GREED: ALL FOR WHAT?

Chapter 2072 - 2072: Nothing Is Free.

The high priest smiled in triumph as he watched Legion go. It was after he was gone that the high priest remembered something.

He slapped his forehead and said, “I forgot to ask him if he knew how to set up the altar and if he needed help.”

Then he shrugged and said, “I’m sure it will be fine. The god of steam will accept anything as long as it is not intentionally blasphemous.”

Not everyone can set up an altar, and an altar couldn’t be set up anyhow. Each god has their own preferences.

The gods also have the choice to accept an altar or reject it. A wrong altar can be rejected, and it can anger the gods. The same is true for a correct altar.

An altar arranged correctly can still anger the gods and can also be rejected. The gods retain the right to choose. So as long as the gods favor someone, they are more likely to overlook mistakes and accept a wrong altar.

The high priest shook his head in envy and returned to the church. That part wasn’t fake. He is truly envious of Legion.

His promises were not fake either. If Legion were to become a machinist, those things that were teased were likely to happen to him. But they won’t be for free.

As Legion walked away, he chuckled with mirth and said to himself, “Nothing is truly free.”

Many people would be willing to do anything to become a son of God, but not him. He has bigger goals than that. He plans to become a god and more that even that.

Plus, the price he has to pay for that gift is not something he is willing to pay. If the cost of becoming a son of God was cheap or free, he might be willing to accept it. But thru cost isn’t free.

For one, once he becomes a machinist, he will lose his freedom. The god of power will be able to find him and coerce him into doing whatever it wants.

If he accepts more help from the god of steam and becomes the son of God, he might lose his free will and become a vessel for the god of steam. At that point, there will be no need for coercion. He will do whatever the god of steam wants whenever he wants it, and he will do it with a silly smile on his face and the praises of the god of steam on his lips.

He is not willing to pay the lowest price, much less the higher prices, so he won’t become a machinist. There is just no way he will accept the benefits that the high priest used to tempt him.

He shook his head when he thought about the high priest’s performance. “They thought they were smooth. I have to give it to them. Maybe I would have been fooled if I didn’t know the inside story.”

From the oracle to the high priest expressing jealousy and envy. His performance was impeccable. Very few people would have been able to resist the temptation.

And when he failed to get the immediate reward, the high priest suggested that he build an altar in his house. It is true that if he does that, he will be able to take full advantage of the free services of the god of steam, but that isn’t free either.

A god can see through any altar dedicated to them. They can see what’s going on around the altar, and if they are willing, they can transmit some of their power through the altar.

So if he builds an altar in his home and dedicates it to the god of stesm, at the very least, he would have invited a spy into his home. The god of steam will be able to monitor him through it.

If things go beyond that, the god of steam will be able to influence him through the altar. So the free use of the altar isn’t free at all.

Just thinking about it made him chuckle and say, “Good plan.”

He expected something like this to happen because the high priest had tried to recruit him the two previous times that he went to the church, but this time, he has to give both the god of steam and the high priest their due praise.

What he is most impressed with about their methods is that they didn’t lie to him about the benefits he could gain if he becomes a machinist. Those benefits are real. It is just that they have hidden costs.

He chuckled some more and went about his day with a good mood.

He can’t be angry that they tried to fool him into becoming a machinist because it shows that the god of steam recognizes his value and how extraordinary it is. So he feels proud that they are going to such an extent to woo him.

There is also the fact that he just saved 10 silver coins and might be able to save more in the future if he doesn’t need to spend money to send his letters. This is a tangible benefit, and there is nothing better than tangible benefits to put him in a good mood.

All he needs to do now is wait for Tesla’s reply. He is sure that it will be good news.

He wasn’t wrong about that. When he went to the church the following day, he found Tesla’s letter waiting there for him.

In fact, Tesla had read his letter, confirmed the details of the letter, accepted the conditions in the letter, and sent a reply to him all in one hour after he sent his letter. Tesla was that proactive and sincere about becoming his partner.

What followed after that was the making and signing of contracts based on their agreement. The god of steam was used as their witness and guarantor, so anyone who breaks the contract will be dealt with by the god of steam.
