Across from him.
The man named Federer spoke softly, “If you are willing to endure the agony of being torn apart, you can maintain your youth indefinitely before you fully turn into an Evil Spirit.”
As he spoke, he couldn’t help but let out a cold laugh, “So why did you come? Is it because the Church knew I would be here and got the inside information from Dusk Bell?”
Alvin said expressionlessly, “Is there anything wrong with that?”
Federer said indifferently, “Every organization faces such situations.”
Alvin agreed, “The Church is no different.”
Federer was silent.
After a long time, he continued, “Those fanatics from the Veda Sect have been too active lately. They’re not satisfied with Europe; they even want to release what’s beneath us. They truly deserve to die.”
Alvin said solemnly, “I smell blood on you. Are those fanatics dead?”
Federer replied coldly, “They had to die.”Alvin’s eyelids drooped slightly, as if he was tired, “By now, there probably aren’t any living people left in Massas City, right?”
Federer understood what his old friend meant and said lightly, “You’re asking about the Joker Card, aren’t you? The new hunter who joined should have already obtained another Joker Card and is now on his way back to Switzerland.”
Alvin spoke with some regret, “That’s a pity…”
Federer said disdainfully, “The Church always likes to nip the danger in the bud, but if certain things are not done, the status quo will remain forever.”
"Evil Spirits will only grow in number, while the hunters will dwindle. Without finding a new solution, this world will only plunge deeper into despair.”
Alvin felt he should be angry, but he found that he had long since lost the ability to feel such an emotion.
"Your method is to let an Evil Spirit consume a hunter to study the so-called evil objects. But that’s impossible. Evil Spirits might not have the subjective agency of Evil Spirits, but they are even more evil.”
Federer nodded in agreement, walked up to Alvin, and said, “So he never knew the truth from the start. If the experiment were to fail, Dusk Bell would only lose a reserve member.”
Alvin didn’t agree with this philosophy, but he knew it might be right.
The atmosphere calmed down.
Federer looked at his old friend, his feelings complicated.
After becoming a hunter, the loss of humanity would make a person more akin to an Evil Spirit.
He and Alvin were very good friends once; reuniting after thirty years, there was an indescribable sadness…
It’s only in recent years that the relationship between the Church and the Dusk Bell Church has eased, with some interaction behind the scenes.
As a result, the Church now has more means to deal with the danger of Evil Spirit Transformation. But for the aged Alvin, this doesn’t mean much.
This old man has been left behind by the times; apart from his faith, he no longer has any emotions or humanity.
The Church and the Dusk Bell Church share the same origin.
Federer and Alvin were once the best of partners.
Their contradictory yet inseverable connection is fully exemplified in these two individuals.

Federer left the Church and joined Dusk Bell. The danger of losing his humanity and gradually turning into an Evil Spirit was suppressed, and he can still maintain the feelings a normal person should have, aside from being a bit cold-hearted, without many abnormalities.
Alvin stayed with the Church but was kept underground for a long time, not allowed to leave.
For his faith, Alvin paid too much, yet even when on the brink of turning into an Evil Spirit, his beliefs never wavered.
Two different choices, who is to say which is right or wrong?
Suddenly…
A whispering voice came from the large hole in the ground.
Alvin and Federer turned their heads in unison, looking to the past.
A faint black shadow “crawled” out from within, it had only one eye, but it was filled with bloodshot veins, looking strikingly similar to the black shadow in Du Wei’s home.
Upon seeing the two “living” people, a dense malice emanated from this black shadow.
The next second.
It suddenly disappeared.
Alvin’s face was expressionless as he stepped on his own shadow.
There was a crisp sound…
The moment the black shadow poked its head out from his shadow, it was harshly stomped back in.
Immediately following, another black shadow crawled up from the edge of the hole.
Federer frowned, “This seems to be the source, but there must be something even more terrifying below.”
As he spoke, he widened his only eye, which was filled with a cold breath, reflecting the black shadow that had just emerged.
With one blink, the other black shadow completely vanished.
At that moment, Alvin also took out something resembling a scroll from his body, about 15 centimeters long; when unfolded, it bore a section of text written in blood, interspersed with some special patterns resembling skin textures, making it easy to associate with human skin.
Of course, this was a scroll made of sheepskin.
After Alvin took out the scroll, the cold feeling about him dissipated a good deal, and he closed his eyes, murmuring in an ancient language.
It seemed he was reading the text on the scroll.
Meanwhile, Federer took a deep breath; this scroll was obtained by the Church during the two hundred years of the Crusades, after they had destroyed a heretical group.
And that heretical group was the predecessor of the Veda Sect.
The Church’s records documented that this heretical group had sacrificed thousands of people to create this scroll, yet its power remained unknown to anyone.
Federer’s face looked rather unsightly. “Alvin, why would the Church let you bring this thing here? What exactly are you planning to do?”
Just then, Alvin finished reciting the text on the scroll, and with an expressionless face, he turned and said, “The Church has long been aware of the situation in Massas City and has been trying to find a solution.”
"A few months ago, the people of the Veda Sect also noticed this place, and then there was you.”
"But you don’t know that the city is gradually becoming more and more dreadful; it’s attracting a lot of Evil Spirits.”
"So, the Church knows, it’s practically impossible to resolve the issue of Massas City; they can only try to push the danger further into the future, to delay the outbreak a little longer, giving the Church more time to prepare.”
"But that requires a price to be paid, many Exorcists have died here; they are Sacrifices, and so am I…”
"However, once the Church knew you were coming, they felt a different Sacrifice could be offered.”
Federer was stunned. “You want to sacrifice me?”
What angered him more was that he found out he could no longer move, not knowing when this had happened.
Alvin looked at him and said, “Federer, you shouldn’t have come here.”
"If it were the former me, I would have rejected this plan, but now… I am sorry.”
"No matter how kindhearted one is, once they undergo Evil Spirit Transformation to this extent, they will become just like me; it’s a pity that you people from the Dusk Bell Church have been too secure for far too long…”
Having finished speaking, Alvin walked up to the immobilized Federer, covering his face with the side of the scroll that bore the text.
"If that hunter you brought with you is still in the city, I would take the opportunity to kill him, too, but he is not here, so there’s no need for me to waste my energy.”
"No one will know what happened here; they will only know that Massas City will henceforth be completely locked down, and you, unfortunately, died inside.”
