After Ji Qingyan took a shower, Lin Yi picked up his phone, preparing to play some games for a while.
But he played the game distractedly.
Because Christmas was just around the corner, less than a week away.
He hadn’t prepared anything, and the thought of it frustrated him.
He just quit the game and spent a while scrolling through Taobao and Goutou.
Afterwards, he found that the gifts there seemed even more frustrating, so he tossed his phone aside and began to consider what to give for Christmas.
But before long, the phone beside him rang—it was a call from Qiu Yuluo.
“Calling so late at night, is there a directive?”
“The matter in Zhong Hai, Group One should have told you, right?”
Lin Yi took a second to respond, “Are you talking about that suspect?”“Yes, that’s the one.”
Hearing this news, Lin Yi’s expression turned serious.
“I haven’t been paying attention to that, is there a problem with that person?”
“I’ve found the latest information; the individual is from Shianggang. His name is Ma Dehong, he worked at the Detrick Research Room in America ten years ago as the deputy director, but he resigned from his position three years ago and disappeared from the public eye.”
In Qiu Yuluo’s words, Lin Yi picked out the important information.
“What exactly does this De Krick Laboratory do?”
“There is no concrete evidence, but it’s very likely an organization involved in E-class serum research.”
“Gene serum…”
Lin Yi mumbled to himself, “With America’s current technological capabilities, mastering this technology shouldn’t be difficult, and Ma Dehong, as the deputy director, must have held very important information.”
“That’s true, but according to our investigation, he seems to have been active on Shianggang for the past half a year which is not a good sign.”
“But all of this is mere speculation. Even if he has been active on Shianggang, that doesn’t prove anything. Have you found anything else?”
“Nothing more, the reason for his arrest was recent unrest in Shianggang. We found an excuse to seize him for further interrogation.”
“You’re not calling to ask me to interrogate him, are you?”
“I did consider that, you’re rather skilled in these matters and should have no issue handling him.”
After a few seconds of silence, Lin Yi asked,
“What did you mean by Shianggang not being ‘Taiping’?”
“The hospital has received several cases of mysterious deaths. We had someone look into it, and the cause of death were due to bodily system overload, highly resembling deaths caused by gene serum injections.”
Hearing this message, Lin Yi’s brow furrowed.
In all of Asia, the only organization capable of researching gene serums was the Mitsui Group.
If that was indeed the reason, it would make sense to give Caie Mitsui a call to check for related leads.
“Leave this matter to me, anything else?”
“No official business, but I’ve got a personal question for you.”
“Are you on your period or did it come early, looking for me to prescribe you something?”
“Stop talking nonsense,” Qiu Yuluo said.
“Are you really not planning on undertaking missions from the Central Guards Brigade anymore?”
“For minor things, you can still count on me, but not the risky ones,” Lin Yi said with a laugh.
“What a shame, there’ll be fewer chances to fight alongside you.”
“That’s a shame, but it’s unavoidable. I’m not even married nor have I had a child. It would be a real loss to die out there before enjoying those milestones.”
“From the sound of it, it seems like you’re planning to get married and have kids,” Qiu Yuluo said with a laugh.
“Let me know ahead of time when the event is, I’ll prepare a big red envelope for you.”
“Nothing’s certain yet; at this rate, I probably won’t even be a dad by forty.”
“That’s your own affair then.”
Qiu Yuluo laughed with a hint of schadenfreude.
“Alright, enough chitchat, I’ve got other things to do; let’s keep in touch by phone. Good luck.”
Qiu Yuluo hung up, and Lin Yi threw his phone aside, continuing to think about Christmas gifts.
But Ji Qingyan, standing outside the door, felt deeply unsettled for a long time.
With her intelligence, she had easily guessed that the person who called Lin Yi was probably from his former organization.
Perhaps they had wanted to assign him a mission, though he had refused.
But what stung Ji Qingyan the most was Lin Yi’s comment “I might not even be a dad by forty.”
Perhaps in his heart, he had already given up on this matter.
Thinking that having children with her might be unlikely.
The words he had spoken in the room earlier could have been just small talk.
Suddenly, Ji Qingyan felt an inexplicable heartache.
As a woman, letting a man harbor such thoughts could be seen as her greatest failure.
Ji Qingyan shuddered, never thinking she’d see the day when she would be such a disappointment.
Standing at the room’s entrance, Ji Qingyan remained silent for a long time.
Only when her emotions had settled did she nonchalantly return to the room.
Seeing Ji Qingyan coming back, Lin Yi sat up from the floor with a grin,
“You’re done so quickly, that was fast.”
“I’m not that dirty, just a quick wash,” Ji Qingyan said.
“Let’s get some sleep; there’s other stuff to do tomorrow.”
“Got it.”
With the room lights off, Lin Yi lay on the floor playing with his phone, while Ji Qingyan tossed and turned, unable to sleep.
For her, the long night was a torment.
The next morning, when Lin Yi woke up, Ji Qingyan was already out of bed.
As usual, she went to brush her teeth and wash up before going down for breakfast.
At this moment, Ji Qingyan and Song Lan were in the kitchen preparing breakfast.
“Work quickly, he’s got to go to work soon, don’t slow him down.”
“The cases are all closed; he’s not busy lately, there’s no rush.”
“But still, be quick about it. Who knows when something might come up?” Song Lan said.
“It would be good if he caught more thieves and criminals, it would make society a bit safer.”
“What’s so good about that job? He’s dealing with bad people all day, and there’s always the risk of danger. I wish he would just quit now.”
“Quit?”
Song Lan looked at Ji Qingyan, “Why should he quit when things are fine?”
“Because it’s too dangerous; I don’t want him to do it anymore.”
“Let me tell you, even if he were to quit, don’t you be the one to say it. When he decides not to do it anymore, he’ll resign on his own.”
“Why can’t I say it?”
“He’s an adult; does he really need you to tell him what to do?” Song Lan looked impatiently at her daughter.
“Even if he changes jobs and you’re still not satisfied, what then? Do you expect him to do whatever you say to be happy? What if Lin Yi asked you to stop working and stay at home as a housewife, would you be willing?”
