Bai Suixin took the name list and said, “What’s not to like? In this Heavenly Prison, I’m the senior among my brothers, so my word is law.”

Hao Siyu said, “Ancestor, you hold the position of warden, specifically responsible for the custody and transfer of prisoners; it’s only right that you should look at this name list.”

“Let’s take a look then.”

Sun Changsheng took the name list and his Divine Sense swept over it, he exclaimed in surprise, “The Heavenly Prison is actually holding nearly a hundred thousand criminals?”

“Dongsheng Divine Continent is vast and boundless, with countless living beings; a hundred thousand criminals is truly not many.”

Bai Suixin said, “Back when I was in charge, we had up to a million criminals at most, and their crimes were much more severe than now. They were lined up for execution at the Immortal Slaying Stage, and it would have taken ten years to finish them all!”

The Heavenly Prison is different from the mortal world, having many layers of Formation and Prohibition set up.

To prevent prisoners from confusing the jailers, not a shred of mana, voice, or Divine Sense could be transmitted out.

Standing outside the prison, one could see the appearance and actions of the prisoners, but those trapped inside could not see any light, completely sealed off in the pitch-black chaos of a cave where one can’t see their own fingers.

After patrolling the layers one by one, Sun Changsheng started his role and took residence in the warden’s hall on the ground level.

“First, make good relations with my colleagues!”

With his cultivation reaching the peak of Heavenly Monarch, Sun Changsheng quickly took over the prison affairs, and then he set up a feast in the hall to entertain his colleagues from the Heavenly Prison.

Because Sun Changsheng’s seniority and cultivation were too high, his colleagues at the table were reserved and cautious with their words and drinking.

“My friends, don’t call me ancestor. Since we’re all working in the Heavenly Prison, we should discuss matters as equals!”

At the ancestor’s command, everyone agreed.

After several jars of Spiritual Wine, the atmosphere started to liven up.

Sun Changsheng inquired about the affairs of the Heavenly Prison, and the others spared no detail, revealing many unspoken rules one by one.

Colonel Niu said, “That cultivator in the Ninth Layer Prison – unable to endure the punishment of the Thunder Strike Technique – secretly told me about a hidden treasure and just like that, I got my hands on a few thousand Spirit Stones.”

“That’s nothing!”

Hao Siyu laughed and said, “Not long ago, I was making pills and needed dragon liver as a catalyst, so I just cut some from that accursed dragon in the thirteenth layer. I accidentally took too much and still haven’t finished eating it!”

Your words and mine, nearly treating the prisoners like private property.

Ordinary cultivators have to strive for what they lack; prison officials simply demand it directly from the prisoners.

Sun Changsheng wondered, “With such coercion and temptation, won’t the prisoners seek revenge after their release?”

“Fair trade, what’s there to coerce?”

Colonel Niu said, “Take that cultivator in the Ninth Layer, for instance. By law, he should suffer a hundred strikes from the Thunder Strike Technique each day. Yet, the intensity of that technique is still up for us to decide, isn’t it?”

Chen Shuli, the other assistant, chimed in, saying, “Increase the power slightly, and you can ruin a Daoist’s foundation. Decrease it a bit, and you reduce the punishment’s pain!”

“I see!”

Sun Changsheng initially wanted to inquire about obtaining essence blood; with a hundred thousand prisoners in the Heavenly Prison, if each contributed a bowl, that would make a huge Blood Pool.

Ordinary creatures nourishing the Stone Monkey surely wouldn’t be as effective as the essence blood of cultivators or demons, and perhaps it could speed up recovery.

“Just arrived in the Heavenly Court, better to be cautious. Wait until I’m more familiar with how things work before taking action.”

From that time on.

Sun Changsheng inspected the cells daily, switching the prisoners around according to the Ministry of Punishment’s orders.

Some were moved up, some down – a promotion meant a reduction in punishment, while a demotion increased it.

Even within the same layer, there were differences. For instance, one area of the Heavenly Prison’s Array Prohibition had somehow become lax, allowing prisoners not to be held in pitch-black emptiness but in an illusion filled with birdsong and floral fragrance.

The proper course would have been to call for the Ministry of Public Works officials to repair it, and before such repairs, that was the prisoner’s chance for a breath of fresh air.

Perhaps the prison Array is too complex, or perhaps the prisoners are too strong, but problems with the cells never cease.

This turned out to be a boon for the Ministry of Public Works too; they even applied for a new divine position from the emperor, specializing in repairing the Heavenly Prison’s Array, killing three birds with one stone!

“The knowledge of the Heavenly Prison is profound!”

Sun Changsheng clicked his tongue in wonder, having seen all manner of secret rules, even divinities who practiced Blood Path Secret Arts purchasing essence blood from jailers.

When not on duty, he was dining with the Righteous Gods of the Heavenly Court.

There were banquets every day, with Righteous Gods from the twelve divisions in turn inviting Sun Changsheng to drink.

One would call him ‘big senior brother,’ another would address him as ‘brother.’

Sun Changsheng deeply realized how big of a figure the Heavenly Master was in those days, and he grew even more identified with his reincarnated status.

One year later.

Finally finding some free time, Sun Changsheng rode the clouds away from the Heavenly Court, flying all the way to Qingyun Mountain and landing at Mo Cloud Cave.

“Big brother, I’m here.”

“You splashy monkey, having a blast in the Heavenly Court, I thought you’d forgotten about me,” Huang Niu’s voice transmitted.

Sun Changsheng took a step inside and saw Huang Niu burning incense and paying homage to the Heavenly Master’s spirit tablet, feeling even more that something was fishy. Helplessly, he said, “Brother Niu should know, I inexplicably became the reincarnation of some Heavenly Master.”

“Once it’s done, it’s done.”

Huang Niu inserted the incense into the burner and said, “The poor Daoist has also died once and returned to life, living quite well.”

Sun Changsheng asked doubtfully, “What if one day, I regain my memories from my previous life?”

You will not be able to!

Huang Niu complained inwardly, knowing full well that the Heavenly Master hadn’t died. To assuage him, he said, “In the poor Daoist’s view, the Heavenly Master has long perished, both in body and path. Even if you awaken your innate wisdom, it is but a gift to you.”

“At that time, you will still be you, and not the one from your last life!”

“I will heed big brother’s teachings.”

Sun Changsheng bowed respectfully, his underlying worries dissipating. He feared any change in his relationship with his big brother and reverted to his playful and cheeky behavior, strutting about the cave like a monkey.

“Big brother, when you guided me in seeking immortality, did you know about the reincarnation matter?”

Corner of Huang Niu’s mouth twitched, helplessly he said, “Perhaps, I just felt a closeness to you, I didn’t think too deeply about it.”

Sun Changsheng then asked, “Does big brother know the identity of our master?”

“I do not.”

“That individual’s status is too noble,” Huang Niu said. “Back then, the Heavenly Master also received guidance from that individual, which led to the subsequent Divine Enthronement and the Heavenly Court.”

“So it is!”

Sun Changsheng, excited, scratched his ears and cheeks, confidently proclaiming.

“Master must be a True Immortal from the higher realms; once I ascend, I will surely meet them again.”

He stayed one day at Qingyun Mountain.

Sun Changsheng returned to the Heavenly Court, entering the twelfth layer prison he had already scoped out, where a ferocious Qiongqi beast was incarcerated. He transmitted his voice through the cell, saying.

“Fellow Daoist, do you need Spirit Stones?”

The Heavenly Prison Array Prohibition, depending on cultivation level, isolated Spiritual Energy, only able to maintain current mana level. To have any increase in mana, one required the aid of Spirit Stones.

But let’s split the tale here.

Mysterious Primordial Mountain.

Zhou Yi received Huang Niu’s transmission, his expression quite strange.

“When did the poor Daoist reincarnate?”

After careful contemplation, he deduced the ins and outs of the matter.

“It must be that some returning-to-void cultivators encountered Sun Changsheng and mistook him for the poor Daoist because of the boundless karmic forces above his head.”

The reason Zhou Yi hid himself in seclusion and dared not reclaim Kunlun Cave Heaven was precisely for fear of an accidental encounter with those returning-to-void. Regardless of how exquisite the Art of Transformation was, the immeasurable karmic forces on top of one’s head could not be escaped.

“It’s a pity the poor Daoist’s cultivation isn’t sufficient; otherwise, seeing Sun Changsheng’s karmic forces, I would not dare to transmit any spells or Magic Divine Abilities to him.”

“The poor Daoist is clear about the source of his karmic forces and would not commit acts of world destruction; Sun Changsheng’s karmic forces come from his past life, but who could it be? Which unparalleled great demon’s reincarnation?”

Zhou Yi had once been the prime disciple in the Three Teachings, having seen the records of Divine Continent in the Scripture Pavilion that could trace back to the last epoch.

There were records of many demons capable of destroying heaven and earth, such as the recently mentioned Blood Devil Child, as well as the Heavenly Demon who stirred up the last great calamity, and the Earth Yin Demon God who caused the catastrophe before that, and so on…

The Cultivation World of Dongsheng Divine Continent is in its prime, and even though the demonic path is waning, every few tens of thousands of years an unparalleled demon head appears.

“Great demons from the last epoch are unlikely to return; an unparalleled being at the end of the Dharma can grind away karmic forces.”

“The Blood Devil Child, suppressed under the Demon Suppression Tower, could still live for ten thousand years; thus, it’s very likely one of the demon heads like the Heavenly Demon or the Earth Yin…”

“Which demon head’s signature ability is the Immortal Body?”

Zhou Yi thought back and forth, analyzing historical demon heads with name and fame, but none of them matched Sun Changsheng—there was too much difference in the divine abilities and spells they practiced.

“Forget it, whoever it is, has nothing to do with the poor Daoist!”

“With many True Gods in the Heavenly Court, and human immortals presiding over the Three Teachings, would they let a mere Divinity Transformation overturn the heavens?”

To ordinary cultivators, those in the Divinity Transformation Realm had a lifespan of two-thousand years and could move mountains and cross seas, existing like Buddhas, gods, and demons. Yet, in the eyes of the Heavenly Court, they were but somewhat more significant ants, easily crushable with a flick of a finger.

“Even if Sun Changsheng advances to the returning-to-void stage and serves in the Heavenly Court, under the watchful eyes of many, could he possibly turn the heavens upside down?”

No matter how Zhou Yi speculated, the advantage lay with the Heavenly Court.
