Chapter 287: Centers
“What?”
For all intents and purposes, the fourth pulse thought for sure that she had heard right. She had gotten her reports from the Arbiter himself.
Unfortunately, he had been stationed at the wall during the ambush. All she had been able to get was that Nyx had somehow escaped the veil. He couldn’t even confirm if Malakai was alive or dead before he retreated.
With Nyx free, the ambush could no longer continue. As an Adrenari, he knew better than to face an elite of Sanguine.
But upon returning, they had determined for sure that Malakai was still alive. His lifeguard was still active in the city’s central control room, but they had no idea where he was until he entered the city.
It was only now that the fourth pulse was receiving the report on everything that had occurred during the ambush.
“Did I not speak English, Mother? I—”
“Stop the nonsense, Seraza!” Beatrix bellowed, the force causing the room to quake. The words froze in Seraza’s mouth, and she had to clench her fists to stop the trembling in her hands.
“Speak.”
Seraza glared at her mother but obeyed.
“I watched the whole thing…” As she narrated Malakai’s fight with the synergy stage evolver, the temperature in the room only kept dropping. Seraza shivered as she finished.
The sheer coldness radiating from her mother’s eyes at that moment could not be described. Seraza could count the number of times her mother had worn that look, and she loved every single one.
Seraza grinned. She loved it when her mother was angry. It was one of the reasons why she was always such a pain in the ass.
Seraza had no idea what was going through her mother’s head, but didn’t bother asking. All in all, she knew it was going to be fun.
’I’m glad he survived.’ She almost chuckled, but held herself. Her mother wouldn’t hesitate to hit her in this state.
Regardless, with Malakai alive, she now had the chance to get a rematch in the future. Hopefully soon. A thought struck Seraza.
“I heard they brought in one of his teammates.” Aside from her, only one other group made it back, and they had returned with a prisoner.
Beatrix snapped out of her thoughts and turned her gaze toward her daughter. The coldness was still very much present, but Seraza didn’t miss the calculatory glint in her eyes. She was planning.
“Yes. They brought back his companion.”
“Companion?”
“A Sanguine. It was reported that he’s close with the ninth vein. They were seen moving around together at the training camp. And he also brought him to Sylvastein.”
Seraza’s eyes lit up. “Then we can use him! W—”
“I already have a use for him,” Beatrix cut her off before she could finish.
Seraza frowned. “What’s more important than killing that bastard?”
The fourth pulse stared at her daughter silently for a few moments. She seemed to contemplate whether to speak or not.
“I guess it’s best to inform you now. It’s our legacy, after all,” she finally said, suddenly standing up.
“Let’s go.”
Seraza narrowed her gaze. She could feel the seriousness in her mother’s demeanor. Whatever could make a pulse become like this was sure to be important.
She trailed behind Beatrix as she made her way out of the office. The walk through the hallway of the fourth pulse’s mansion was quiet, and Seraza could see they were heading toward her bedchambers.
It was only after they entered a secret passage inside the room that Seraza became cautious.
They walked into a small compartment that she was able to identify as an elevator with a few glances.
’We’re going down,’ Seraza realized. She glanced at her mother. Since they started moving, she had worn a steel mask that never changed.
’How far down are we going?’ Seraza wondered. It had been more than a minute now, and they were still descending.
She glanced at her mother one more time. Her expression still hadn’t changed. Soon enough, the elevator stopped and the door slid open to a pristine white hallway.
Seraza followed closely behind her mother as they made their way through it. This was unfamiliar territory. And though she was a battle maniac, she was smart enough to know when to be all brawns and when to be wary.
’This place is large.’ The hallway seemed endless. And Seraza didn’t miss the fact that there was no other soul in sight.
She couldn’t help but imagine how big this space was. ’It’s under the city,’ she determined.
Soon enough, their steps carried them to a large door. With a brief, strict scan of both Beatrix and Seraza, the door slid open.
The instant they stepped in, Seraza’s eyes widened at the sight she saw. Sprawled before her was an endless, brightly lit, pristine white hall.
Numerous figures in white lab coats roamed around, some in groups, others alone. Regardless, their eyes were always fixed on the… test subjects.
There were people strapped to tables, some screaming, others wailing, but the researchers didn’t seem to care.
Some were being skinned, others had limbs cut off. A few had metal contraptions drilled into their skulls, twitching violently. Blood soaked the floors around the tables.
The piercing screams of the people slammed onto Seraza like a wave. She was completely taken aback, only able to stare silently.
“What the hell, Mom…” Seraza blurted. It was the only thing that came to her mind.
Beatrix began to walk away, descending the flight of stairs calmly. Seraza eventually tore her gaze away and followed.
“This is only one of many centers.”
She said it without a single trace of remorse or pity in her voice or eyes. They were stone cold.
“Center? More like torture chambers,” Seraza said, regaining a piece of her composure.
They had begun walking through the hall now. The people in lab coats stopped to bow as they passed.
The screams of the test subjects grew even worse the deeper they went, but Seraza’s expression didn’t change.
