Courtney had been in a fight before.
Her sisters took her gargoyle hunting back when they were on earth. And she’d fought off her brother to get the last fish stick before.
This was hardly any different.
It was just a guy, riding the back of a dragon, and holding the shiniest, pointiest weapon she had ever seen.
Or maybe she was thinking too much. That was a possibility, too.
“H-Hey, do I kill the dragon too?” Courtney yelled without looking back.
Abaddon and Helios looked at each other.
“W-Well…” Helios rubbed the back of his head. “Avoid it if you can? We haven’t figured out if he’s being treated as a slave or if this is an Uncle Tom type situation.”
Abaddon’s eyes briefly glowed gold. “Just checked.”
“And?” Helios raised a brow.
“…” Abaddon looked ashamed.
“…He’s a coon, isn’t he?”
“Like Uncle Ruckus with scales.”
Helios didn’t need to hear anything else.
“Chop his fucking head off, Courtney!” He yelled. “We don’t have time for any of that shit!”
“Wait!” Jazmine held up her hand. “Maybe we could fix him? Get him to unlearn a bit of-“
Helios pressed a finger against his temple. “It only takes a little bit of mortal brainwash to activate the coon chip in the average drake. We’re better off letting him get reincarnated.”
Courtney wouldn’t pretend that she fully understood exactly what her relatives were arguing about. Rather, she now had more questions than she did when she first asked.
“Master.” The dragon said. “Allow me to take this one’s head for you as a trophy and symbol of my fealty.”
Nevermind. Courtney totally got it.
“Very well, Dharion! But mind her head, as she may serve very well as a concubine.”
Abaddon and Helios stood up. Karliah and Absalom pulled them right back down.
Golden Scrub floated off the dragon’s back and allowed his mount to charge at Courtney on his own.
Dharion opened his maw and spewed a wave of golden flame in Courtney’s direction.
She reacted quickly, swiping her sword in a straight arc and cutting through the wall of flame like simple tissue paper.
When she looked up, Dharion was already gone.
“Mind your senses, kid!” Satan coached.
Everyone on the couch turned to stare at him with an arched eyebrow.
“…What? She’s my second favorite.” He shrugged.
Unexpected or not, his warning was indeed helpful.
The sharpened senses that Courtney usually kept at bay flooded her synapses all at once. She was acutely aware of the flow of magic in the air; the hair bristles against her skin, and it was all strikingly loud. It was no wonder that she usually kept them off.
The bad news was, her body couldn’t yet react to the change in her new awareness. She failed to react to the incoming blow in time.
A giant scaly paw landed on top of her and knocked her to the ground.
She gasped as the wind left her body. The sudden shock caused her to drop her sword.
“Court-” Kanami began.
Abaddon held up his hand, and her words were cut short. Though his eyes were not favorable.
Dharion lifted up a struggling Courtney by the ankle while laughing obnoxiously.
“A splendid effort indeed. You almost successfully filed my nail!”
Courtney raised her hand to her lips and let out a shrill whistle.
Her sword flew off the ground with a mind of it’s own. In the blink of an eye, her blade had cleanly cut through the arm of the dragon holding her upright. She fell back down to the ground harmlessly.
Dharion roared like an injured newborn.
He collapsed while holding his stump of an arm and screaming to the heavens.
Golden Scrub couldn’t believe what he was looking at. His dragon was actually crying.
“It hurts! It hurts, this wretched sorcery burns my flesh and soul like-“
“God, I love this thing.” Courtney kissed the flat of her blade in quick fashion.
Hefting the blade at her side, she drew on the latent power in her body and channeled it into her legs.
She rushed forward so fast that she completely obliterated her sneakers. Four hundred dollars reduced to shreds in an instant.
Barefoot, Courtney ran towards the dragon and then leapt onto its body.
As she raced up his figure, she cut his scales in ribbons with minuscule effort.
His screaming persisted until she opened up his stomach. And a truckload of organs spilled out of his stomach.
Courtney had done well so far. Extremely well, as a matter of fact.
But there’s something about seeing your first bushel of dragon intestines that really makes it hard to keep control of your own intestines.
And just like the rest of Courtney’s senses, her sense of smell was also incredibly heightened.
She never had a chance to begin with.
*Retch*
The dragon, who was already dying, was now in an even worse state.
“She vomited in my stomach..! She vomited in my stomach…!”
The dragon’s head clattered to the ground lifelessly. Courtney wiped her mouth as she tried to get the smell out of her nostrils.
“Y-You killed my dragon!” Golden Scrub roared as he pointed his lance at her. “Foul wench, you will pay for your transgression with your LIFE!”
Golden Scrub launched himself at Courtney like a shooting star.
He was much faster than the dragon was. But luckily, she had enough time for her senses and reflexes to sync up.
She jumped into the air just as a giant lance struck the ground where she once stood.
A faint, confident smile showed up on her lips as she realized something crucial.
However fast this guy was, he was at least slower than Karliah.
That meant as long as she didn’t make any more stupid mistakes, she could actually handle herself.
Beautiful deep blue scales spread from Courtney’s cheeks all the way down to her feet.
Her bones popped and shifted out of place to become clawed talons.
She also seemed to acquire a bit more muscle definition as well. The power that she had already built up from running track was on full display.
Courtney held out her hand and roared unconsciously.
A storm of bright blue lightning left her fingertips and crashed down onto the plane.
At first, it seemed like she had a bit of a small difficulty controlling the flow properly. She missed her initial attack on Golden Scrub by a hair, but the shockwave from her lightning blast did manage to stun him.
Taught to capitalize on any opportunity presented to her, Courtney didn’t hesitate to rush in and seize the moment.
But just for a second… she hesitated.
Similarly, Golden Scrub, despite his fledgling status, had also been taught never to waste an action.
As soon as he saw Courtney hesitate, he recovered his lance and rolled back his shoulder for a thrust that would run her little frame all the way through.
With power great enough to pierce through the moon, it seemed that Courtney was going to experience her first round of dragon healing firsthand.
However, Courtney blinked, and she was suddenly hoisted on a very familiar pair of shoulders. Even with her new speed and senses, she hadn’t been fast enough to see how or when anything had happened.
“G-Grandpa?”
Hajun looked up at Courtney and smiled in that reassuring, kind manner.
“Your father did say you were only allowed one. Best not to disregard his wishes, yes?”
“Oh… probably.” Courtney nodded.
In one hand, Hajun held Courtney securely on his shoulder. In the other, he held the pointed end of Golden Scrub’s lance so firmly that he was actually leaving handprints in the metal.
Golden Scrub was pulling with all of the might in his body, and yet he still couldn’t pull his weapon free, even with two hands.
“You’re uninjured, yes?” Hajun’s only real concern seemed to be his granddaughter’s well-being.
“Ah… yeah. Ankle’s fine. I didn’t get seriously injured or anything like-“
“And your stomach?”
Courtney’s face turned red from embarrassment. “Yup… That’s fine too. The only thing really injured here is my pride.”
“HA!” Hajun laughed. “Lillian-willing, you will live a long, fulfilled life, Courtney-Marie. Best get used to that feeling while you’re young.”
Metal snapped as Hajun broke the pointed tip of his enemy’s weapon.
Golden Scrub’s face showed pure horror. The metal, which was said to be unbreakable, had been snapped by a geriatric dragon with more muscles than their entire army put together.
In an instant, a thick tail wrapped around his midsection and slammed him to the ground, holding him firmly in place.
Golden Scrub was faced with an overwhelming sense of oppression that was so strong, his three hearts nearly stopped beating.
He couldn’t conjure any of his magics. His martial arts had seemingly left him.
His mind had fully succumbed to the fear.
“Let’s get you back home, little one.”
Hajun opened a portal up right next to them and helped Courtney slide to the ground off his shoulder.
After everything that had happened, Courtney felt like asking to stay was a bit too overindulgent of her. Perhaps just taking the win here today was the best thing she could do.
Before she left, she locked eyes with her father, who was still sitting on the sofa. He didnt seem angry with her, but the faint smile on his lips was a little bit more forced than normal.
‘We’ll speak later.’ He mouthed.
Courtney knew right then and there that she was fucked. She couldn’t run through that portal fast enough.
