Click! Pew! Thud! Pew! Thud! Pew! Thud!
Kang Chan leaped in and shot the three men in front of Dayeru in the foreheads.
Again, Dayeru was no fool. Kang Chan was just Kang Chan.
If he wanted to play it safe, he should have gone for the enemies closest to the door from the right. However, he took down those near Dayeru instead.
Blood splashed onto Dayeru’s face and upper body. The enemy on the right side of the door swung a long knife at him. Kang Chan quickly lifted his rifle to block it.
Loud gunfire echoed from outside.
“Captain! Hurry!” Gérard yelled over the noise.
Haah. Haah.
Kang Chan quickly extended his arm. If he drew his pistol now, he’d just make it harder to shoot around Dayeru. Hence, he instead unsheathed his bayonet from his waist and slashed upward, slitting the throat of the man in front of him.
“Grrrgh!”As blood gushed out like a burst hose, Kang Chan grabbed the arm of the enemy with the large knife and cut him in the armpit and neck.
Click!
Another raised his rifle, but Kang Chan quickly threw his bayonet at him.
The gunfire outside was growing louder.
While Kang Chan was unsheathing the bayonet strapped to his ankle, a large knife was thrown at him. He tried to dodge it, but it cut deeply into his left forearm.
“Mmhm!” Dayeru shouted through the gag with red eyes.
Though he couldn’t speak, Kang Chan could make out enough to know that Dayeru was telling him to just get the hell out.
Kang Chan took down another enemy, but another cut him in the right wrist.
Swish!
“Aaaggh!”
Kang Chan used the enemy he had just slashed as a barrier. He then met Dayeru’s gaze.
‘Go! Just go!’
‘Have you forgotten who I am? Endure! Survive!’
‘Please!’
“Mmmmmph!”
Swish! Swish! Shik! Shiiik!
It was too much for anyone to fight a dozen enemies alone in a small space. Though only a short period had passed, Kang Chan was already covered in blood, and he had sent at least eight enemies to the ground.
Swiiiish! Stab!
Kang Chan threw his bayonet at the neck of an enemy trying to lift his rifle. He then took aim.
Bang! Thud! Bang! Thud! Bang! Thud! Bang! Thud!
With each loud shot, a rebel fell to the ground lifelessly, seemingly electrocuted.
Bang! Bang! Ratatatatat! Bang!
Kang Chan pulled his bayonet from the dead man’s neck, approached Dayeru, and cut the rope binding his limbs. Finally, Kang Chan removed the gag in Dayeru’s mouth.
“Let’s go!”
Covered in blood, they looked like monsters.
Click!
Kang Chan picked up an MP5, and Dayeru picked up an AK-47 on the ground.
Ratatatatat! Bang!
Gérard, who was next to the door, kept fending off the enemies in the twisting alleyway.
Chk!
“Pygmy! There are three of us! Cover us!” Kang Chan radioed as he dashed to the back door of the two-story building.
“Haul ass!” he ordered.
Ratatatatat! Bang! Ratatatat! Bang! Bang!
Gérard and Dayeru followed right behind, their fingers on the triggers.
Click! Bang! Thud! Bang! Thud! Bang! Thud!
Kang Chan’s bullets pierced the heads of any enemy who peeked out. He entered through the back door and exited the front door.
Peeeew!
He couldn’t be gladder to hear that gunshot.
Chk!
“Captain! That way! Hurry!”
Kang Chan gritted his teeth and turned around.
A terrible pain rushed through his back, thighs, and shoulders—almost as if someone’s hand was digging through his wounds.
Dayeru almost stumbled, but Kang Chan dashed forward and hooked Dayeru’s arm over his left shoulder.
“Gérard! Cover our rear!”
Bang! Pew! Pew!
Even Kang Chan couldn’t aim perfectly with just one arm.
“Daye! Hang on!”
Click!
When Kang Chan held his rifle with his left arm, he felt Dayeru trying to let go.
“Stop with the bullshit and grab my shoulder! Do you think I’ll leave you behind?”
Click! Bang! Thud! Bang! Thud! Bang! Thud!
As they plowed through the road, Montchelle and the Pygmy Unit provided them with cover fire.
Peeew! Peeew! Peeew!
Gérard followed closely, keeping their six in check.
Fortunately, the rows of small houses provided them with cover. Moreover, Montchelle and the Pygmy soldiers were successfully holding off the enemies coming from the alley.
“Haah! Haah!”
Dayeru kept stumbling due to the deep cut in his waist. However, they couldn’t slow down now.
As they got out of the alley, Mazani and another soldier came running over.
“Captain!”
Mazani quickly took Dayeru on his back.
“Run! This way!”
As Kang Chan instructed, Mazani ran along the path.
Pew! Peeew! Bang bang bang! Peew!
Kang Chan and Gérard took turns guarding the rear as they went up the mountain.
“Mont! Aim for those coming out of the alley over there! Pygmy Unit! Send half your men over!”
“Oui!”
Montchelle quickly took out three enemies who were trying to exit the alley.
“Mont! Go!”
Montchelle slung his sniper rifle around his back and sprinted for the exit.
“Pygmy! Fall back!”
The Pygmit Unit ran.
Kang Chan and Gérard were the last to retreat.
The impact of every step sent a tearing pain through Kang Chan.
“Haah! Haah!”
He kept stumbling, but if he stopped, he’d die. His men would charge forward to save him, which would get them killed too.
Gérard ran beside Kang Chan, his breathing pattern a bit strange.
When Kang Chan glanced over, he saw Gérard crying.
Crazy bastard! He’s really showing me everything today!
Ratatatatatatatat! Ratatatatatatatat!
Heavy machine gun fire rumbled from far below the mountain.
The enemies were probably shooting just for the heck of it since they had already come running over. They were shooting randomly, so it wasn’t much of a threat.
It was already morning, at least; the soldiers could now see the path properly.
Click! Click! Clack! Rustle!
They brushed past branches and leaves, likely scratching them all over their faces and napes. Still, they could only be bothered by it if they could get out of their situation alive.
Kang Chan had lost so much blood that he was starting to get dizzy.
“Haah! Haah! Haah! Haah!”
Gritting his teeth, he kept running.
“Captain!”
Mazani and another soldier were holding on as well.
“What about Daye?”
“Pygmy has him!”
That was the end of the conversation.
The four kept running like hell. That was the best they could do.
Kang Chan didn’t know how far he’d run. They had been moving for so long that he wanted to give up, but before he could, they came across the Bantu Unit.
The Bantu Unit was two hours away from them, yet they arrived in less than an hour.
Learning that Absala had been eliminated and that their colleagues were being chased seemed to have given them a rush of adrenaline.
“Haah! Haah!”
Kang Chan wanted nothing more than to prop his hands on his knees for even just a second.
“Pygmy has already left,” Bantu’s commander reported with glinting eyes. Kang Chan’s bloodied appearance seemed to have made him more determined.
“Can I leave the rest to you?” Kang Chan asked.
“Of course!”
“We’re in your hands, then!”
“Oui!”
Kang Chan moved again with Mazani, Gérard, and another soldier. They didn’t have to run anymore. Since Bantu would be watching the rear, they wouldn’t be chased for the time being.
Click. Click.
Kang Chan drank water as he walked.
After about twenty minutes, he finally caught up with the Pygmy soldiers and found Dayeru.
He looked like a huge bear getting a piggyback ride.
Click. Click.
Kang Chan glanced at Dayeru and continued walking.
Two hours later, they heard gunshots from the Bantu Unit’s position.
Ratatatatat! Ratatatatat! Bang bang bang! Bang bang bang bang!
“Mazani! Take point and get the trucks ready! Pygmy! Pick four men! The rest of you, get going!” Kang Chan commanded.
The Pygmy commander stayed behind with three men, remaining at Kang Chan’s side.
Click! Click!
They all checked their magazines and walked again after about ten minutes. They were moving much more slowly than before.
Ratatatat! Bang bang bang bang! Ratatat! Ratat! Bang bang bang!
Based on the slower rate of fire and shorter bursts of gunfire, the battle seemed to be coming from a decent distance now.
Click. Click.
It was a similar concept to the way the next runner in a relay race started further than the previous runner. If the Bantu Unit chased after them here, they would send half of the soldiers up first. The rest would take turns holding off the enemies.
Ratatatatat! Bang bang bang bang bang! Ratatatatat! Ratatatatat!
The series of gunshots confirmed that the enemy was following them. However, the Bantu Unit was keeping them a good distance away.
The rebels wouldn’t show up with heavy weapons in the mountains like this, so they were no match for the special forces teams.
Click. Click.
The combat noises remained about the same over the next hour.
However, they were getting closer and closer. Strangely, the rebels were in hot pursuit.
There were always some gunners who wanted to make a name for themselves. They wanted to get in on the action, were hot-headed, and made wronged expressions when they died.
Another hour passed.
Getting sleep and eating when they could was the best way to get through these situations. Right now, their stamina was their biggest defense.
They walked for about half an hour.
Chk!
“The trucks are ready!” someone radioed faintly.
Chk!
“Bantu! How’s the distance?”
Chk!
“Half an hour away! You don’t have to worry about the enemy!”
As if to make Kang Chan worry, gunshots rang out.
Ratatatatatat! Ratatatatatat! Bang bang bang bang bang! Bang bang bang!
It was just over forty minutes.
Vrooom! Vrooom! Vrooom!
They heard engines roaring awake in the distance.
Chk!
“Bantu! We’re at the trucks! What’s your status?”
Chk!
“There aren’t many left. If you don’t mind, we’ll take care of them and catch up after!”
Chk!
“If you’ve secured enough space, getting out is more important!”
Chk!
“Oui!”
Arriving within sight of the truck, Kang Chan waited with the Pygmy commander.
A few moments later, the soldiers of the Bantu Unit began to gather one by one.
“Hurry!”
While Kang Chan stood guard, the soldiers quickly climbed into the trucks.
They heard weak gunfire coming in the distance.
If they kept up shooting like that on the way here, they would probably run out of ammunition.
The Bantu commander soon emerged and ran for the trucks. Kang Chan nodded at him with his rifle at the ready.
“Pygmy! Go!” Kang Chan ordered.
As commanded, the Pygmy soldiers ran toward the trucks. Finally, Kang Chan climbed in last.
Vrooom! Vrooom! Vrooom!
The truck with Kang Chan in it was the first to go, followed by the Pygmy Unit, and lastly, the Bantu Unit.
Clunk! Clunk!
Kang Chan leaned against the driver’s seat and sat on the floor of the cargo bed.
The blood on his face and fingers had dried up. Every rattle of the truck sent pain shooting through him like raw wounds.
They had traveled for about an hour on what was a two-hour drive. Kang Chan wasn’t too worried about the enemy chasing after them anymore.
The sun seemed to suck the last of his energy through his wounds. However, he didn’t want to lose consciousness.
He had to hold on.
“Cigarette!” Kang Chan shouted. Mazani quickly dug through his pockets.
