Chapter 246: Tap

“Grath’Mekhai! I propose we kill them to send a message. This could all be a plot by those savages,”

Urz’Vekk, head of the Vorr’Taal, the elite warriors in charge of the coven’s main fighting force, said as he rose to his feet.

He was a large man. Broad. But his most distinct traits were the black horns that jutted out of his skull and the wings folded across his back.

His eyes were red slits, and they were fixed firmly on the coven head.

This was the space Malakai had just left with Grunde.

The other Gor’Mekhai had already cleared out, leaving only the coven’s elders behind to discuss. And if it wasn’t already obvious, the air was tense.

“I agree with Urz’Vekk,” Skor’Fenn added. He was the head of the Fleshgnarls, the warriors who maintained order within the coven.

He was bulkier, even more so than Urz’Vekk. His hands were huge, his entire body covered in fur like a bear. His yellow eyes were fierce, and his voice sounded like a low growl.

“They’re becoming more and more brazen every day. Grath’Mekhai, just give the word, and I shall follow,” Urz’Mekhai added.

The other elders seated on different thrones nodded in agreement. Most of them hated the fact that they were entertaining those outsiders at all.

That they would even consider giving one of them a chance to join the coven sounded insane to them.

A soft tap on the armrest of her throne silenced the room. Grath’Mekhai’s expression didn’t shift, despite the elders’ clear dissatisfaction.

“We will not be doing that.”

“Grath’Mekhai—”

“You do not interrupt me.” Her voice cut through the room before Urz’Vekk could finish.

Suddenly, the air in the hall grew heavy. Breathing became difficult.

“I am the Grath’Mekhai,” she began. “My actions are taken with the sole intention of serving this coven. To make it better. To make it thrive. If I listened to every word you war hungry fools spit out, we would’ve destroyed ourselves a long time ago. You keep asking the wrong questions. Challenging the wrong orders. Have the beasts you grafted with taken over your minds? Or have my elders always been this stupid?”

A red flush spread across the faces of many of the elders, especially the ones who had spoken earlier.

Regardless of whether they were speaking in the outsiders’ language or their own, the Grath’Mekhai’s tongue had always been sharp.

“We offer our apologies, Grath’Mekhai, for our ignorance,” one of the elders finally said.

She turned her gaze toward the speaker. He was leaner than most, his white skin covered in countless black spots. His arms and legs were hunched, clearly far from human.

Grath’Mekhai held back a smile. At the very least, her son’s presence reminded her she wasn’t alone.

Rundash smiled at his mother and bowed. “I’m afraid we’re not capable enough to comprehend the reason for your actions, Grath’Mekhai. While I do not dare question it, it is our hope that you help us see your reasoning.”

The heaviness in the air lifted slightly, and the elders visibly relaxed.

Grath’Mekhai tapped a finger against the armrest of her throne once more.

“If you all haven’t figured it out already, then I’ll spell it out for you,” she said. “The people you call savages… they outnumber our coven. They outclass us. If we don’t evolve, we will be erased.”

“But we can’t abandon our ways because of them, Grath’Mekhai!” Urz’Vekk blurted out before he could think.

“What about the other covens? If we inform them, they’ll storm this place—”

A sharp glare from Grath’Mekhai cut him off. The message was clear: interrupt her again, and it wouldn’t end with a glare.

“We will not risk war with them,” she said coldly. “War will bring death… and breed the darkness. It must be avoided at all costs.”

A glance around the room made it clear, the elders were far from satisfied.

“People from the coven keep going missing, Grath’Mekhai, our people!” Urz’Vekk added after she finished.

“From the continuous reports from the Stalkborn, it’s clear they’re trying to find our coven,” he said. “Grath’Mekhai, if we stay docile, we’ll be wiped out.”

“No.” Grath’Mekhai slowly shook her head. “We might’ve just spoken to the solution to our current crisis.”

The elders looked confused.

“That child?” Skor’Fenn growled. “He’s barely a veinblinding. What could he possibly do?”

“It is who he is, not what he can do,” Grath’Mekhai replied cryptically.

Just as the elders began murmuring and exchanging puzzled glances, the coven head continued.

“He’s a descendant of the ruling clan of this region.”

The expressions of the elders changed instantly.

The hours passed quickly, and the sun began to rise.

Malakai opened his eyes and exhaled heavily. A small smile tugged at his lips. The night had been short, but the rewards had been incredible.

Just standing here had allowed him to absorb more than he usually had to work for back at the base. He found himself quietly wishing he lived here.

’It’s almost time.’

Malakai stood and stretched, loosening his stiff muscles. The sky was shifting with the light of morning. The Drah’Morr would begin soon. He decided to check in on the couple first.

When he reached the small tree, he wasn’t surprised to find Grunde already awake, but the scene he saw did catch him off guard.

“Grunde wishes he could lay here with you forever. Does Luna have to leave?” Grunde asked softly.

Luna giggled, brushing her fingers along his chin before placing a kiss on his cheek. “I’m sorry, Grunde, but the Drah’Morr will start soon. I need to be with my mother when it does.”

“So Luna can’t be with Grunde…”

“I’m sorry…” They shared a deep kiss, and Malakai fought the rising urge to puke as he approached.

It was at that moment, when his footsteps became apparent, that they quickly separated.

“Oh, you’re here,” Luna said, a little flustered.

But Grunde’s energy was completely different.

“Little brooooooo!” he screamed, launching toward Malakai in a bone crushing bear hug.

Malakai’s face darkened immediately.

’Not again,’ he thought in dread.
