After the brief revelry, there was the coming war.
After Guy greeted Bai Liu, he quickly said goodbye to them, and followed the assault team and dozens of heavy artillery onto the train.
Alex stood where the train started. He looked at Guy who stuck his head out of the train window and greeted him with a smile, his eyes almost staring right through Guy.
Tang Erda left even earlier. As a recruit of the first assault team who joined through abnormal means, he took the train and left the tavern at about two or three in the morning to go to the battlefield for adaptive training.
Bai Liu asked Spades to wash off the paint, store the balloons in the box that Guy found for him, and put them in the room. He then went to the training ground with other recruits to receive their assignments.
Alex took them to the training ground. When he reached the door, he turned around and looked at Bai Liu: “I hope I will never pick up your bodies on the battlefield.”
“Of course, it’s very possible that someone else will pick it up.” Alex smiled reluctantly, but he quickly calmed down, raised his head and looked at Bai Liu firmly, “After I finish today’s cleaning work, tomorrow I will apply to join the second commando team, and I won’t be a sweeper anymore.”
Bai Liu looked at him: “Because Guy went to the first team, right?”
“Yes.” Alex lowered his head, he turned the ring on the ring finger of his left hand. With a very happy and contented smile on his face, he whispered, “We have come this far, and only death can separate us.”
Alex patted Bai Liu and Spades on the shoulders: “Guy crossed off your commando registration. Go be a sweeper, it’s safer.”After saying that, he jogged off and waved goodbye to Bai Liu.
Bai Liu withdrew his gaze from Alex’s back and looked at the shelves standing near the door of the training ground.
The shelf was rusty, and there was a thick stack of registration forms on it. There was a notice board with white letters and a red background on it – [Application for quotas for the Second Assault Team and the Third Assault Team].
“It seems that there is a player identity option here. The suggested answer given by the main line NPC is the sweeper.” Bai Liu said thoughtfully, “But the game also places a commando application here.”
The main task of the game is to help Alex win the war. The winner is the player who collects the most corpses within seven days.
From these two points of view, it is possible to complete the mission as a sweeper and a commando, but the price/performance ratio is too low.
Collecting corpses as a soldier is a pure labor competition. This is not in line with the usual design style of this game. There must be some shortcut to obtain corpses in large quantities.
What is the best way to get the most bodies in a war?
Of course, as one of the camps, there is nothing more cost-effective to obtain casualties than to initiate a war.
Bai Liu narrowed his eyes.
Helping Alex win the war does not assign a camp, but only characters and contact methods of victory. Combined with the attitudes of the two main NPCs, Alex and Guy, towards the war, it is very likely that there is a setting here. A subplot involving Alex’s rebellion.
Assuming that the designer of this game deliberately made Alex an NPC with an unstable position, as Bai Liu thought, then Alex would be likely to rebel against his current camp.
This should also be the reason why the players of The Judge’s group could join the hostile camp.
If Alex rebels and joins the enemy camp, players in the enemy camp can also trigger the main mission to help Alex win the war.
From this perspective, there are two player camps in this game. One is to help Alex, who did not rebel, win the war, and the other is to help Alex, who rebelled, win the war. ℞ã₦OΒЕṥ
So the only question now is under what circumstances will Alex, a medical student with a gentle temperament who loves his hometown and country but has a negative attitude towards war, rebel?
Although Alex holds a negative attitude towards the war, this attitude isn’t enough to catalyze Alex to violently resist his current environment and defect to join the enemy.
His opinion still remains that even if this war is wrong, he must wait until the war is ended with his own victory before settling these mistakes and compensating the innocent people who were harmed by this mistake.
Alex has accepted war for what it is, in which neither side is innocent.
In Alex’s mind, the incompetent government is certainly guilty, but even more guilty are these backward enemies who killed soldiers and started the war.
In this case, Alex will definitely be inclined to stand in his own camp. Even if Guy dies on the battlefield, he cannot easily change Alex’s perception of his camp and make him rebel – this was something that was predetermined when Alex chose to join his own army camp instead of becoming a volunteer for the enemy.
If Alex is to defect, a different kind of catalyst was missing.
Bai Liu turned his head and looked at the track where Guy was sitting, riding away on the train.
He knew what the catalyst was.
“Choose the sweeper.” Bai Liu turned to look at Spades, “Do you have any objections?”
Spades nodded and said, “Anything is fine.”
After Bai Liu and Spades entered the training ground and were assigned the status of sweepers, a communications soldier ran into the training ground in a panic holding a telegram. His eyes widened in horror and shouted sharply: “Guy Davis of the First Assault Team has mutinied!”
“He suddenly turned around on the battlefield and used a bazooka to blow off the head of his deputy shooter, destroying two hidden firepower points on our side.”
The soldier who rushed in was so angry that his eyes were red: “This despicable asshole! He killed more than twenty veterans of the first assault team, and then under the enemy’s fire cover, he cleaned the battlefield, dragged the loot and surrendered to join the enemy military!!”
The whole place was in an uproar.
That night, the fighting worsened again.
The operation of the first assault team failed miserably due to Guy’s rebellion. The general who relied on his wife to rise to power was so angry that he finally pulled the thousand heavy artillery pieces to the front line overnight and merged the remaining members of the entire first assault team into the second assault team. He let the second assault team take over, and launched the second assault at dawn.
Bai Liu and Spades, two sweepers with only simple training, were also forced to the front line along with the heavy artillery because of the imminent mass casualties.
They were given a simple military tent, some stretchers and two sapper shovels, some anti-infection drugs in small bottles, a dozen suture kits, and several rolls of hemostatic bandages.
Bai Liu and the others were stationed next to Alex’s camp. After they were stationed, they walked into Alex’s tent.
The light inside the tent was very dim, and one could vaguely see the piles of corpses on the ground, with Alex sitting motionless like a corpse in the middle.
This young man who said during the day that he wanted to join the Second Commando Team seemed to have had his soul sucked out of him in just one day, and he was so haggard that he lost his form in just a dozen hours.
Alex’s military uniform was spattered with blood and coagulated flesh from top to bottom, and his face was covered in patches of blood. He stared at the mutilated corpses on the ground in trance, flicking his eyes up only slightly as he saw Bai Liu and the others lift the curtain and enter, before he continued to stare again.
Bai Liu walked to the table and lit the lamp. The light illuminated everything in the tent, including the bedding on the narrow camp bed that had not yet been tidied up, where the two people had been intertwined.
Alex’s eyes slowly moved to the quilt, and he stared at it for an unknown length of time. Finally, the accumulated emotions overwhelmed him, causing him to bend down under the unbearable strength on them for a moment, covering his face, breaking down and crying.
Only then did Bai Liu ask, “Alex, what happened?”
Alex raised his head, his voice was hoarse and he was in a trance: “——I got on Guy’s next train and was transported to the front line.”
“I was worried about Guy, I was afraid that something would happen to him, so I secretly exchanged positions with other sweepers and came to the area where the first commando team was stationed – it was already very late, there was a heavy rain, and the sky looked particularly dark. I saw Guy and their tents moving, as if they had received a telegram from the commander. Because of the heavy rain, the lake level had risen a lot, and the raid had to be brought forward.”
“The captain of the first assault team proposed to go far away and attack from the area outside the lake to the east. Guy seemed to disagree. I heard him refute the captain fiercely, saying that it was not a war zone at all.”
Bai Liu knelt on one knee in front of Alex and asked softly: “Where is that place?”
“There is another indigenous village there.” There were countless dried tears on Alex’s face. “According to the requirements of the international peacekeeping department, the people there have declared themselves to be a neutral camp and are not allowed to attack.”
Bai Liu continued to ask: “Then why did the captain attack there?”
“Because the indigenous people there adopted many children and women of the enemy who were displaced due to the war. Later, people from the enemy camp began to deliberately and quietly place their children and wives there because it was safe.”
Alex paused for a moment: “But many of us here don’t think it is innocent. The general has submitted applications to the international peacekeeping departments three times, requesting that this indigenous village be included in the war zone, but it has been rejected because of insufficient reasons.”
“So this time, the general was going to kill first.” Bai Liu asked calmly, “But there are only children and women there, so what’s the point of attacking?”
Alex shook his head: “It’s not just that. The indigenous people here attach great importance to blood and family ties. If the commando team can hold that village hostage, it’s very likely that these indigenous people will be suppressed for a short period of time – at least it can allow us to survive this rainy season.”
“And…” Alex paused, “The International Peacekeeping Department’s restrictions on us are not as big as you think. As long as the other party fights back, it can be judged as an act of war, and the other party can be included in the war zone.”
Bai Liu asked again: “So was this plan implemented in the end?”
Alex was lost in silence for a long time before he replied with difficulty: “…It was done. I saw Guy get into the car with his luggage on his back and leave.”
“We, the sweepers, followed very closely behind, and waited until the sky was dark… I couldn’t remember what time it was, but there was more heavy rain in the middle, and then I heard the sound of artillery fire and screams. “
“But there was no artillery reserve in the villages raided this time, so there should have been no sound of firing.”
Alex’s breathing became rapid: “I didn’t know what happened, but I was afraid that something would happen to Guy, so I ran over -“
He closed his eyes, tears falling down: “There were sounds of bullets and artillery fire everywhere, and someone was yelling hysterically, but I couldn’t hear anything. I touched my ear and it was bleeding. I think it was from the shock. I screamed for Guy like crazy, and eventually I saw him on a hillside, bruised and battered.”
“I wanted to rush over, but the people around me were pulling me and yelling at me ferociously, telling me not to go over. I didn’t understand why I couldn’t go over at first. There was Guy, my lover, and I wanted to go save him.”
Alex opened his empty eyes: “Until I saw him raise his rocket launcher and sniper rifle, shooting at the people around him coldly, without any hesitation.”
“I know he has received professional training and was once the best rocket soldier in the team, but I have never seen this side of him.”
“He was like a god of death, holding a rocket launcher at me and everyone, smiling with tears in his eyes and saying, ‘I’m sorry, Alex, I can’t watch the people he wanted to protect being so persecuted’.”
“Marrying you was what I longed for most. After that, I think I will be happy even when I die.”
Alex’s tears slowly overflowed, and he took a deep breath: “——So he said that he has no regrets anymore, and he is going to die for something else.”
“I carried the corpses he had blown up back one by one. Many of these people were the same people who blessed me and him last night, but today they are lying here, blown to pieces by the person they blessed.”
Alex whispered, “I don’t understand.”
“The factory director, the first person he loved, pursued justice, and the lives he wanted to protect were human lives. These people–” Alex staggered to his feet. He pointed to 20 or so broken corpses on the ground. He was almost hysterical, and his eyes were red as asked Bai Liu, “–The lives of his friends who have rescued him countless times and blessed him do not count?”
Alex shook his head and backed away. He screamed desperately: “This is not right!! Guy did something wrong! These people didn’t deserve to die!”
