will know when you get on the boat and paddle in.”
Wise Immortal said.
“Alright.”
Bai Qiuran took Li Jinyao into the boat. After untying the twine, he reached out to grab the oars, but Wise Immortal shouted.
“Wait, this ship needs True Qi to move, so don’t touch that, otherwise we may fall into some strange space later.”
Bai Qiuran looked at Li Jinyao who was opposite of him and wanted to curse, but after remembering that his hope of breaking through the foundation building was here, he had to hold back forcibly and handed the oar to Li Jinyao.
Li Jinyao seemed very happy to be able to help him. She happily took the oars, and then paddled the boat, following the direction of the stream, towards the valley.
