Chapter 2695: Chapter 2696: The Secret of the Laboratory

After waiting for a few minutes, they saw Stephen’s car approaching from a distance.

“Sorry to keep you waiting, Marshall is inside, let’s go in now.”

“Okay.”

With Stephen leading the way, the three of them entered the laboratory building together.

Compared to the exterior of the building, the inside appeared more ordinary, not unlike a typical independent laboratory.

Upon entering, there was a staircase on the left-hand side, but what surprised Lin Yi was that there was also a basement.

However, the entrance was locked and access was prohibited.

“Do you know this person named Marshall?”

Standing beside Li Chuhan, Lin Yi asked in a low voice.

“I looked him up yesterday. He used to be the dean of Johns Hopkins Medical School and resigned three years ago. It seems he started working here afterward.”

“A person of dean-level status working here?”

To Lin Yi, the position of a medical school dean held more prestige, income, and status than the director of a private research institute.

And worldwide, Mosli Laboratory wasn’t that famous yet.

“Perhaps they’re paying him well enough, or the research topics here are particularly appealing.”

“Which possibility do you lean towards?”

“The latter one.” Li Chuhan thought for a moment and said with a smile,

“I’m quite interested in their research myself.”

Lin Yi laughed, “If you say so, I’m even more interested in Mosli.”

Before long, the three reached the fourth floor and met with Marshall in an office inside.

The man was nearing seventy, but he looked energetic, though his legs were not very nimble.

“Hey, old friend, these are the people I’m introducing you to. This is my former student Lee, who is now an excellent cardiac surgeon, and this is her boyfriend, Mr. Lin Yi.”

“Hello, welcome to Mosli.”

Marshall extended his hand and shook hands with both of them.

After a brief introduction, the two were ushered into the office.

The conversation quickly got right to the point.

Marshall spent most of his time with Li Chuhan, asking her many professional questions.

As for Lin Yi, he seemed more like a mere accompaniment.

During the conversation, Lin Yi listened silently.

The topics mostly revolved around the field of genetics.

What surprised Lin Yi was that Li Chuhan, who had always kept a low profile, had many unique insights in this area, making the conversation very positive and engaging.

Before they knew it, they had been talking for over half an hour, and they probably would have continued talking if Stephen hadn’t interrupted.

“Lee, Mr. Lin Yi, I have already arranged your positions in advance, please follow me.”

Although Lin Yi was just a tagalong, he received the respect he deserved under Li Chuhan’s halo.

Following Marshall, they reached the third floor of the laboratory.

This was the main site of the laboratory, with over a dozen rooms of various sizes where staff were busily working away.

“Harvey!”

Marshall called out, summoning a middle-aged man in his forties.

The man was blond with blue eyes and a big beard, looking rather hearty.

“These two are new colleagues from China, and they will be joining you in the research on telomere cells.”

Harvey lazily glanced at the two, seemingly not taking them to heart.

“Okay.”

After a little more discussion, the man named Harvey took Lin Yi and Li Chuhan and introduced them to the rest of the team.

“Here is the relevant research we’ve conducted over the years. To better integrate into the team, you two can start by going through the materials.”

“Okay.”

After settling them in, Harvey left.

Lin Yi and Li Chuhan were glad to be left alone, feeling uncomfortable with an outsider present.

Where they found themselves was more like the laboratory’s archives.

There were several cabinets on both sides filled with various materials. Going through all of them would take at least a week.

“I’ll start with the materials.”

With that said, Li Chuhan focused her attention on the documents.

Lin Yi was relieved to leave it to her, as he felt overwhelmed by this amount of material, and having Li Chuhan handle it was perfect.

After more than an hour, Li Chuhan had quickly gone through over twenty pieces of material, and she might have kept going if Lin Yi hadn’t called her to lunch.

At noon, they found a restaurant to have lunch.

“How does it feel? Did you gain any insights?”

“Their research is all in the genetic field, mainly focusing on the decay and regeneration of telomere cells.”

“If I remember correctly, telomere cells on chromosomes can affect human lifespan, right?”

Li Chuhan nodded and said,

“Some years ago, there was a popular concept of eternal life in the medical world, centered around telomere cells. But in recent years, that kind of talk has subsided. I didn’t expect that they were still conducting related research.”

“The investment industry in the U.S. has reached a bottleneck, and it’s become almost impossible to see profits in the short term. Could it be that they’re purposely hyping this concept to trick investors out of their money?” Lin Yi suggested.

“Not necessarily, because within the mammalian category, humans have this unique trait, which currently has no reasonable explanation.”

“What kind of uniqueness are you referring to?”

“Studies show that mammals have roughly the same total number of heartbeats in their lifetime, around 1.1 billion. The faster the heart beats, the shorter the lifespan. Almost all mammals fit this pattern, except humans, who range between 2.5 to 3 billion, and there is no relevant research to explain this so far.”

“Are you saying that earlier humans might have conformed to this pattern, but due to some reason, genetic changes occurred, increasing the total number of heartbeats, and thereby extending lifespan?”

Li Chuhan nodded and said,

“But it’s just speculation, with no solid evidence. However, I think if we truly want to extend lifespan, or achieve so-called eternal life, the key lies in the telomeres of genetic cells; that’s where we need to start.”

“No wonder this laboratory has not gained much reputation over the years. Researching such things might take decades without any achievement.”

“Indeed, but from a scientific perspective, I still hope there are people willing to step up and do more research in this area, otherwise human thought and vision will remain limited.”

“Makes sense.”

“By the way, there’s something I forgot to tell you.” Li Chuhan set down her knife and fork and said,

“I discovered something while going through the documents.”

“What is it?”

“There’s a research project jointly undertaken by Mosli and Degeradlon Laboratory about the measurement of biological cell decay rates.”

“Degeradlon?”

“It’s an official laboratory in the U.S.”
