First Immortal of the Sword
Chapter 2209 - A Forbidden Spacetime Zone, Hong TaiyuChapter 2209 – A Forbidden Spacetime Zone, Hong Taiyu
Boom!
The Human-Faced Bluebird instantly expanded until she was one hundred thousand feet tall. Her wings unfurled, like the blades of divine adjudication.
Her whole body was covered in blood-red Laws of the Natural Order, and waves of firelight swept forth like the tides, tearing through the sky.
The entire stretch of black plains shook violently, and startling spacetime rifts appeared in the sky.
The terrifying power of a Master God put intense pressure on Su Yi.
He sighed. “It’s a pity, but my wounds have yet to fully recover, and my cultivation base is only half restored. Otherwise, I’d have loved nothing more than to duke it out with you.”
A One-Tribulation Master God was just the kind of opponent he wanted. Unfortunately, he’d have to give up on this opportunity.
As these thoughts flashed through his head, Su Yi raised the copper lamp into the air.
A boundless Daoist invocation emanated from it, and the wick erupted with immeasurably powerful divine flames, like a curtain of dusk connecting heaven and earth and dyeing the entire landscape yellow.
The bell hanging over the gates of the run-down temple suddenly rang, the sound like the low rumbling of thunder.
The barren black plains’ spacetime power visibly contorted, as if folding in on itself.
The Human-Faced Bird beat her wings and cleaved at Su Yi, only to discover that although Su Yi seemed close at hand, he was suddenly endlessly far away. There were countless layers of spacetime barriers between them!
That aside, the seemingly folded Laws of Space seemed to compress the space around the Human-Faced Bird.
Her massive frame was instantly beset by layers of restrictive spatial power on all sides.
It was a strange, terrifying scene.
In truth, this was an exquisite application of the Law of Space.
“Die!” The Human-Faced Bluebird sensed the danger, roared, and struggled like mad. Divine Radiance erupted from her massive frame, breaking through the oppression of the layers of folded space.
She beat her wings and shot into the heavens. It was obvious that she was going all out, and that she was on the brink of madness!
Su Yi subtly shook his head, then swung the copper lamp.
Whoosh!
An immeasurably powerful streak of divine fire tore through the endless space, enveloping the Human-Faced Bluebird.
Boom!
Her massive frame and enormous wings instantly caught ablaze. Flames the color of the setting sun erupted all over her body.
Her feathers, skin, bones, and organs… were all incinerated.
“No——!” The Human-Faced Bluebird shrieked in terror. “Su Yi! You’ll pay for this sooner or later, I’m sure of it!”
Before her voice had even finished echoing through the air, her massive body split, and her ashes fell to the ground like snow.
“I’m already surrounded by enemies on all sides. How could I possibly be afraid of retribution?” Su Yi laughed.
He glanced down at the copper lamp, a look of surprise on his face. This treasure really is quite something! Alas, it’s not mine.
Su Yi set aside his scattered thoughts, then turned and approached the run-down temple.
The sound of the bell had given way to silence, and the flames like the light of dusk had receded. The barren black plains had returned to their former stillness.
When Su Yi pushed open the temple gates and walked inside, an ancient, turbid voice rang out. It emanated from within the split altar.
“Do you understand the strength of the Heavenless Lamp and World-Refining Bell now?”
“I do.” Su Yi inclined his head. “They really are top-notch Undying treasures. The former is imbued with Laws of Incineration, while the latter is imbued with the mysteries of space. Both are wondrously powerful, with endless applications.”
That aged voice laughed. “Then might you consider cooperating with me? Agree, and I’ll lend both treasures to you for the time being. That aside, when the Dark Days of Legend arrive and my faction emerges into the present day, I’ll bequeath you an enormous stroke of good fortune!”
Su Yi smiled. “I think I’ll pass, thank you. I’m not interested in the faction behind you. The Grand Dao is a path toward the heavens, and we must each pursue it for ourselves. I just hope that we never become enemies.”
With that, he placed the bell back on the altar.
That aged voice fell briefly silent before saying, “‘The Grand Dao is a path toward the heavens, and we must each pursue it for ourselves?’ I hope that’s the case.”
“I trespassed in your territory, yet you welcomed me with the utmost hospitality and lent me this treasure. No matter whether we end up friends or enemies, I’ll remember this good turn.” Su Yi clasped his fist.
“I wouldn’t call it ‘the utmost hospitality.’ It was as easy as pushing a dinghy downstream. After all, you have the power to suppress both the Heavenless Lamp and World-Refining Bell. If you wanted to steal them, I wouldn’t be able to stop you.”
That aged voice laughed. “It’s just as you said. Whether we wind up friends or foes is a problem for the future.”
Su Yi nodded, then suddenly asked, “Are there other ‘forbidden spacetime zones’ like this one in the Barren Mountains of Divine Calamity?”
This Daoist temple was merely a spacetime node!
The altar connected to another spacetime, one not of the present age!
In a sense, the entire temple served as an anchor point. When the Dark Days of Legend arrived, the owner of that voice, and the faction behind him, would use the temple as an anchor to arrive in the present day.
Thus, this place was a spacetime forbidden zone! It was similar to the Path of the Ancient Gods in many ways.
Earlier, when Su Yi entered the temple, he did indeed run into danger. First, the World-Refining Bell had attempted to restrict him. Then, the Heavenless Lamp came close to suppressing him.
Fortunately, at a critical juncture, the Sword of the Nine Hells rumbled and boomed, neutralizing the danger.
This was what gave Su Yi the opportunity to converse with the owner of that aged voice.
“There are,” confirmed the aged voice. “There are two other spacetime nodes deep within the mountains, or as you called them, spacetime forbidden zones.”
He paused, then said, “But I urge you not to go there. There are dangers sufficient to destroy Master Gods near each spacetime node.
“As you know, the spacetime nodes are entrances leading into the present day. If we experts and factions not of this era wish to come here, we’ll need to pass through those spacetime nodes. We absolutely cannot tolerate anyone destroying them.”
Su Yi nodded. “I understand. Alright, it’s about time I got going. Should fate bring us together again, let’s share a drink. Farewell.”
He turned and was just about to leave when that aged voice rang out. “My name is Hong Taiyu, but people honor me as God Emperor Taiyu. Might you tell me your name, too?”
“My name is Su Yi,” said Su Yi. “I’m a sword cultivator.”
“A sword cultivator? Oh, but what a sword cultivator you are!” The man who called himself God Emperor Taiyu sighed with admiration.
When he set aside honorifics and titles and all that was trivial and fleeting, he revealed this most fundamental of truths: both of them were cultivators in pursuit of the Grand Dao. No more, no less.
Su Yi’s self-introduction told Hong Taiyu that he didn’t care in the least about his reputation or empty titles. He was free and unrestrained.
His ambition lay in his Dao of the Sword, which he strove for diligently!
Hong Taiyu had introduced himself with his title. In doing so, he’d revealed the disparity in their mentalities.
They were, after all, just passersby in each other’s lives. What need was there to share their titles or accolades? Sharing them was proof that he cared too much about such trivialities.
One cared, and the other didn’t. It was obvious whose mentality was superior!
This was what made Hong Taiyu sigh in admiration.
Su Yi didn’t turn around. He just smiled and left.
The skies over the black, barren plains were completely empty, but as Su Yi walked, their spatial power silently transformed.
A path to life in the outside world appeared beneath his feet.
When he left and tried to look back, the landscape remained, but the temple standing amidst the ruins was now shrouded in dense layers of black clouds.
“Hui Qing was a Human-Faced Bluebird who’d become a Master God, yet not even she realized how taboo this place was. She was foolish to have followed us inside. Her death was truly unworthy of pity.” Su Yi shook his head. “Now it’s time to look for Luo Qingdi.”
Su Yi took a moment to get oriented, then headed deeper into the Barren Mountains of Divine Calamity.
Earlier, Huang Changting had led the group through the mountains relying on the Grand Dao Heaven-Guiding Compass to avoid danger.
But Su Yi knew that in a mysterious, perilous place like this, there was no treasure he could rely on.
There were just too many variables, and that meant that disaster and misfortune were unpredictable!
Take the black plains they’d traversed earlier. The Grand Dao Heaven-Guiding Compass had only been able to predict the good fortune within the temple. It was only after it arrived that the compass had sensed the calamity lying in wait.
It was completely unreliable.
Ultimately, while the compass might have been incomparably accurate in the outside world, it’d do him no good in an unpredictable, dangerous place like this. Worse, a single inaccurate prediction could lead to certain doom.
En route.
Heaven and earth suddenly swayed.
Su Yi silently came to a halt and gazed into the dome of heaven.
An unparalleled, grand battle was raging overhead!
Master Gods attacked, all of them swathed in endless light, like rulers straight out of a legend. They each wielded terrifying Undying treasures, and all of them were locked in fierce combat with… an enormous tree!
That’s right. The Master Gods’ opponent was a tree!
Its trunk was as thick as a mountain, and it towered into the heavens. Its branches descended like rivers of stars, blanketing the sky and blotting out the sun.
It swung its branches in a frenzy, filling the sky with misty, golden light that pierced the skies and shattered the clouds. It broke through the Master Gods’ joint attack with incomparable momentum!
A grand battle of this scale was simply too terrifying.
The Barren Mountains of Divine Calamity covered countless miles, but now, even the heavens collapsed, and even the earth shook. Countless peaks crumbled.
The beasts that called these mountains their home fled in panic, crying out in panic and terror.
Clouds of dust rose into the air, and startling destructive power shook everything around it. It was like a vision of the apocalypse.
“Everyone, no matter your sect of origin, heed my orders! Leave the Barren Mountains of Divine Calamity immediately! Hurry!” boomed a voice like a Daoist invocation. It echoed throughout heaven and earth, spreading far and wide.
At the same time, Su Yi noticed Master Gods shifting through space, all of them rushing toward the spot where the battle had broken out.
There was no doubt about it. The Master Gods stationed outside the mountains had been alerted by this grand battle, and all of them were taking action!
Su Yi’s eyebrows rose. He’d yet to find Luo Qingdi, but now, he’d happened upon this grand battle.
He fought for a moment, then decided against retreating. Instead, he continued toward the site of the battle.
